Another Team Pull Out Of Island Games

July 6, 2012

Jersey’s volleyball team is the latest team to confirm they will not be taking part in the 2013 Island Games due to the high cost of traveling to Bermuda.

The volleyball team follows after Jersey’s basketball and football teams who have also withdrawn citing the high cost. The Jersey media reports that the athletics team “is also likely to be hit hard” and that a “drastic reduction in team size is expected.”

Jersey is not the only island withdrawing athletes due to the cost, with both the Isle of Man and Guernsey previously confirming that their football teams will not compete in the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda due to the high cost.

The costs of transporting teams from Europe to the Bermuda has been a concern to many teams since it was announced the Games would be held in Bermuda. The Games will be held at various locations islandwide in Bermuda from 13th July – 19th July 2013.

  1. Concerned says:

Dept of Tourism – work with the Jersey Reps and Airlines to get them here – this is how you drum up business….

  2. Tickled Pink ( & Blue) says:

    No shocker there then.

Bermudians, residents & tourists have been continuosly “raped” financially by the British Airways monopoly for decades.

    Stay tuned for more omissions………….

    • Enforcer says:

Agreed. Some sort of deal should have been work out with BA. What about concessions for the teams flying via them. They give concessions to west jet, air tran et al. BA will continue to rape us.

  3. mixitup says:

It wasn’t exactly cheap to get our teams over there either. Oh well.

  4. Tolerate says:

@mixitup, my thoughts exactly, I’m not down playing a countries financial standing; but being from Bermuda and seeing the struggles we have with our own economy? Really? “Cost to travel to Bermuda was always going to be an issue”?
It is not like we so rich we can pick up the slack for these countries. I hope this does not reflect badly on Bermuda because a “COUNTRY” finds it too expensive to get here?

  5. Catherine DL says:

It may not be cheap for us – but our average wage does reflect the increased cost of living here and thus it is relatively cheaper. Couldn’t we charter a plane and put all the teams on it as a “cover costs only” deal? It is a real shame if we don’t see the teams here as a result of the expense of getting here.
