Bail Denied: 18-Yr-Old Gun Suspect

December 19, 2011

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Dec.19] was 18-year-old Derrion Simons who was charged with being in possession of a gun and ammunition.

Mr Simons is alleged to have been in possession of Smith & Wesson revolver and ammunition in the area by the old Clayhouse Inn on North Shore Road in Devonshire on November 5th, 2011.

As the matter is indictable and can only be heard in the Supreme Court, Mr Simons did not have to enter a plea.

Mr Simons, wearing an orange prison suit, appeared with his defence lawyer Marc Daniels who made a lengthy submission that sought to have his client released on bail.

After hearing from the DPP’s Prosecutor and from Mr Daniels, Senior Magistrate Archie Warner rejected the request that Mr Simons should be freed on bail.

The Magistrate ordered that Mr Simons should be remanded in custody until he re-appears for a Short Form Preliminary Inquiry at 2:30pm on Monday 9th January 2012.

You all sound VERY SILLY. Typical judgemental Bermudians. He has a family just like you do, who love him very much. He’s only 18 and who’s to say he wont get out and change his life? Chances are all of you on here know some one who is making or has made the same dumb choice he did! Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house! And don’t wish years lost on his life that you wouldn’t want to see given to your son, daughter, brother or sister. He was wrong for having the gun but at the end of the day it is he who will have to live with his choice for the rest of his life.
