Attempted Murder: Noet Barnett Found Guilty

December 14, 2011

[Updated] The jury in the attempted murder trial of Noet Barnett came back with a verdict this evening [Dec.14], finding Mr Barnett guilty of attempted murder.

Mr Barnett, 25, was accused of shooting Jeremiah “Rocks” Dill on October 4, 2010 on Parsons Road by the One Stop Variety Store.

The two men were friendly before the shooting; Mr Barnett is the godfather of Mr Dill’s daughter, and was also dating his sister.

During the trial the Court heard that Mr Barnett was affiliated with 42, while the shooting victim was said to be affiliated with Parkside. The jury was also shown a video of Mr Barnett and a group of men handling a gun and making threats against the Parkside gang.

The Court also heard that the gun used to shoot Mr Dill had been used in other shootings, including the murder of Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins in 2010.

Update 7.46pm: Speaking after the verdict, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said, “Obviously we are pleased to receive the verdict in the matter of Mr Noet Barnett, who has been found guilty of attempted murder using a firearm, and also handling the firearm.

“This marks the 13th person convicted for a serious crime in Bermuda since the beginning of the year, and the 12th trial which has resulted in a conviction for serious crimes. Obviously it’s very pleasing to end the year on such a high note ”

“Obviously a very challenging investigation from the outset, which I think that was seen by the evidence. The investigators from the Serious Crime Unit did an excellent job in bringing that all together. This was further enhanced by the good work of the prosecutors in the office of the DPP.”

  1. Same S*** Different Day says:

Oh he did not look so tough when the police was marching him across the street
where is his BOY’s now. He will be just in time to get his turkey cooked for Christmas!!!!1

    • MinorMatters says:

Not surprising he didn’t look so tough – if the accounts are correct, that he has the mental age of a 10 year old!

  2. speak real says:

Good job police! It is chilly out I’m sure he would be keeping someone very warm In JAIL!

  3. R you serious!!! says:

Interesting how many of them don’t like the WEST……..now they will reside there for a very long time!

  4. vent says:

They say Mr. Barnett was seen in a video with a group of men. It sounds like to me there is at least another 25- 30 people in the streets of Bda that need to be arrested ASAP!
They say it has been 13 people convicted this year, then its 13 down and about forty to go! Literally.
I have heard of people in bermuda reporting to crime stoppers but there requests have been ignored literally years later they see the same person still walking who is extremely dangerous. So like a lot of PPl in Bda say everyone knows who these guys are they just need to be picked up and crime stoppers need to act instead of ignoring ppl.
IT Really really really really really is some crazy people living in households terrifying their families , what a shame the police dont pick them up sooner.

    • Common Sense says:

@Vent says – Sadly, the system doesn’t operate like that and for good reason. Someone can call Crimestoppers with information and names, but the Police cannot arrest anyone without evidence – and an anonymous call naming someone is not by itself sufficient evidence. What Crimestoppers need are calls that provide not just names but some assistance in helping to find evidence. Providing names is a good start – but the Police need more than just a name to build a case. And if you’re thinking that the Police should simply go and arrest the person and extract a confession then think again! Gang members are very unlikely to confess, and they are very quick to call their lawyers, and to hire the best QC’s to defend them if taken to court.

In this particular case – job well done by the Police.

    • MinorMatters says:

I’d start with the Boulevard Blazer Team who can’t go to Somerset to play a “Friendship” Tropy Game…what does that tell you? It says that there are people in our midst with known/suspected gang affiliation and they are accepted in our community with impunity. Now, I ask how can this Island go forward in stamping out this scourge?

  5. fyi says:

Hey bernews, his name is actually NOEL not NOET.

Good going police & DPP & the public who assisted in this case!!!!

    • Bernews says:

Actually, his legal name is Noet with a T, that has been established in Court. He may call himself “Noel”, but it is not his legal name

    • MinorMatters says:

Wrong! His Birth Certificate is NOET although he is known as NOEL. Read…

    • FYI (original)- Um just saying says:

@fyi (non-original)- Did you ever consider that due to his inablity to read, write or spell he is unable to distinguish the letter T from L or vice versa, especially since he also suffers from a speech impedement.

Let’s not shoot from the hip.

And fyi- please use another pseudo name…

  6. Shark Hash says:

    Good job BPS and DPP.

