February 19, 2013

The Bermuda Police Service is reminding the public that it is a criminal offence to pass to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency.

A police spokesperson said, “Members of the public should remain vigilant regarding counterfeit Bermuda and U.S. currency, while retailers are reminded to ensure their employees are aware of the importance of taking a few seconds to examine the money they are taking in, especially the larger denominations.

“If counterfeit cash is detected during a transaction, staff receiving the fake money should hold on to it, note the description of the individual who tendered it and contact police immediately.

“Similarly, members of the public who may have unknowingly received counterfeit currency are encouraged to report it at the earliest opportunity.

“It is a criminal offence to pass to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency; punishable by up to five years in prison.

“Any suspicious circumstances regarding counterfeit currency should be reported directly to the main police number 295-0011 or via the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
