January 23, 2012

Bermuda won the 2011 Top Destination of the Year Award from Expedia Inc at at a marketing event held at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas on Saturday night [Jan.21]. Expedia is one of the world’s largest and foremost online travel sites.

On hand to accept the award on behalf of Bermuda was the Minister of Business Development and Tourism Wayne Furbert, who is currently in Bahamas participating in the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Council of Ministers meeting.

Prior to bestowing the award on Bermuda, Trish Korzeniowski, Market Manager of Expedia said, “Since we began to work with Bermuda in 2001, this destination has managed to have the motivation, commitment and partnership of those destinations ten times bigger.

“With coordinated seasonal offers, annual marketing presence in US, Canada and UK, a consistent branding look and feel, a try something new attitude and an amazingly focused team, Bermuda is the epitome of the Destination of the Year.”

Minister Furbert receiving the Award from Trish Korzeniowski, Market Manager of Expedia:

Coco Reef also won hotel partner of the year at last evening’s event.

Meanwhile, at the CTO Minister’s meeting, Minister Furbert will meet to discuss such issues as the airline passenger duty tax imposed by the UK government, as well as current challenges affecting the tourism industry.

Minister Furbert said of the CTO event, “It is key for Bermuda to participate in major industry events such as this. This is about building and strengthening relationships with our overseas partners, and I very much look forward to flying the Bermuda Tourism flag at the CTO conference.”

Minister Furbert will also attend the CHA Marketplace event where all major wholesalers and tour operators from the USA, Canada and Europe, doing business to Bermuda, will be in attendance.

Yesterday Bermuda hosted its own partner reception where General Managers and representatives from Bermuda’s hotels including, Fairmont Southampton, Hamilton Princess, Elbow Beach, Newstead, Cambridge Beaches, Rosewood Tucker’s Point, Grotto Bay Beach Hotel and Coco Reef hotel will also be in attendance.

  2. Justin says:

  6. the Doctor says:

Well done to all of those in the industry that are making that difference so this award can be won. Keep up the good work.

  7. Rockfish#2 says:

Congratulations Minister Furbert, you are doing a good job showing the UBP/PLP how to promote tourism.

  8. Necromonger says:

I guess all those critics who say Bermuda has lost her appeal and attractiveness to visitors must have overlooked this story..!!!!

Well Done Bermuda…and all who do positive things for this beautiful country.!!

    Nuff Said.

  9. Tommy Chong says:

Great job Minister Furbert! Keep the brainstorming up. Not all ideas will be good but all should be looked at.

Hopefully while he was there he took note of ALLL!!! the other attractions bringing tourist to Atlantis Hotel other than the casino.

    • Sandgrownan says:

      Ha..Furbert and brainstorming..surely you jest!

      • Tommy Chong says:

No jest, like I mentioned not all ideas will be good but I like some. i.e. Scantily clad students running around Bermuda’s beaches during spring break, “GOOD IDEA”. Targeting seniors that want to relive their scantily clad days in Bermuda, “BAD IDEA”. You cant bake a cake without breaking a few eggs. How many other past plp tourism ministers have come up with better?

        • Sandgrownan says:

Think old flip flop Furby is picking up the award on behalf of others?

Still, better than nothing, but I still don’t really understand what it’s for and how it translates into more visitors.

      • Words to remember says:

It’s so funny you and the UBP/OBA boys didn’t say that when you was using my cuz as a black man to win your election by attracting the black vote. I told my Cuz for many years when I passed him on the street, get out of the UBP/OBA.
Dam man is so nice he didn’t listen until it was too late, then you kick his a$$ to the curb like a stray dog. Thank god you did, because it just proved to we blacks in the PLP what we already knew, don’t trust the UBP/OBA.

Hey didn’t you kick Kim Swan to the curb also. Now your using another black man Craig Cannonier. He’ll be the next just wait and see, then again you already know that.

YES I SAID IT BECAUSE, WE ALL KNOW IT TO BE TRUE. RUN A WHITE MAN AS LEADER OF THE UBP/OBA SEE WHAT THE ELECTION RESULTS WILL BE!

As Jim Woolrridge said “those little white boys don’t mind you being in charge as long as they can tell you what to do – “The House That Jack Built” by the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge.

I didn’t make this story up, wasn’t Mr. Woolridge at the top of the food chain in the UBO/OBA or was he just part of the food? Talking about food didn’t you kick Sir John Swan out because of some Mcdonald’s restaurant he was trying to open up.

Even though my cuz Wayne was part of the UBP/OBA my family as PLP voters always treated him with respect even when he was helping you guys. Ask him and the rest of the blacks that were in the OBA/UBP how their being treated now by the whites they called friends? I wonder what they would say.

        • Sean says:

Mate, they ran a white guy as leader last time around and barely lost the popular vote.

        • Sandgrownan says:

          Racist.

        • White Bermudian male says:

I always treat Furbert nice and I’m a white Bermudian male. The man is a friendly fellow, so I’ll give you that……….. but he’s in the wrong party.

          • Family Man says:

They have a different party for multi-level marketing travel agents?
            Is that Andre’s new party?

        • Rockfish#2 says:

Your”Cuz” took your advice. He helped form the PLP/UBP, and is now reaping the rewards, plus teaching you tourism 101.
If you use your powers of persuasion to find a competent Finance Minister, you will have done Bermuda proud!

  10. star man says:

Even though Expedia obviously don’t know what they are talking about, this is good news. Yer bye, the ex-Leader of the UBP, sure is getting a lot of air time these days at Minister of Tourism for the UBP/PLP. Furbert is good at it, I must admit, a very personable guy who speaks to everyone, a la Sir John.

  11. 32n64w says:

    Great job Bermuda.

  12. Triangle Drifter says:

Which other destinations were in the running? Maybe more important, how much advertising do they spend on Expedia compared to Bermuda? Just wondering.

There is no denying that Bermuda standards are very low these days compared to what they used to be long long ago.

  13. navin johnson says:

and as someone pointed out on the RG site this award follows on the heels of Bermuda naming Expedia travel partner of the year in Dec….reciprocation?

  14. familiar says:

I believe that this is a marketing award, meaning that Bermuda is marketed well according to Expedia’s standards which has little to do with how great a destination we are or how successful said marketing happens to be.

  15. Southampton says:

How the hell did we get this.
No tourists, prices out of the universe and no night life,
unless you want to drink all night long at a bar or night club.
What is there for tourists to do here?
I have been all over the world. This island offers nothing.

  16. Pen name says:

Check Goldilocks having fun at the grip and grin! Top destination of the year? seriously? how come the numbers dont reflect that at all? #justaskin

  17. Cancer says:

How the helll we win that award when nobody don’t even come here?

Funny how the hardest working man who seems to know what hes doing for the PLP is the UBP leader!

  18. Triangle Drifter says:

Another sham award. Kinda appropriate when you look at it inna?

Oh well, a bit of bling to go on somebodys wall.
