Kim Swan Calls For Update On Club Med Property

July 19, 2012

UBP MP Kim Swan — the St. George’s West MP – is calling on the Government to reveal what their plan is for the former Club Med property in St George’s.

“It has been 47 months since the implosion of the former Club Med Property and there are no signs of construction as promised,” said Mr Swan.

“The lease agreement between Mr. Bazarian’s company and the Bermuda Government specified a 48 month period for completion of construction and that deadline was obviously an impossible target more than 2 years ago.

“We (UBP) call on the PLP government to reconsider the original lease of public lands which includes an already constructed golf course which sits on 80 acres within the Town of St. George’s, and share with people of Bermuda via Parliament their intent on the lease of the property which is in now in breach.”

The latest plan for the property — which closed in 1988 — was to construct a Park Hyatt Hotel. At a Town Hall meeting in October 2010, Mr Bazarian said that construction would begin in November 2011.

This plan is the latest of a string for the property which has not been used as a tourist resort for almost 25 years. Prior to closing in 1988, the property was a Holiday Inn, then changed into Lowes, and then taken over by Club Med.

  1. Zombie Apocalypse says:

This is a good question. Ewart Brown also stated in November 2010 that financing was in place, and work would begin by November 2011. Dr Brown had previously also promised the Park Hyatt would be built, during the run-up to the 2007 election.

Thus all the election promises we’re getting now about new hotels have no credibility at all.

As for the Park Hyatt, hopefully Bazarian has no ongoing rights to use or lease the property. At the very least, if he isn’t going to do anything we should have the right to dump him and look around for another hotel developer with more serious intent.

    • pepper says:

Bazarian, is waiting for the outcome of the election… he is no fool .

      • Mad Dawg says:

Bazarian is a time waster. He will never build a hotel here. He was an ornament fir Ewart.

      • Logic76 says:

Bazarian isn’t an idiot. With a cost of $1 million per hotel room to build it will be a long time before any project starts in Bermuda.

      • street wise says:

No new hotels will be built in Bermuda while the PLP are in power. It’s that simple.

It was unconscionable for Ewart to close down the St G. Golf Course, there was no good reason to do that… and his continuous lies about building this and that have given the PLP Government a poor international reputation. One cannot trust them. Once the trust is gone, that’s it.

  2. Concerned says:

Absolutely nothing Kim – EB wanted to bring St. George’s to their knees – you all allowed it to happen and now ask “What is happening”. The man continues to be at the helm. Many don’t like what he did then, what is taking place now and the only way to STOP him and his IMPS is to VOTE THEM OUT!!!

  3. Reverend Pastor says:

There is no update on this. You know it, I know and the PLP knows it. The old hotel, was destroyed to feed the huge ego of the guy who pushed the button and to signify the destruction of Bermuda by him for his personal satisfaction. He had a ‘score to settle’ if you recall.

PLP may come up with some half baked and unbelievable plan which will supposedly be implemented immediately after we have voted them back into power for another five years thus ensuring Bermuda’s final demise and official entry into the third world. And if you are among the people who still believe their BS, then I have a bridge to sell you.

  4. Terry says:

    Lowes?
Sounds like a job for Home Depot Man………………………………

  5. lets get serious! says:

This was a out and out disgrace the people of Bermuda especially those in st georges should be outraged that this was allowed to happen , and since when do we see ministers line up for a show to watch a demolition ,its not like it was the berlin wall jeez ,the golf course destroyed what a mess to the business community in that area

    • Hmmmmm says:

So it would’ve been better to leave that decaying pink monstrosity there rather than demolish it so that it might be ready for construction? What a sad indictment of our people if that is the preference.

      • Claudio says:

Agreed, now since they are in breach of their lease shall we get our land back?

      • lets get serious! says:

it all made perfect sense if the contruction was to go ahead but NOTHING NOTHING happened as usual like all the other PLP pre election hotel promises beyond a joke now at this stage!

      • Finally left! says:

Its not JUST that the building was demo’d… if it was “we’re gonna get rid of this decaying pink monstrosity thats an eyesore”, then fine… go do it..

but businesses in the area were closed, they were told that land would be given to the developers….

plus, as noted, we were promised this grand hotel, and coincidentally right before an election..

basically people were tricked and fooled and severely put out of place over this…. again, if it was just removing an old building, you wouldnt have had all this follow up goin on.