  7. Tuba says:

Big Dog Pedro was on the case…

  8. unbelieveable BS says:

Although 2 wrongs don’t make a right the so called victem deserved every shot he got and Noel deserves time for not shooting Jeremiah “Rock” right between the eyes! I say this bcos I personally know the so called victim openly braggs to females and any street person that he [edited for legal reasons] and he laughs… I’m sick n tired of seeing these evil b%#tards get justice while a man like perry who was trying his best to stay out of de BS loses his life and now his kids have to be raised without there father and they get no justice… Things like this jus make folk feel like the police protect parkside and don’t put the same required energy in solving murders or shootings that they do… Um jus calling a spade a spade n this is street talk 101 and I can guarantee u that Rock is no safer with Noel behind bars bcos some folk jus not gonna let go…

    • SMH says:

Seems like you know a lot about what is going on…Instead of venting on here go to the Police with credible information. Even if what you are referencing above is true it is still heresay. Be mindful that the police work every angle and if they do not have enough evidence to prove what I believe you are eluding to above they will not bring him before the courts.

Even if Jeremiah has committed a serious offense and has yet to be convicted he will have his day one day, whether it be before the courts or some other type of justice…….

      • Really?? says:

Just because you know what’s going on does not mean you can prove it in court. At the end of the day it’s just hearsay. You can tell the police but what can they do? Build a case off your word. No, they can’t. I can tell you that most people who have their ear to the street knows who do alot of shootings. Most kids in the steet can tell you who shot who and who did what and I can bet the police hear the same things too. But without physical evidence or a reliable eye witness there is not much else you can do but vent.

  9. Shame says:

I met this young man despite what he got caught up in,he is not a bad guy at all ,very friendly and well manered
And a good worker I wish I could have helped him stay out of the nonsense from my experience of him he was trapped into bad situations and bad company.

    • united says:

Not a bad guy?! He tried to KILL somebody! It’s that kind of thinking that, especially the educated lawyer type that thinks; “he can rehabilitated” that hand out these meaningless short prison stays that have the planet screwed up. Capital punishment, Erskine “Buck” Burrows and Larry Tacklyn type justice is what Bermuda needs again. I know, I sound heartless and all but think about it. These criminals don’t get a damn about killing or shooting somebody else, why should the rest of Bermudians care about what happens to these thugs. Think about all the people living in fear in Bermuda because of them. Just my humble opinions that’s all but I am sick and tired of this.

      • Can't Take It Anymore says:

Bad comparison, as the real culprite who murdered the police cheif left the island.

      • Actually... says:

Did he really try to kill someone? This verdict only means that the Jury BELIEVE he did, not that he ACTUALLY did. So when “Shame” says that “he is not a bad guy at all” perhaps he isn’t…

  10. ignorance says:

@Shame.. He is not a bad guy at all? Very friendly and well mannered? I wonder if you would have the same view if he tried to TAKE YOUR LIFE….?

Jeesh, I’d hate to see your ideal of a bad guy, god help us all.

  11. YA RIGHT BIG DOG PEDRO WAS ON THE CASE, WHAT TUBA!YOUR PARKSIDE TO,DON’T WORRY 42ND & SOMERSET,ONE DAY EVERYTHINGS GOING TO COME TO LIGHT,THE PUBLIC SEE,WHATS GOING ON

  12. it is what it is says:

With his IQ as low as stated throughout the case does he REALLY understand? @ Ignorance ANYBODY can be friendly and well mannered? I work with friendly and well mannered people (I’m sure we all do) but they would “stab you in the back” withot skipping a heartbeat…..A lot of serial killers are friendly, well mannered, quiet and unassuming so I see nothing wrong with ‘Shames” statement..that’s the side of Noet that HE knew……..

  13. Real says:

He has the I.Q of a 9yr old. Ask any 9yr old and they would tell you guns are illegal and it is illegal to shoot someone. FYI, tired of people thinking Pedro is de big shotta. He doesn’t do anything, its all the young black Bermudians in SCU that do all the work. Big up The Serious Crime Unit

    • SMH says:

Why you gonna bring the color of skin into consideration ya idiot. !! always raising the Race CARD.

      • Real says:

@ SMH, sorry about the race but there is a lot of talk about the English Detectives coming to Bermuda and assisting SCU with cases when they haven’t helped solve squat.

        • HMMM HMMMMM says:

english does not mean white..you narrow minded idiot.

          • Real says:

Okay let me spell it out for you j…a..! None of them that were brought in our black. signed…. deep in the know.

  14. Shame says:

All I am saying is its a crazy situation these young guys are in on the island when they end up trying to shoot each other but I understand it’s not as it seems they definitely are not hardened criminals .

  15. The Batman says:

I remember taking down this punk. When I first encountered him he was shouting something in patois, something about burning out all homosexuals? He then took off down an alley. I took off after him, while dodging several bottles of red stripe that he threw at me. He tried to hop over a fence, but I pulled him down using my bat-grapple. He then turned and shouted that I (batman) am a batty boy(?) and spit in my direction. Using my quick reflexes, I dodged the spit and hit him with several keysi blows to his head and broke his femur to ensure he stayed down.

    The Dark Knight Returns….

  16. navin johnson says:

wake up Batman you must be dreaming…..
