60+ Confirmed Candidates For Upcoming Election
With an election date not yet set but expected to be announced in the coming months, the island’s political parties have confirmed over 60 candidates thus far.
The PLP has rolled out 32 of their 36 candidates, with the representatives for C#14 Devonshire North West, C#12 Devonshire South Central, C#4 St. George’s South and C#1 St. George’s North yet to be announced.
C#14 is presently held by Premier Paula Cox who is expected to contest the seat again, while C#1 is presently held by Dame Jennifer Smith who is also expected to fight to retain her seat. Unofficial reports indicate there may be some conflict in C#4, with Pastor Leroy Bean’s candidacy said to be in question after the controversy surrounding his consultancy contract with the Bermuda Land Development Corporation.
The OBA has rolled out 26 candidates thus far, with 10 remaining. The areas that the OBA candidates have not yet been announced are: C#34 Sandys South Central, C#32 Southampton West, C#29 Southampton East, C#20 Pembroke South West, C#18 Pembroke West Central, C#17 Pembroke Central, C#16 Pembroke East Central, C#14 Devonshire North West, C#8 Smith’s South and C#1 St. George’s North.
Former Deputy Mayor of Hamilton Glen Smith has not yet been formally announced, but has been seen canvassing for the OBA in C#14 Devonshire North West. The OBA’s Louise Jackson is set to retire leaving the C#20 Pembroke South West seat open, and unofficial reports indicate there internal discussions within the OBA over who will contest the seat, which is considered one of the safest for the Opposition, who won the district with over 80% of the vote in the last election.
The UBP has confirmed they will field two candidates, with both Charlie Swan and Kim Swan set to contest the seats they presently hold, making both C#2 St. George’s West and #C31 Southampton West Central three-way battles.
At least three Independents have indicated they will stand, with David Tavares running in C#8 Smith’s South, Khalid Wasi set to contest the C#21 Pembroke South East seat, and former UBP Minister Erwin Adderly set to run in C#19 Pembroke West, which will see him match up against his sister Jeanne Atherden who is standing for the OBA.
The last election was held on 18 December 2007, and saw the PLP win a third term in power with 22 seats, against 14 for the opposition UBP. The PLP earned 16,800 votes [52.5%], with the UBP gaining 15,161 votes [47.3%]. The 2003 election saw similar results, with the PLP earning 22 seats and 15,222 votes [51.6%] and the UBP winning 14 seats and 14,142 votes [48%].
The five closest seats in the 2007 election were won by margins ranging from 17 to 48 votes. The UBP won C#2 St. George’s West by 17 votes, the PLP won C#1 St. George’s North by 25 votes, the UBP won C#4 St. George’s South by 25 votes, the UBP won C#11 Devonshire East by 27 votes, and the PLP won C#30 Southampton East Central by 48 votes.

With all the constituency boundaries changed, the numbers are no longer relevant. Also, the 2012 election will be in the midst of unemployement. Comparing “things” to last year is almost futile because “things” this year are completely different. Bottom Line: No one knows. And this makes PLP very nervous. And OBA optimistic. Only time will tell.

Ms. Jackson is around her area introducing her daughter Susan as the person to inherit her seat? Alfonso declared himself as the candidate for #1 and an independent will be winning the seat from Cole Simon, just saying.

Oh no, of course not. Only OBA members can pass on seats or are part of a parachute team.
By the looks of these numbers, there aren’t as many “safe seats” as I first thought.
With only months to go before the election, the OBA have 8 constituencies to fill. I guess the OBA are not looking to win this one on the doorsteps.
Oppositions rarely win elections.
Governments lose them.
After all that we’ve seen happen in the last 13 years
this government rightly deserves to lose.
However the cynical among us know that when it comes to the ballot box
the PLP will be supported by the diehards and the care-less.
The world is on fire. Brave yet oppressed and poor people are fighting corrupt
Governments to achieve a life worth living.
We enjoy a safer and far richer life compared with them but make no mistake about it,
anybody who can honestly stand up and shout “I’ll have 5 more years of that” will most certainly be getting it.
The vote is by secret ballot, nobody can ever know how you voted but you.
Make the sensible choice lest you end up in your own “Arab Spring” 5 years from now.
For a real change…..The white voters that always vote UBP/OBA would change the direction of their votes to the PLP. Whites have voted “enblock” for the UBP/OBA for well over 36 years. There has never been a “shift” in their voting patterns. The ‘Black population’ have ‘shifted’ and voted in both directions. Movement therefore has to come from the white voters. So why ask Black population to make the change? Like it or not….Bermuda does vote along racial lines……however, blacks have been the ones to shift the voting…….whites have never shifted……… yes this is an important variable to the voting patterns in Bermuda. Blacks also vote based upon the “current issues” that they deem of great significant. This can not be for whites, as their voting pattern remains the same, regardless of the issues. So like it or not….past “election statistical data” provides clear evidence of these facts. So let debate the real facts…..and so the race card applies more to the “white populations, than it does the black population.

I’ll say it again, I think an election is just around the corner as well – I anticipate July when the college students have returned – another December election is too long to wait – wouldn’t want some people to change their mind would ‘ya?!…
