Man, Woman Plead Guilty To Stealing From Buzz

September 24, 2013

A man and a woman today [Sept 24] pleaded guilty to stealing from Buzz Cafe earlier this month, with the Court hearing the female defendant initially denied taking part as she has four children and is pregnant with her fifth.

Garrett Burrows, 46, and Krystal Smith, 31, both pleaded guilty to trespassing and stealing a money pouch belonging to the Buzz Café operation at Bakery Lane, Pembroke. The theft occurred around 4:00am on 7th September and was captured on the store’s CCTV system.

Crown Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the Court that the theft was discovered by a store employee when she started work in the morning and noticed that the money pouch containing the store’s $750 float was missing. Store employees viewed the CCTV and partially identified both culprits.

Police arrested Burrows and Smith, and after questioning and ID checks against the CCTV, both admitted the trespass and theft.

Ms Smith said that she had four children, was pregnant with a fifth, and that was why she had initially denied taking part.

The Magistrate ordered Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre and Social Inquiry Reports on Burrows; and remanded him into custody until November. A Social Inquiry Report was ordered for Ms Smith and she was granted bail of $1,000.

How about the father or fathers of the children? Shouldn’t they get a surgery also? Why are they not paying? We don’t live under sharia law so why is it that men are exempt from responsibilities of their action while women aren’t.

Unfortunatly the idea of getting pregnant like this has become the norm and in many cases aceptable.
The big question is – Did She steal to put food on the table or did she do it to get her Hair and nails done and buy
a expensive Cell Phone.—— hey in some cases this what they do with the Child Support money!
I feel sorry for the Children.

  12. Decisions says:

And you wonder why we have problems in Bermuda?

  13. Ride says:

Instead of initially denying it because she is pregnant and currently has 4 children she should initially not do it.

Yes, times are though and pockets tight but you have to weigh the risks against the rewards. Perhaps she did and believes due to her current state if caught her sentence would be light.

However, did she also consider that with a conviction for theft that it will be very difficult for her to find employment. There are a lot of people un- or under-employed with no criminal record. Why should an employer take a known thief on and the extra cost/time of monitoring her?

So sad to see this cycle continue (begin?).

    Easy money ain’t so easy.

Gosh. 4 kids and 1 on the way is bad but why are you out at 4:00am in the morning? Where are the 4 kids? Sounds to me she needs help and these poor kids. This might be a wake up call. Hope she gets it soon.

  15. stern says:

What a crying shame…. Like the saying goes. YOU MAKE YOUR BED HARD YOU LIE IN IT. As I read in an earlier comment “second chance”. This individual has had many chances in life and has not taken heed. May god continue to bless her four children . This is so sad , however she needs a wake up call. Can’t say much for HELP because she appears to refuse it. The male involved in this case needs a good beating and should never want to show his face in public again. In fact neither should want to be in public again. Where is the mother of this woman? Obviously she has turned a blind eye to reality. Help this woman now or child number SIX will follow as the fifth one is coming. SMH. SO SAD!!!

  16. Tommy Chong says:

Most of the commenters so far are focusing on this mother & the amount of children she has but last I remember in sex ed I was taught it takes two to tango unless there’s a clinic in BDA offering free artificial inseminations. Yes she should be using birth control but males should be taking precautions also not just to avoid unwanted pregnancy but for other more serious preventions.

One of the biggest reasons for the deterioration of society in Bermuda is the lack of responsibility that the males in BDA are allowed. I have a lawyer friend who’s main gripe at Bermuda’s justice system is the leniency that is given by DPP & judges for dead beat dads. There’s hundreds of fathers here who don’t pay support for their children & it’s happened for so many years it has caused many other problems in our society. My lawyer friend has told me that it’s not just low income men who refuse to pay for their children & that many are also wealthy men from the high end of society. These men need to see the inside of west gate so they will think twice before going bareback again & so they have a motivation to support the children they’ve had a part in making.

    • Ride says:

      @Tommy Chong

I think most are focusing on the mother because she’s the subject of the article. You are correct that both parties mother and father(-ers?) should be more responsible concerning limiting their intimate relations’ potential for procreation.

As it does take “two to tango” let us look at the other side of the coin. I would not pin the blame of Bermuda’s social woes on fathers withholding child support payments. I think it is to easy to disparage them all as “dead beat dads” and then say they are the problem. Are you aware that a great many mothers wield their children as a weapon against the father; for whatever reason. They obstruct or completely prevent access in blatant contravention of court orders. When have you last heard of anything being done about this; even with the fathers lobby group that has been created? Out of frustration that nothing is being done to hold the mothers to account for court ordered instruction some fathers withhold payment out of desperation.

If these obstructive mothers truly cared for the well-being of their child(ren) instead of “getting even” or “hurting him” then they would not obstruct access. It is well known that the benefits of an active positive male figure (especially for boys) works wonders. Yet these obstructive mothers, so blinded, contribute significantly to the decay of our society. Who has labelled them “dead beat mothers”? No one! It is a cowardly and easy cup out to generalising all the males and attack them without looking at the other partner in the dance.

Also, not paying (or being able to pay) is no indication of a man’s ability to be a positive and constructive influence in a child’s life. Fatherhood has little to do with money. It has everything to do with being active in the child’s life. Just think, after the obstructive mothers frustrate the fathers to the sidelines they go running around for a male role model. Do they ask these men to pay a monthly (weekly?) fee for access to the child?

All that aside, the truth is that not all non-paying fathers are “dead beats” and not all obstructive mothers are “dead beats”. So in the end we should just drop these generalisations since, as outsiders looking in, we are in no way able to accurately assess so many intimate relationships and how they got to the point of a father not paying or a mother not allowing access.

As a female, it is up to ME if I want to have baby or not. I take the necessiary precautions. You can’t rely on anybody but your self. Never put that power in the hands of anybody, especially the current man in your life – who says he’ll be there tomorrow?
