Owain Gets Another 15 Minutes Of Fame
Bermuda dramatist Owain Johnston-Barnes is getting his 15 minutes of fame — for the third time.
The journalist and creative writer picked up his third Golden Inkwell Award on Saturday [Feb. 18] at the end of the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society’s annual “Famous For 15 Minutes” festival for aspiring playwrights.
Other finalists included Adam Gauntlett, Kevin Comeau, Mark Lavery, George Morton and Deborah Pharoah-Williams.
Every year the BMDS invites Bermuda residents to script short, original plays which are then staged at its Daylesford Theatre in Hamilton.
This year’s festival of homegrown drama got underway on February 9 with Mr. Johnston-Barnes’ winning entry, titled “A Thousand Words”, announced on the closing night, February 18.

Proceeds from the event go toward the BMDS Charitable Trust, a charity that aims to promote and develop local theatrical arts, in the form of scholarships or bursaries, or through drama, music and dance workshops.
This year’s overall judge was Tom Coash, an American playwright who lives in New Haven, Connecticut. Prior to New Haven, he spent three years in Bermuda, where he was one of the founders of the “Famous for 15 Minutes Festival” at BMDS in 2002.
Mr. Coash spent four years teaching playwriting at The American University in Cairo, Egypt and was a co-founder of the Offstage Theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia and has worked for such theatres as the Manhattan Theatre Club and Actors Theatre of Louisville.
