New Executive Director: Dr. Charlotte Andrews
The St. George’s Foundation has named Bermudian and heritage specialist Dr. Charlotte Andrews as its new Executive Director. Dr. Andrews brings fifteen years experience in heritage and museum work to the charity dedicated to preserving and promoting Bermuda’s World Heritage Site.
Dr. Andrews said “I am honoured and excited to lead The St. George’s Foundation, which plays an instrumental role in managing our World Heritage Site as a community resource and cultural tourism product. I look forward to working with TSGF’s dedicated board, staff and volunteers and collaborating with heritage sector partners in the east end and across the Island. Capturing community knowledge, ideas and energy will also be key to determining and achieving our heritage management goals.”
Dr. Andrews earned her Masters and PhD degrees in Heritage and Museum Studies from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, UK. She has conducted extensive research on Bermuda’s maritime and underwater heritage, interviewing hundreds of Bermudians about their connections with the sea and shipwrecks.
While Curator of the Bermuda Maritime Museum—now the National Museum of Bermuda—she curated new exhibits throughout the restored Commissioner’s House including groundbreaking displays on the transatlantic slave trade and slavery in Bermuda and the Island’s military heritage and war veterans. Most recently, she served as consultant curator for major new shipwreck exhibits at the National Museum of Bermuda and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in North Carolina.
Dr. Andrews is a member of the Bermuda Culture and Heritage Alliance, the Historic Wrecks Authority, the Bermuda National Trust Archaeological Research Committee and Bank of Bermuda Foundation’s Arts, Culture, Heritage & Environment Committee, and will soon join the World Heritage Site Management Committee.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Andrews lead The St. George’s Foundation and our next phase of heritage work for the Town of St. George” said TSGF Chairman Rick Spurling. “Charlotte brings professional heritage expertise and an expansive understanding of how our unique community uses the past. Her extensive experience with collections, exhibits, archaeology, historic sites, community outreach and other heritage matters is most relevant to our mission. Her energy and enthusiasm will also help propel both the World Heritage Site management plan and TSGF’s fundraising forward.”
“Our Board looks forward to working with Charlotte who takes over from our long-serving Executive Director Sharon Jacobs in January. Sharon passes the torch to Charlotte having led the successful capital campaign to restore the Queen’s Warehouse into the World Heritage Centre in addition to achieving numerous other TSGF projects and programmes.
“We are indebted to Sharon for her many years of tireless and inspiring leadership. We also thank our Membership, Events and Volunteer Director, Mrs.Barbara Maguire, who is also retiring, for her tremendous dedication and successful work in building the TSGF membership as well as developing our specialised fundraising initiatives of the “Second Hand Rose Charity Shoppe” and our annual raffle promotions. We wish Sharon and Barbara all the best in their future endeavours.
“We are looking forward to the coming year and are excited to be building our new team”, Mr. Spurling concluded.