  6. Swing Voter says:

Are the swing voters ready to dump their current MP? Be brave and dump her, send a message that you are tired of being taken for granted. Vote OBA

    • Seriously though says:

      why VOTE OBA?

where is there plans on everything, just bushing PLP, be real, atleast EB had an idea

      • Seriously though says:

        the plans OBA!!

        • street wise says:

Call the election and you’ll have your plans.

        • Mad Dawg says:

How about a plan to tell the truth to the electorate rather than lies and empty ‘promises’ designed to garner votes from gullible sheep?

How about a plan to spend money wisely (now that we don’t have any) rather than use taxpayers money to enrich elite PLP insiders?

      • More with less says:

Hitler had an idea, Mugabe had an idea, Stalin had ideas. Not comparing EB to these guys so dont get your panties in a wad, just saying that many leaders had ideas…

  7. Golf says:

They also destroyed a perfectly good and reasonably priced golf club and restaurant which put Bermudians out of work and deprived tourists and locals in the east end

    • Swing Voter says:

I think the whole golf club/course issue was personal….why would a Primier that loves golfing allow that to happen. Along with the cruise ship issue, the lack of attention given to the old town and surrounding areas, I think that the MPs who represent that region were blacklisted on both sides. KENNY SAVE US

      • pepper says:

Kenny Bascome,in my opinion is the most honest and liked person in Bermuda…he tells it like it is… and we need more people like kenny.

  8. Ok,Mr Swan. I have been talking about this for some time…how did we allow 1/3 of the parish be given away..Just Give us our land back..Also Mr Swan i know you a have a passion for golf,so maybe we can get at least a 9 hole course for the public. So continue to speak out on this issue..sorry Mr Swan but i would like to get the land next to St Catherines beach for picnic area for the residents of St,George and our visitors…When you really think aboutit, all the intrest has been in the west..i.e Dockyard..time for us in the east to make a stand and reclaim our parish….all is not lost and we have so much to hold on to…thanks for speaking out on this Mr Swan

  9. LaVerne Furbert says:

You people who post could probably make some money writing fiction or some reality show. Do you ever think before you put your fingers to the keys?

“EB wanted wanted to bring St. George’s to their knees”; “The man continues to be at the helm”; “the old hotel, was destroyed to feed the huge ego of the guy who pushed the button and to signify the destruction of Bermuda”; “I think the whole golf club/course issue was personal”.

I guess Mr. Bazarian was lying like John Wyte was lying.

Kim Swan’s trying to get some votes down in St. George’s and this is the best that he can come up with?

    • Shaking the Head says:

Kim Swan’s best (in your vernacular) is 100% better than either yours or Dame Jennifer Smith’s. Do you even know that the St George’s Club had use of the golf course before it was taken away? Do you have any idea what the benefit to St George’s is, to have the golf course available for the visitors to the Club, let alone locals? Clearly you don’t and instead of using your influence to the betterment of Bermuda you want to play politrics and belittle Kim Swan’s efforts to get live and money into St George’s.
      Call the election now.

      • WOW says:

Kim Swan did nothing for St Geo when he had power in the UBP. What the hell do you think he can do now with a washed up party with 2 MP. Keep it real.
        The white party is finished!

        • lol!! says:

And what is Nandi Davis goin to do?! She is the biggest joke of OBA! #foh with OBA and Nandi Davis… I feel like I am forced to vote Kim Swan, better Candidiates for a Better Bermuda #jussayin

    • Mad Dawg says:

Was it fiction or fact that Ewart Brown said financing was in place and building would start by November 2011?

I’ll make it easy for you. It was fact. A lie.

      • pepper says:

Doctor Brown, will go down in the history of Bemuda as the worst premier.. and Paula will be the second worst Premier……these two have $%^&*( this Island up..

