The Women in Sports weekend came to a close yesterday [Apr 28], with an Expo held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. It began with a Banquet on Friday night, continued with a run on Sunday morning, and concluded with an Expo on Sunday afternoon.

The Expo was spread between two rooms with sporting organizations and sport related merchandise suppliers displaying their wares in one and speakers and demonstrations held in the other. Speakers scheduled to speak included many of Bermuda’s top female athletes along with Bahamian sprinter Pauline Davis and ESPN sports journalist Bonnie Bernstein.

Demonstrations were held throughout the afternoon including zumba, salsa, Jump 2b Fit skipping, gymnastics and a sports fashion show featuring some of Bermuda’s female athletes wearing some of the latest sports uniform fashions.

Speaking after the weekend’s event, BNAA President Donna Watson said, “I can sum it up in one word – fantastic. This event was much more than our committee could ever have hoped for. From the Friday night banquet with Lisa Leslie and what a great motivational speaker she was.

“Her speech gave the youth and the adults a lot to think about and life long lessons which everyone of the speakers the next day quoted something from Lisa’s speech. A full house what more could you ask for. The next morning the 5k run/walk and Little girls rock 1 mile run around 300 people and our overseas guests participating, that was great. The expo with all of our speakers telling their stories and each leaving lasting memories not only for the youth but us as adults.

” The demonstrations throughout the day, fantastic which involved the young to the old. The booths, over 32 set up with bikes, mini golfs, pliates machines, rowing machines and people coming and going all day. When I was sitting in the restaurant and watched people come in with all of this different equipment I was totally blown away.

“All in all this was a great weekend and as stated below truly went over our expectations and anything that I could have dreamed off. Everyone keeps asking if we are make this an annual event, we may do the run but I think we will have it bi-annually. I will have to discuss with my committee when we have the post mortem.
