At approximately 10.15pm this evening [Dec 19] a fire broke out at the old Canadian Hotel in Hamilton. There is some smoke visible in the air, and some sparks can also be seen.

The exact location is unclear, as the fire appears to be in a building off the main road. There are at least four fire engines on scene, and multiple personnel. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.

Update 11.35pm: The fire appears to have ‘broken through’ the roof as flames are now clearly visible.

Update 11.59pm: Quick video of firefighters using a bucket truck to douse the flames with water

Update 12:17am: The fire continues to rage….a photo slideshow is below. More photos are posted here.

Update 12.25am: The building is located down a side road and we can’t see exactly which one it is due to all the smoke, but appears to be the old Canadian Hotel.  A video showing closer look of one side is below.

Update 1.01am: The fire is still blazing, and we are expecting an official update from someone at the scene shortly. Photo of sparks flying at the scene below…

Update 1.06am: The Fire Service said the fire is at the old Canadian Hotel, and there are 25 firefighters and 7 fire trucks on the scene. They said the fire is fairly under control, however they expect to be there for a few more hours. The building is derelict and no one is technically supposed to be living there. The Fire Service said they will be searching the building floor by floor.

Update 2.45am: Photo gallery posted here.

Update 8.46am: A police spokesperson said: “For safety reasons following the fire at the old Canadian Hotel building on Reid Street in the City of Hamilton, traffic will be reduced to one lane on Reid Street in the vicinity of the building and pedestrians will not be allowed near the scene.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience as some traffic delays are anticipated in the area as a result. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.”

Update Dec 20: A police spokesperson said, “The section of Reid Street between King Street and Court Street has now been closed to all traffic until further notice. This is being done as a precaution while structural issues regarding the old Canadian Hotel building recently damaged by fire are addressed.

“The Bermuda Police Service appreciates the public’s continued cooperation and patience as traffic delays are anticipated in the area as a result.”

Seriously Jacka$$. If you have nothing to say, just keep your pie hole closed. I know the building is supposedly abandon, I just hope that no one was in there (vagrants). Thanks to the firefighters

      • ABM says:

Why they gotta be vagrants? Check ya mouth!

        • Mom's Gingerbread says:

I did not mean any disrespect ,what I’m saying is the building is no longer used as living accomodations as it was previously, the people that use to live there had to move, but lets face it there are people who do live on the street and they are homeless. What I was saying is hopefully none of them were in the building because they have been know to go there to sleep.

You had better get yourself a copy of a Bermuda dictionary. apparently the definitions as found in Websters & Oxford dictionarys do not apply to Bermuda.

  6. conspiracytheorist says:

    ok ok. question?
-Did the sale of this building ever go through?
-The parties that were once interested in securing this site still interested.
    -Was the building insured? Claim!
-When will the new Owners of this site be announced
    -We have seen the proposals
    Cha buh’ get ready.

  7. conspiracytheorist says:

ok ok. Fire station around the corner. The blaze was high. Thus use of accelerant!
    Common sense
    via. Wiki…

Accelerants play a major role in chemistry. Most chemical reactions can be hastened with an accelerant. Accelerants alter a chemical bond, speed up a chemical process, or bring organisms back to homeostasis. Accelerants are not necessarily catalysts as they may be consumed by the process. An accelerant can be any substance that can bond, mix, or disturb another substance and cause an increase in the speed of a natural, or artificial chemical process.

  9. Groundhog says:

I hope Ted had the appropriate fire insurance on the building!

  10. enquiring minds says:

i would be interested to know who owns the building?

    • Will says:

same guy who owns the Spot..he was waiting for economy to improve before beginning improvements on the whole area.
Shame though..if this hotel was improved it could have provided a different option to the expensive hotels throughout the Island..could have been used for traveller boarding or as an option for those here for Spring Break.

  11. Patricia says:

I remember reading that no insurance company would insure the building. At least Ted wont have to worry about the cost of tearing it down.

  12. ABM says:

Isn’t the owner of the building bankrupt? Well, I was told he was, not sure if its true or not. Maybe someone can clarify for me.

  13. Gabbani says:

That place should have been knocked down long time ago. It’s. Been a safety hazard for a while. I hope nobody was in there.