    • pepper says:

Lavern, the talk show hosts have enough of you…..when you call in to these shows we turn it off. the only host that will entertain your retoric is Everest….. and I guess he is a bit afraid of your power….I will not bother to tune into these shows ever again….and you lot out there do not bother to listen to these talk shows…..play some music when you have your radio on enough is enough of the BS…

      • Sandgrownan says:

She has no power. She is a bitter washed up has been. Move on, ignore her.

    • Unbelievable says:

Laverne Furbert ya an a$$! Kim Swan will be the MP in the house representing St Georges South so get over it.
Jennifer Smith does absolutely nothing for St Georges. How can she in good concience and as a born St Georgian not fight for the Town that started Bermuda? She is an absolute disgrace to all St Georges people. I really wish that Kenny would run againts her in the election. As previously stated he has a deep rooted passion for St Georges with the best interest for all in the East End at heart. EB and the PLP have DESTROYED St Georges. POINT BLANK PERIOD!
There has been nothing done in the East to promote tourism or build up any business by the PLP or Jennifer. Kenny, Kim and the St Georges people are the ones fighting for survival!
So get a grip and shut the hell up!!! And YES THEY ALL OUTRIGHT LIED TO EACH AND EVERY BERMUDIAN – ESPECIALLY ST GEORGES!!!
They gave a false hope to the people because that is all they are good for! You know it, we all know it.

    • Concerned says:

LaVerne – you missed the last boat out of St. Geoerge’s harbor. Kim Swan doesn’t have to wait for an election to speak about his beloved home Community, he has been doing it for years while you do what, sip coffee at the bottom of Crawl hill.

No matter who has/would have spoken up then and even now, the EB/PLP is going to do what they want to do and the only way to stop them – VOTE THEM TO HELL OUT!!

By the way, where are the MP’s of the PLP who have been so quiet it seems as if they have their jaws wired. Unlike you, they remain quiet about everything that is going on and it is deafening. Silence is golden as the oletimers used to say but in this day and time – if you aren’t happy with what your party is doing, say so and so what if they don’t like it – let your Constituency know instead of putting up with lies, conspiracy, lies and you know the rest.

you know exactly what EB said back in the day, you read it, he said it, you heard it and you agree with it because you are still supporting the Vision. Get out whle you can still hold your head up

  10. sunman says:

why not make it onto a beautiful park? tourist will come to see the sights and more people would visit St George

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

Why are we looking abroad for someone else to foot the bill…BUILD A F#@KING HOTEL OURSELVES…what da f#@k is wrong with people…we dont have to build a billion dollar hotel ….it dont have to be ultra modern either….start small and develop a clientel make some profit then expand slowly…yes of course within the walls of the establishment it should be very warm, welcoming cozy and clean (immaculate from top to bottom)….Tourist want Nativity of the Island….Simplicity,(different from their hustle n bustle) Beauty,(clean fresh atlantic air, green follage and of course beaches)Relaxation (just a slower pace of life ) Carefree for even a day…huh? Utmost requirement would be FRIENDLINESS,wanting to make someones day …it will pay off trust me .
Now we all know Bda has some very influential figures that live here so of course with thier love for Bda im sure that we could get something kicking off …Every Destination or Island has its OWN PERSONAL THEME….people travel there for its theme…ummmm wats bermys theme anyway …? Come and Be Bored All You Can Be..?shhhhhhhhheeeeet! you people make me tired.
Bermuda is a jail and westgate is jus the isolation section.

  11. we keep asking gov. we should also ask mr. michael jones he was one of the main
speakers and working closely with the oweners and dr. brown

    michael please speak up..

    • pepper says:

Michael, will not speak out !!!! he will come up with excuses….he did work with the former premier……I wonder what benit he gained by suporting Brown ?

    • supporter says:

Michael did make one of the best mayors we have had to date… Bascome goes where he can be used be

      • Unbelievable says:

You are definately crackin jokes right??? Either that or you made a mistake n put the names in the wrong places. Cause everybody in de East knows that Kenny speaks his mind irregardless of what position he holds where!!! Now Michael on the other hand has always been the “yes” man…..

        NEXT!!!!

  12. K. Shakir says:

The reality of this is that there is no financing in place and St George’s is unlikely to see the development of a hotel at the old Club Med site before the next 5 – 10 years!

    Go Figure!

