May 29, 2013

In Magistrates Court this morning [May 29] a hotel manager denied charges of hiring foreign nationals without the correct permission.

The manager of Grotto Bay Hotel, Johannes Martens, denied employing five American nationals in April of this year without the written consent from the Minister of Home Affairs, ZBM News reported today. Mr Martens was released on $10,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until next month.

Last month, Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy confirmed that Department of Immigration Inspectors visited the property of the Grotto Bay Hotel to investigate an immigration violation complaint.

  1. Tina says:

Ok since he denied it who gave him permission for the people to be working in Bermuda? Half the hotel staff saw the people working.

    • Sir George Somers says:

It wasn’t allowed hence the court case

    • jurgen Dale says:

This has been going on for almost 20 years.
This Manager is a foreign national himself.
Maybe he needs to go home.
We do not need a foreign national to disadvantage the people of this country.
This has gone on for way to long at Grotto Bay.
Finally he will get a day in court.

  5. plank44 says:

    the buck stop with him

  6. Bobmarlin says:

The OBA looking out for Bermudians!

  7. plank44 says:

HR Department does not have the power to hire a snake and the hotel manager is a yes man can’t stand on his own two feet

  8. Why on earth is this issue not being expose to the greatest lengths, somone has an axe to grind with the Grotto Bay resort and this matter has every right to be exposed.

The thing that makes me laugh is that so many employers have gotten away with it and hiring folk under the wire and pushing them through the right channels further down the road, after they have already been employed with the establishments for some time, but some fool would say that is speculation.

Bermuda is still being sold to the highest bidder and control by those that hold the economic welath, that is the reason why gambling will be made legal in this country also. Those who are investing the papers that secure the big dollars call the shots.

We are just a pond in the scheme after all is said and done.

    • Liable Falsifications says:

May be you all need to get the facts before making your ingornant comments. Most of you are grammatically incorrect or just find it hard to try to correctly spell words on a computer that automatically corrects spelling. Maybe that’s why most of you sit around all day making ridiculously over the top slanderous comments. Being well versed in law and local news, which it seems most of you aren’t, this is a case that is being blown out of proportion. I thought we lived in a country that was democratic with a justice system that is primarily structured upon the phrase “innocent until PROVEN guilty”. Once again the ignorant masses have convicted unjustly before a courthouse. What is being written about Mr. JP Martens is liable (since I feel that none of you understand what that means because of the uneducated comments I’m reading liable means you’re talking about someone in a dirty, false way only backing your material with crazy, backwards bias which isn’t factually based. You could be brought up on charges your self for the un factually based lies.) Seeing as you all seem to be tethered to society by a thin thread you probably have the news read to you by someone with that capability. If your wet nurse hasn’t read you the news since this article you wouldn’t have seen the article about Mr. Martens receiving the Trip Advisor Award for the second year in a row. Grotto Bay is the only hotel on island that is not being funded with government money. They are the only hotel holding their weight and 20 years ago that was a different situation for Grotto Bay. 20 years ago when Grotto Bay was in shambles and Mr. Martens came to the island to turn the hotel around. Obviously he did a fantastic job regardless of the fact that he is not Bermudian. Is it wrong to go to another country to work after university? I’m a Bermudian citizen and I want to work abroad, much like most of my educated Bermudian friends. What is the difference between Mr. Martens and myself other than the countries we choose to work in? Many of you have been to other countries to work without being a citizen because you found a love for where you were. All Mr. Martens has done is love Bermuda and his place of employment to the extent that he goes out of his way to create a better work environment for his employees. Who cares were these Expats are from. If they are qualified and hard workings (seeing that the commentators on this post don’t know the meaning of hard work or higher education I understand if this comment flys right over your heads) why should we deter them? We need the help! My generation is looking for work abroad because of the civil distraction and hatred the older generations have for each other. Until a more progressive mindset is adapted by the older generations of Bermudians this island is going to suffer and be transported back into a social dark-age.

      • Jeeze... says:

        its Libel.

        Idiot.

        • Liable Falsifications says:

OMG!!! Look it up. YOU IDIOT!!

          • Leaper says:

Libel – is defamation by the written word

            Liable – is legal responsibility

The correct term for your above statements is in fact libel.

        • How ignorant... says:

“its” is actually “It’s” and “Libel” is “liable”, but it’s ok. You’re probably just very uneducated. Can’t blame you, can we?

      • Nuffin but da Truth says:

wonder what you got for writing this nonsense?

  9. Plank 44 says:

If the OBA was looking out for Bermudians the front desk manager would be back in Canada , and the qualify assistant would the position .
And the Dining room captain who came here as a busboy off the QE 2 would be back in Romania and one of the three thousands un employed Bermudians would have a job

    • jurgen Dale says:

I was told when I worked at Grotto Bay that she was from Hawaii.

      • Nuffin but da Truth says:

you were lied too,she is not from Hawaii, she is of very mixed origin and came here from Canada.
        (Bossy little person too).

        • I'm just sayin... says:

Can we stop with the petty personal attacks and just deal with the facts?

What does this persons ethnic makeup have to do with anything?

Comments of this ilk just muddy the waters, can we all agree that its about time a case like this is going to court?

    • Grubster says:

Interesting point about the “Romanian busboy” at Grotto Bay. Genuine question, but why is it though that in lots of other hotel restaurants around the island, the majority of waiting staff are from India, The Philipines, Romania etc. Did Bermudians apply for these jobs?

      • Sandy Bottom says:

And which party was in power when these people actually got their work permits?

      • nobody says:

First QE2 had no busboys , all were waiters and second that guy was promoted as cpt here , in a dept head meeting made entirely by bermudians. Thank you !

  10. swing voter says:

enough of this madness. hefty fine of 20K will discourage others from doing the same. I heard another story about a young hardworking Bdian that was the victim of a racial slur by a 3rd world guest worker. Hope immigration ship his azz home

    • Grubster says:

Yes, and I heard a Bermudian shop worker telling a fellow customer how her son had been disciplined by a “foreign” teacher at Cedarbridge/Berkley (can’t recall which one now), and no foreigner was going to tell him what to do. Also that she had reported him to immigration and that her cousin worked there and that would send his sorry ass home.

Racist comments or anti foreigner comments are never acceptable whoever they are aimed at.

      • I'm just sayin... says:

There is a reason why heresay isn’t accepted in a court of law, come to think of it maybe it shouldn’t be accepted here either.

  11. Cleancut says:

It’s not business as usual anymore, there’s a new government in town.

  13. Nuffin but da Truth says:

That GM will be denying the Kitchen was re furbished a few years ago by Non Bermudians next.

  14. blazer says:

I know from talking to tourists that, if they wanted to here an accent from i.e. India, they would have went to India, so on and so on.
Most tourists love to hear the local accent.

  15. stupidity says:

this is craziness… someone needs tobe on top of all the businesses that are doing this non-sense. the incoming foreign staff get the worst treatment. smh, saddd
