Video: Overturned Car Removed After Collision
At approximately 8.15am this morning [Feb 1] a collision occurred on Harrington Sound Road, in the area known as Shark Hole Hill, which resulted in a vehicle overturning and landing on its side.
Police, Fire and Ambulance personnel attended the scene, and a Regiment soldier driving by also stopped to assist. It appears that the car had two occupants in it when the incident occurred, and they were taken away by ambulance. They could be seen walking around at the scene, and did not appear to be seriously injured.
Traffic was reduced to one lane for about 90 minutes while the vehicle remained in position. It was removed by a tow truck at approximately 9.45am. There has been a number of collisions resulting in cars overturning in recent weeks, including one on this same road.

After I broke my collarbone by sliding out only going 35k up that hill, I contacted W&E via email to resurface that road. I also mentioned how a Taxi had also crashed into the wooden barrier there. The road there is extremely slippery.
It fell on deaf ears.
Isn’t that the 2nd vehicle within the last few weeks, to overturn in that area. And if my memory serves me they looked to be similar vehicles.
It something about that substance that they started using a few years ago on hills and around schools that just doesn’t seem to work in Bermuda.
In the USA and Canada, you will find either concrete or the road cut with lines in it, in areas where speed could be affected by weather and or road conditions.
Maybe we need to have a look at other options.

That road is terrible, the asphalt is polished and crumbling. Cars probably get into a slide on the polished bits, regain traction on the rough crumbled sections while now travelling sideways and get flicked over onto their sides.
Im sure this is a bad area and i suggest people band together and get a petition or something to get it repaired.
In regards, to this vehicle it is just like the last one that flipped here and i pray it is not the same person. If so, they have not learned their lesson or learned how to drive more cautiously and i said they avoid this area from here on out!! Mercy

How do you flip it going up hill? And that corner isnt sharp guys. Check the telephone pole for scrape marks. Looking at the cell phone or setting the bass on the system and not looking ahead maybe…

You probably didn’t see my comment. I broke my collarbone, doing 35k, going uphill, at that exact spot. That road is deadly.
@ Sorry Sir: That stretch of road has been re-surfaced within the last couple of weeks. The road has also been widend at the top of the hill.
I feel sorry that you had an accident like that and weren’t speeding.
The fact of the matter is that not everyone, but far too many people are speeding on the small roads that we have.
I travel from the east end to the west end every day and I have seen just about everything that can be done with cars, bikes and trucks on our small roads and it is crazy.
People need to start “THINKING SERIOUSLY” about what they are doing when they drive.
I know for some that may be a difficult thing to do, but it needs to be done so that they don’t injure or kill themselves or someone else on the road.
My appologies, I stand corrected, the stretch of road running past the entrace to the Govt. Quarry to the bottom of the hill has been re-surfaced. Not after the bend at the bottom of the hill and going west bound.
lol, I was scratching my head for a moment there. There have been a lot of accidents there in recent months.
Also, there are people who own these cars and don’t know how to handle them – seen it many times. Also, some have difficulty parking them as well.
Hoping the occupants are okay – I think it is time we stop putting all of the blame on the roads and seriously look at the drivers. Personally, I don’t like that area and a few other roads.
About 6 months ago I spun out going down that hill after the rain. At the time, I was stuck behind a taxi on a tour doing about 30K. Luckily nothing was coming the other way as i spun 180 degrees and ended up in the other lane. I was dumbfounded. I live in the East and travel that way often. I once came across a little old lady that had spun out in the smae place and went through the fence post toward the water. Something must be wrong with the pitch/angle of the road there.
No more than a couple of days ago, on another thread, I commented on how dangerous the roads are because of the lack of banking on corners, in particular mentioning Shark Hole & the fact that the area is being repaved &, yet again, the corner is as flat & dangerous as ever.
Yet again, we have a crash there which might not have happened if the road was graded properly.
Years ago, I came across a crash there. A visitor, coming down the hill on a rental bike, did not make the corner. He went across the road, hit the bus stop, located at the worst possible place. It killed him.
So much could be done to make the roads safer just by making the roads themselves safer.

