Royal Wedding Singers Performing Here

November 17, 2011

Acts associated with President Barack Obama’s historic inauguration, the Royal wedding, and even “Forrest Gump” are among the performances in the 2012 line-up of the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts.

Ticket sales for the 37th festival will begin at 10 am on Monday, November 21. The Festival runs from January 17, 2012 – February 26, 2012.

The opening act is male quartet, Blake, whose hit single “All of Me”, recorded to celebrate the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton, topped the music charts globally in April.

Classically trained, the boy-band will be performing a varied repertoire.

Venezuelan, pianist Gabriela Montero who performed with cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, violinist, Itzhak Perlman and clarinetist Anthony McGill at US President Barack Obama’s historic inauguration in 2009, will give a lively Sunday afternoon concert at City Hall.

Ms Montero, renown for her dexterity and improvisation, will be asking the audience for musical selections on which she will improvise.

Soulful songstress Marlena Smalls will weave storytelling with her Hallelujah Singers in a performance celebrating the rich culture of the Gullah people of South Carolina. The Gullah live in the Sea Island, an area made famous with the character Bubba, in the film “Forrest Gump.”

Festival Chairman Ian Davidson said the 2012 programme is outstanding for local art lovers.

“Our 2012 programme is diverse, featuring amazing jazz in the trumpeting stylings of Jon Faddis and his Jazz Orchestra of New York, to the compelling acting of Thembi Mtshali-Jones in ‘Mother to Mother’, to the all French Valentine programme of soprano Carole Farley. There’s even family fun in ‘ZOOZOO’ with animals.”

Festival director Karen Pollard said: “ We have two chamber groups in the lineup, The Schubert Ensemble of London and The Toulouse Chamber Orchestra conducted by the illustrious José Serebrier who will also give a pre-performance talk on The Role of the Conductor. And of course we’re delighted to host Ailey II, the junior company of the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.”
