SKAL Travel/Tourism Congress Deemed A Success

April 17, 2012

The praises of Bermuda are being sung in various cities across Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States. Delegates and guests from those countries have now returned home following a congress in Bermuda. From all reports these visitors were so impressed with all that Bermuda has to offer that they look forward to return visits.

The participants represented the various clubs in the North American region of SKAL – the North American Association of SKAL Clubs [NAASC]. SKAL is a professional organization of travel and tourism leaders from around the world. It is the only organization that comprises people from all aspects of the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries. Each club is made up of industry managers and executives who meet to promote travel and friendship amongst its members.

Nearly 200 visitors were here for the congress and they were joined at various functions by a number of the local SKAL International Bermuda members and guests. The participants were treated to various aspects of Bermuda’s pomp and ceremony, including a fanfare by the Bermuda Regiment trumpeters, a performance by the Town Crier David Frith, a Gombey troupe, the vocal duo Prestige, and a piano/vocal appearance by Samone Tucker.

“This marks the first time Bermuda has hosted a NAASC Congress”, said SKAL International Bermuda President Leslie Veney, “and our congress committee had been working on the event for some three years”. She added that “their efforts proved to be successful, and the overseas participants were all impressed and would like to visit Bermuda again”.

At the official opening ceremony – attended by, amongst others, His Excellency the Governor Sir Richard Gozney, SKAL International President Enrique Quesada, and SKAL International Vice President Mok Singh – the flags of the NAASC countries were presented. Each flag was carried by a veteran hotel/travel/tourism person who “passed the flag” to a relative young person in those same fields.

Next year’s event will take place in Sacramento, California, and in 2014 the congress will be hosted by Halifax, Nova Scotia.
