RUBiS Squash Tournament Kicks Off This Week

October 14, 2013

The annual RUBiS Divisional Handicap takes place again this week at the BSRA Club in Devonshire. The event now in its 6th year boasts 72 competitors in 5 divisions playing across 5 days of intense competition.

Top seed in the A Division is South African Anthony Fellowes who will begin his campaign with a tricky opening match against talented Irishman Podge Browne. The rules of the event allow for each player to be given a handicap to level out the scoring and make for some very interesting match ups throughout the draws.

Fellowes, if he reaches his seeding will have to battle past Browne and tough opposition that could include former Bermuda veteran Champion Richard Brewer, current Bermuda Under 19 #1 Nazhir Smith and former Bermuda International Andrew Robinson.

Divisions B and C are topped by Colin Couper and Joanne Bielby respectively. Couper will be hoping to go one better than 2012 where he lost out in a scintillating final in 5 games, although his half of the draw is packed with peril with Denise Kyme, Susie Lacey and Dylan Muldoon who beat him in that 2012 final all ready for action.

Bielby will face Elias Abdalla in the opening round and will have to fight through some tough matches to get to the finals where she is seeded to meet Derek Theisen.

The RUBiS Divisional Handicap Squash Tournament always hosts a very popular Junior event running alongside the adult tournament and this year is no different with 16 of Bermuda’s top juniors competing for the RUBiS Title and the RUBiS Squash Scholarship that goes along with it. This year the Junior favorite will be Dylan Pratt who in 2012 became Caribbean Under 13 Champion. Dylan will be hard to beat but players such as 11 year old Anaya Smith, Kaleo Place & Taylor Carrick both 12 years old, and top girls Tiye Williams, Olivia Lindsey & Susanna Armano are all vying for a shot at the title and should be great for the crowds to watch.

Entrance to the RUBiS Divisional Handicap is free and spectators are welcome down at the BSRA. Play will start from 6pm nightly from 15-18th and finals on Saturday 19th begin at 5pm.
