Video: Gerald Simons Reflects On His 40-Yr Career
After over 40 years with the company, Gerald Simons retired as President of Argus Group Holdings Limited earlier this week. He started working full time at Argus on June 8th, 1971, having worked with them as a summer student starting in 1967.
Argus supported his education at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada from which he graduated with a degree in economics in 1971. During his career at Argus he has worked in the marketing, pensions and the life and health insurance areas of the business. From 1998 until 2010 Mr. Simons was also the Chief Executive Officer of the company.
In addition to his responsibilities at Argus, Mr. Simons served as a UBP Cabinet Minister for 11 years, and as the President of a number of organisations including the Bermuda Employers’ Council, the national organization of employers in Bermuda; the Bermuda Insurance Institute; the Bermuda National Trust, Bermuda’s largest voluntary organization; the Bermuda Philharmonic Society and the Health Insurance Association of Bermuda. In 1996 Mr. Simons was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his service to the community.
Mr Simons said, “I have mixed feelings about retirement. On the one hand I am pleased with what I have been involved in the last 40 years, here at Argus in particular but also in the community. On the other hand, there is always a degree of uncertainty with changes, even positive changes such as retirement…wondering what the future will hold.
“That said, I am looking forward to the opportunity spend a little more time with my hobbies, gardening and singing for example. And also continue to work with charities that I have not had enough time to work with in the past. I am heavily involved with the Adult Education school for example. I will continue as well to serve on a number of boards, so I will be not totally removed from of hustle and bustle of business, but I will be able to select how I spend my time and operate on a more relaxed pace.”
I’m sure the shareholders of both Argus and BNTB wish him well. May his pension fund have done as well as they have under his watch.
Congratulations Mr.Simons ,and all the best on your retirement…
I’m sure Mr. Simons can verify that the poor financial performance of Argus and BTNB was the PLP governments fault……..well, that’s what Bob Richards implies everyday….you know, term limits, work permits etc. it will be ironic if Mr. Simons son, Andrew, repeats the same fallacy on the doorstep! Lol! Smh!
