Bail Increased After Couple Planned To Travel

December 21, 2012

Husband and wife Robert MacRonald, 41, and Tracey MacRonald, 43, who had each been granted bail of $5,000 after pleading not guilty to drugs charges had their bail increased to as much as $100,000 each.

Appearing in Magistrates Court yesterday [Dec 20], The Prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that the $5,000 bail had been set at a Court appearance in December 2012 with a trial date of 5th April 2013.

However the couple had made arrangements to fly out and leave Bermuda on 19th December 2012; and that this would have happened without the Court’s permission.

The Court heard the couple purchased one way tickets, and couple’s lawyer said that the purpose of their trip was to visit a relative who was under medical care.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner said that: “I want to make it clear that no one who is on Court bail is allowed to leave this jurisdiction with the leave of this Court”.

After arguments from their lawyer, the Senior Magistrate altered bail for the MacRonald’s. Their new bail was set at $100,000 each with one like surety, each, if the couple wished to travel. The Magistrate set alternate bail at $20,000 each with a similar surety and a surrender of all their travel documents.
