Cows Sick, Two Die After Salmonella Outbreak

June 4, 2013

[Updated] The Ministry of Environment and Planning said that a local farm has reported five sick cows, including two sudden deaths, over the past week due to an outbreak of Salmonella. As the farm produces no milk, this presents no threat to the public supply of milk.

The Ministry said, “The cows had recently been imported from overseas. Necropsies on the two dead cows confirmed abnormalities located throughout the gastro-intestinal tract. Samples taken from the animals were sent to KEMH and the Department of Health who have now both confirmed the presence of high levels of Salmonella in the samples.

“Salmonella is a normal inhabitant of the gut; however, stressors can upset the normal balance of gut flora leading to Salmonella overgrowth. The lack of signs in other animals on the farm suggests that the organism is not in feed or water supply. Concurrent Clostridial infection is also suspected.

“All affected animals are located at one farm only. As a result of a management decision taken about a year ago, this farm houses no milking cows, only dry, non-milking animals. This farm produces no milk, and thus it is important to stress that no milk has left the farm for the purpose of human consumption during this time. Thus this outbreak of Salmonella presents no threat to the public supply of milk. Therefore there is no immediate concern for the health of the general public.

“A local farm veterinarian, Dr. Dane Coombs is handling the on-farm response. The surviving ill animals they are being treated with fluid therapy and appropriate antibiotics and are responding well.

“No cows of local origin have been affected, as the imported animals were kept separate from the resident animals by the farm operator/manager. Such separation of new arrivals is standard protocol, and for the very reason that this case illustrates. This case has also been an exercise in infection control, so to avoid infection of employees themselves.

“However, as a precaution, the farm workers have been advised on how to protect themselves and how to avoid spreading infection beyond the boundaries of this farm. Cleaning/disinfection of the facility will occur prior to any future milking at that site. Further testing of the animals can occur in conjunction with the Department of Health as warranted.

“The Ministry thanks all those who have worked cooperatively to minimize the impact of this outbreak.”

Update 5.09pm: A spokesperson from Dunkley’s Dairy said, “As reported in various news media outlets today, Dunkley’s has been made aware, by the farmer, of the deaths of two recently imported cows as a result of Salmonella.

“These were non-milking cows and were kept separate from milking cows. Dunkley’s wishes to assure their customers that this poses no threat to Dunkley’s milk supply. The public can take comfort in the fact that Dunkley’s employs strict quality control and that all raw and processed milk undergoes strict daily laboratory testing”

For all you know more than a cow farmer people that are commenting and sounding like a bunch of negative people, these cows were imported a few weeks ago and are still young. They are not in direct contact with any other cows on that farm . They will be introduced into the herd when they have been deemed to be free of any illness should there be any, in this case there has been salmonella ,and after they have settled in. Next time read and try to understand what you are reading, instead of knowing everything about cows and none of you have ever been around a cow, understand what a dairy is about, or have even cared for a cow.

    • Say no says:

So you are saying when (or if) they are free from salmonella, we should eat them? I think I will refrain from beef from now on. If they did not know these cows were sick when they bought them in, then how are we to know that when they are “free” from illness, they did not miss something there also. Because you are deemed free from an illness, do not mean there is any residue.

      • Say no says:

should have said ” does not mean there isn’t any residue

    • Sapphire says:

@Fair Exchange: Take a chill pill. Not everyone can be an expert on cows, chickens and country music (in that order) like you are.

You have the nerve to talk about people not knowing what they’re talking about…well, you are the most uninformed person on the planet. You have NO clue how technology even works-you’re still flabbergasted over how the internet works…it wasn’t invented yesterday, you know-it’s just that YOU discovered it yesterday. Look up old-fashioned in the dictionary and your photo is under it.

When you’re ready to get into the 21st century like the rest of us, please let us know.

  6. fair exchange says:

Sapphire, you are making it out to be an attack on a person that you think Fair Exchange is. Well, its not that person. In your rant there is nothing that refers to the subject story. So, you need to take two chill pills.
