Sixth Tropical Storm Of 2013 Season Forms

August 26, 2013

After gaining official designation as a tropical disturbance early on Sunday [Aug 25] as it formed in the Gulf of Mexico, the storm formerly known as Tropical Depression Six was officially renamed as Tropical Storm Fernand, mere hours before it made landfall near Veracruz, Mexico.

The sixth storm of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Fernand is not expected to impact the island, with the Bermuda Weather Service saying its closest point of approach to Bermuda has passed.

Fernand became the sixth tropical storm of the season when a Hurricane Hunter aircraft registered sustained tropical storm force winds at 6:30 PM local time on Sunday. With maximum sustained winds of 80 km/h, the storm eventually made landfall about 40 km north of Veracruz at 11:45 PM on Sunday, bringing heavy rain to the area along with high winds.

The storm is expected to continue to bring extreme weather to south central Mexico over the next few days, but its strength will decrease rapidly as it interacts with the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains; still, there remains a risk of heavy flooding and mudslides in the region in the meantime.
