Strengthening Families Toolkit Brochure

May 15, 2013

The Ministry of Environment and Planning with the support of the Ministry of Community and Cultural Development and in recognition of The International Day of Families shared the outcome of work by the Sustainable Development Roundtable [SDRT] on the important subject of ‘Strengthening Families’.

“The SDRT has prepared the brochure entitled Strong Families Make Strong Communities. This brochure serves as a Toolkit, containing a set of very helpful recommendations on keeping our families strong”, a Ministry spokesperson said.

“It is a critical and useful resource to help individuals, families and communities build relationships and strengthen connections with each other.

“To produce this brochure, the SDRT worked in partnership with several agencies, inside and outside of Government, which has some responsibility for strengthening our families.”

“This Toolkit contains valuable information and practical examples of ways in which we can support and strengthen our families… something which has been part of the OBA Platform from the beginning,” stated Minister of The Environment and Planning Sylvan Richards.

“We know the value of strong families and the direct link to our island’s social and economic sustainability.”

“This Toolkit is based on the premise that strong families require three fundamentals:

  • Loving and nurturing relationships,
  • Quality support systems, and
  • Financial stability.

“This Government knows that most children raised in families with these three fundamentals generally grow up to become caring, contributing, and successful adults in their communities.”

“The Toolkit will provide users with a necessary guide on ways in which to intentionally develop, improve and solidify these essential requirements. It highlights ways that individuals and families can move towards better relationships, financial stability and healthy support systems.

“Strong families contribute to secure and safe neighbourhoods which are essential to maintaining the Island’s image as a jurisdiction of choice for business and as a place to live with a healthy quality of life.”

“It will also be easily printable by agencies for those persons without access to technology, and copies will be available from key locations including relevant government departments, libraries, seniors’ centres, helping agencies, and Churches.”

Minister Richards expressed his thanks to the SDRT for taking the initiative and creating this helpful Toolkit.

“This Strengthening Families Toolkit looks to supplement and reinforce recommendations contained in the Sustainable Development Plan.”