There are lots of people with clean records. 40 years crash free in Bermuda here. 20 years since last speeding ticket & that was for what is considered normal speeds these days. Had an accident overseas but that was weather caused. Wind. A blowover driving a high profile vehicle.
Yes Bermuda has some terrible drivers & there is little other reason for the destruction on the roads than our driving habits.
I often wonder how long these people would live if they drove overseas the way they drive here.
Why do we try and blame a certain brand, model, style of vehicle, when it is very apparent our driving habits and speeds are to blame. Atrocious is the word that comes to mind. Surely the rain of this morning, should make us all, to slow down a little and be even more cautious for this type of weather. (not placing blame as maybe a tire was blown or something else)
Sadly, rain seems to bring out the worst in our drivers…it’s almost as though their brain is saying ‘Hmmm…rain, must go faster to get out of it’. It takes me 6 minutes to get to work in the morning…it’s a very short trip…and the idiocy I see in that short distance boggles the mind.
The police are so strong, not only can they hold up traffic wit one hand, only 3 police officers and a civilian can flip a car…im amazed
Look closely at the road surface in this photo, this is actually a good section, it’s much worse further down where the car probably lost control. Take a walk there one day and look at the road surface, you’ll be shocked how bad it really is.

Maybe it was more like you were doing 50 plus kilometers like everyone else, came upon the taxi that was doing a reasonable speed – had to hit the brakes (going downhill – where the road has negative camber)and then slid out? Sounds more plausible to me? Any accident forensics analyst would probably also agree…
I’ve seen it for myself in rain, watched a car spin a 180 on Harbor road, they were doing maybe 30 – 35kph? I was behind them on a bike, was crazy to see!

With all the oil on the roads, it is very easy to slid out when it rains. the oil comes to the top of the road, and makes for very dangerous conditions. You do not have to be speeding for your car to slid.
Why isn’t everyone that used that road at that very time sliding out as well? Did it just get slippery and wet when that vehicle came along?
Thank you very much! I’ve been around that corner before, in the rain, faster than 30K and my car handles it just fine. Tires are designed to be fully functional and 55MPH in the rain, so our “parking lot” speed limits are not even stressing tires that are in good condition. So that person’s tires must’ve been bald, or they just can’t drive and were probably speeding and got surprised by the slow moving taxi.
For the love of God people, if you know you’re driving a Stupid Ugly Vehicle, don’t try and drive it like it’s a sports car!! You know you like to speed, buy something that is useful, or adapt to your vehicle smmfh!!

Let me bore you with a little story . 30 years ago I was behind a nearly new 4 door saloon going down Strawberry Hill towards the junction with Harbour Road. It was a Sunday afternoon and the roads were slightly slick from a shower that had passed about an hour before.
The car was ‘off throttle’ and rolling down the hill at about 18MPH .The driver had not applied the brake yet for the stop at the bottom as it still was hardly in sight. (senior citizens)
All of a sudden the car started twitching slightly and did a complete 180 degree right in front of me. Most amazingly without even hitting the walls on either side of the road. It came to a halt pointing up the hill towards me , who was still going down the hill. We were all stumped , and thank heavens I was keeping my distance. (the most important of good defensive driving techniques)
I’ve never been the same since and therefore hold my tongue before prejuding what the cause of an accident was without having been there.
I was driving bus one day when it was raining, I almost slid out… that hill is dangerous when wet, something is gotta be done about that.
Tell me this, why is it when my grandfather was a bus driver, they all knew how to stay left on any road? Yet bus drivers today can’t stay left to save their lives! I know they’re big vehicles, but damn! Also, why do I keep clocking buses travelling at +65KPH speeds? Like WTH?!
What we never see are the results of any investigations by the police into the cause of these accidents. Surely there must be some investigation carry out, if just for the insurance companies?

Would it be a good idea to have a website that everyone could upload video of all our road users doing stupid things on the road? Most of us have video or still cameras in our phones, maybe get the passenger to record for you, let the driver keep an eye out as the fools come out from everywhere, would be interesting to see who appears more than twice.
Already got that in effect! I now have a HD action camera in my car and it’s only been since Xmas. The amount of ignorance I’ve caught is ridiculous. Motor cyclist running red lights on purpose, riding on the sidewalk to get around a light from the other side, speeding buses that don’t know how to pull off the road completly when picking up passengers smdh, cars passing three cars at a time in tight road conditions etc.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could submit that type of stuff to the police and they issue tickets?
