Cruise Jobs Orientation Sessions This Week
The Ministry of Home Affairs is reminding those interested in working with Norwegian Cruise Lines that it will be hosting employment orientation sessions on July 23 and 24.
The Ministry has partnered with Norwegian to provide a unique employment opportunity for Bermudians, and this week representatives from Norwegian’s Employment Office will be on-Island to provide an overview of the jobs available, outline the criteria for prospective applicants, review employment applications, commence the interview process, and provide general information about life onboard a cruise ship.
The employment briefings take place July 23 at the Bermuda College Student Centre from 8.30 a.m. – 12 noon and 1.00 p.m. – 4.00 p.m., with the interview sessions taking place the following day on July 24.
Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy said, “For the past several weeks the Department of Workforce Development in partnership with NCL has conducted an onboard employment recruitment process. As an onboard employee, Bermudians will join an international team and have an opportunity to meet thousands of people, build lifelong friendships, learn new skills and ultimately bring those skills back home and apply them here in our own workforce.
“Norwegian is currently searching for dynamic hospitality professionals to join their onboard team to bring their innovative and renowned Freestyle Cruising to life. Their ships visit some of the most beautiful places on earth, so we see this as an incredibly unique employment opportunity for Bermudians and we truly hope that people will take advantage of what’s on offer at NCL.”
To find out more information, interested persons should visit the Department of Workforce Development or www.gov.bm to fill out an online registration form to reserve a spot for this week’s orientation sessions.
And the Department of Workforce Development is reminding those individuals who are scheduled to attend this Tuesday and Wednesday that they should be dressed appropriately in business attire.
Positions available, to name a few, are:
- Assistant Waiters/ess
- Bar Servers
- Assistant Pastry Cooks
- Assistant Bakers
- Assistant Cooks
- Jr. Engine Seafarers
- Jr. Deck Seafarers
- Restaurant Steward/ess
- Bartenders
Minister Fahy concluded, “We are excited about the partnership that has been established, and we look forward to a productive working relationship with one of our longest serving cruise partners as we endeavour to seek innovative opportunities to get Bermudians back to work.”
Sounds like an interesting opportunity in these difficult times. Hopefully, some will seriously consider.
I wish I younger, I would live to see more of the world and get some experience.
Opportunity in these difficult times!??!?!?!?
There are hundreds of foreigners working as Assistant Waiters/ess, Bar Servers, Assistant Pastry Cooks, Assistant Bakers, Assistant Cooks or Restaurant Steward/ess who came to Bermuda with ZERO prior experience.
The only reason these times are difficult is that the OPPORTUNITY is given to a foreigner by employers or managers & our past & present minister does not have either the guts or the know how to straighten out the department of immigration & the under handing of employers & managers. Instead Fahy goes & looks for other ways to get out of the mess that don’t involve him stepping on his business mates toes.
Didn’t Grotto Bay get fined recently?
I understand what you are saying regarding foreigners with zero experience but if you are a Bermudian with zero experience, here is a chance to get some and get those jobs back.
If i were 18-20 and wondering what to do with my life I’d seize this opportunity for the adventure at least (it will also be hard work i’m sure).
In the current climate, nobody is going to give you anything. you need to seize opportunities.
This is a golden opportunity. I say to our youth, give it a try, what have you to loose? I am sure you will love the respect and confidence that you will attain from such an experience. I did 14 yrs on ships. I have lifetime friends from all over the world.
To those fortunate enough to have experienced the “Spirit of Bermuda”, this is the next step. God Luck Shipmates !
What I find ironically amazing is that 7 out of 9 jobs listed here are ones on island dominated by foreign workers who started these jobs with just as much or more accurately as little experience as the locals who will be given these jobs on the cruise line. There are hundreds of companies here that have these positions but Michael Fahy sends locals to NCL to find these jobs. NCL will not pay these Bermudians more than what a foreigner makes in one of these jobs on island & most likely will even pay less. All this proves is that Fahy does not have what it takes to do his ministerial job so he passes the buck in order to save face.
There are workers coming off these ships when they dock looking for & finding work in Bermuda even after only one year on the ship. Figure that one out minister fahy.
