Hamilton Docks To Close On Friday To Prepare

September 5, 2012

[Updated] A statement issued by Stevedoring Services Ltd said that the Hamilton Cargo Docks will be closed on Friday [Sept 7] for deliveries, and encouraged importers to collect any remaining cargo as soon as possible.

CEO Peter Aldrich said: “Given the current track and intensity of Hurricane Leslie and the time required to prepare, the Hamilton Cargo Docks will be closed on Friday September 7th for deliveries.

“Importers are encouraged to collect any remaining cargo as soon as possible. Once Hurricane Leslie passes and it is safe to return to work, it will take us at least one day to reconfigure the Port in order to re-open.

“We will continue to keep you informed and are standing by to ensure that the Port of Hamilton is ready, both before and after Hurricane Leslie,” Mr Aldrich concluded.

Tropical Storm Leslie is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and pass close to Bermuda this weekend, bringing storm force winds on Saturday, and hurricane force winds on Sunday.

Update 10.16am: A statement from Container Ship Managemen said: “Please note that this week’s Oleander is now scheduled to arrive on Monday September 10th. Currently, SSL is informing us that they will be shutting down the Dock Friday the 7th to begin preparing the dock for Hurricane Leslie.

“The Oleander will be arriving as soon as safely possible behind the storm. With the current forecast showing Leslie passing on Sunday with tropical storm force winds continuing into Monday morning, it is difficult to assume when the dock will be ready to discharge the vessel. We will be in touch with Stevedoring Services throughout this storm and will keep you informed as much as possible.

“CSM has a comprehensive plan in place in order to service BCL’s customers in the event that our offices are damaged, or the causeway doesn’t allow us to get to work. We will be shutting down our phone system during the storm. This will be brought back online Monday as soon as safely possible. Please feel free to contact me directly at 704-7964 with any questions or concerns if you are unable to get through to the office. ”

Update 4.11pm: Meyer said: “Stevedoring Services Ltd has announced the closing of the port on Friday, September 7th, in preparation for TS Leslie. Stevedores have recommended that all cargo be removed from the dock prior to the storm’s arrival, and will provide a late gate Thursday evening for cargo deliveries from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.

“REEFER CUSTOMERS NOTE: As part of the port closing, Stevedores will shut off the power supply to reefer units. The power will likely remain off until the storm has passed making it absolutely necessary that you pick up your refrigerated loads before the port closing.

“Should Meyer Freight lose power or phone service; for BISL customers, please contact Voigt Maritime at (212) 635-9580 and for SISL customers, please contact North Florida Shipping at ((904) 261-2662. Additionally, you can reach George Butterfield, Robert Holdipp or Joe Simas on their cellular phones: George (441) 337-8184. Robert (441) 335-9157. Joe (441) 337-8384.