  13. Triangle Drifter says:

Nothing is going to happen. The project is dead. Who would invest big bucks in Bermuda with the PLP & their record since 1998? This is just one more of the long long list of projects that the PLP said that they are gonna do but have not happened.

That is the PLP Government, the GONNA Government. Gonna do this, gonna do that. All we get is talk. Talk talk talk.

When are the voters gonna vote them out?

    • Formidable Deviant says:

Ain’t that the truth, who you going to vote for? Craig, good guy, has an aura, assured without being arrogant, or Paula.

  14. Opressed says:

Why not put up a load of slums and a horrific looking gas station like they did on ocean front property in Warwick??

The PLP, planning department, and Rubis owe the people of Bermuda a huge apology.

    • street wise says:

      AMEN to that!!!!

    • Mad Dawg says:

They won’t build any new slums here, because the current owners of the land aren’t PLP private individuals who would profit personally. Unlike the situation when the new slums on South Shore were built.

If a bunch of PLP high- ups could buy that land, they would. And then the PLP government would buy it and build slums, which would remain empty.

  15. Emichael says:

Mr Bazarian continues to believe and support our Town. When the Community requested support for the Golf Course, Mr Bazarian made it available through the Eastern Division of the Chamber of Commerce. It was operated by Mr John Kyle of the St. George’s Club. The rent, $1 per year. Unfortunately, the operation was unsuccessful and the course was returned to us two weeks ago and we are now in the process of restoring the fairways and rough.
Mr Bazarian is in the final stages of the project design and it is expected that final planning approvals will be sought in the near future.

I take this opportunity to remind readers that there was no SDO, the regular planning process was chosen and took much longer to achieve approval in principle. Mr Bazarian looks forward to your continued support as the Park Hyatt becomes a reality and provides a first class Tourism product for the East End.
I might add, the world economy has not helped the project but Mr Bazarian has not waivered in his belief of Bermuda and St. George’s in particular.
I hope you will join the Mayor at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

    Emichael

    • xfiles says:

      Cogwash !

    • Concerned says:

Nope – Michael – absolutely not. Where is the proof that the golf couse was returned how long ago after how many years and will the course belong to the hotel or government? Kenny, did you know this or are you finding out like the rest of us and don’t cut nobody’s ribbon – continue to be outspoken and keep it as business not as usual – people do not like people who take no nonsense, speaks from the heart, encourages people and loves people. St. George’s people need to learn from Kenny – stand up, speak up and take St. George’s back because it belongs to you – tax payers. Since all of this confusion, what has the PLP done for St. George’s one way or the other – NOTHING – they know that the diehards will always vote party line no matter who they put there. I praise the Lord for Mayor Kenny Bascome and his Committee – keep on moving on Mr. Mayor.

    • Eastern says:

      @ EMichael
” we are now in the process of restoring the fairways and rough”
Who do you think you’re foolin’?
The grass at St. George Golf Course is three feet high.
What on earth are you talking about.

  16. St. Geo Voter says:

We will support the Mayor Bascome as long as he does not run OBA – if he does He will NOT get our support – as a matter of fact we heard he went to OBA begging to be the candidate for #1, if so Mr. Bascome will not get our support. He needs to come clean!

    • Swing Voter says:

@ St. Geo Voter, you really need your head checked. St. George is represented 75% Government MP that ain’t done shyt for the town nor the outer area’s. The only claim to fame is the they ‘are from’ St. George…..WTF I’ll vote for a marsian first

    • Eastern says:

      @St. George’s Voter:

Are you going to expect us to vote for Dame Jennifer who has overseen the destruction of St. George’s????

  17. 1minute says:

Ewart just wanted to blow something up…

    • Concerned says:

he did – everything he touched – blown right to hell – every 1st home owners dreams of owning and keeping their own, children in private school, overseas to college, family trips, receiving medical treatment overseas, affording private insurance premiums and paying Dr.’s bills and medication, Seniors not having to decide which to pay first rent/medication/groceries, first time taxi owner, owning a business, construction to be booming, exempt companies coming here and staying, properties rented to support senior parents and to support their dreams and the list goes on…

He wants to come back – send him packing to Cuba and take his co-horts with him – leaving none behind.
