Typhoon Victims: Government To Donate $50,000

November 13, 2013

[Updated] Premier Craig Cannonier announced today [Nov 13] that the Government of Bermuda will donate $50,000 to the Bermuda Red Cross cash appeal for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which swept through the Philippines earlier this month, killing thousands of people.

According to international reports, more than 11 million people have been affected by the Typhoon and in particular the Philippine city of Tacloban, which had population of more than 220,000.

Premier Cannonier said, “Our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims and their families in the wake of this catastrophic typhoon.

“As fellow islanders, we know the devastation that hurricanes can bring as we have weathered many, many storms. The Filipino community is an integral and important part of Bermuda and we understand and identify with their anguish. The loss of life is truly overwhelming.”

He added, “One of the basic tenets of this government is that we are truly our brother’s keeper. As such, we readily pledge these funds with the knowledge that they will reach those who have been most affected.”

The island’s telecommunications companies have been quick out the gate to assist, with Logic offering free long distance calls to the Philippines from their Victoria Street retail store, and text message donation services set up by both CellOne and Digicel, who also both announced they will be making $10,000 donations to the relief efforts.

The Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, who have repeatedly thanked the community for the support, held a fundraising lunch on Monday which raised $10,000. Over 300 people attended the event including the Governor and Minister Michael Fahy.

As an ongoing campaign, people can donate to the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda by online transfer to the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, Bank of Butterfield Account No. 2000 6060 258 204 100.

In addition, the Bermuda Red Cross has launched a cash appeal to support the British Red Cross’ launch to help assist the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Governor George Fergusson confirmed that money raised by the Bermuda Red Cross will be matched pound for pound by the Disasters Emergency Committee in the UK.

Update 4.31pm: As of this writing, the Bermuda Red Cross has received $93,350 in pledges and donations since Monday [Nov 11] and the fundraising will continue via a number of methods including cell phone text donations, collection tins, school grub days and more.

Government donated $50,000; Digicel has donated $10,000; CellOne has pledged to match text donations through their service up to $10,000, and numerous Bermuda residents have made individual donations.

The overall contribution of the island’s community has topped the $100,000 mark, with $10,000 being donated to the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, after some 300 people attended a fundraising lunch on Monday.

thats why i used the words i understand…Im not saying they shouldnt help them cause thats the humane thing to do but did they have to give so much? Some of OUR people need it just as bad as they do. The government cant find money to help their own people but they can drop 50,000 at the drop of a dime? somethings not adding up. If Bermudas economy wasnt do f’d up it 50,000 wouldnt be so bad but we need every dime we can get. OUR people are struggling too OUR people are homeless too OUR people are starving too OUR people are crying help for help too OUR country is in crisis too!

      • In all honesty we have been a great source of relief for millions in times passed and throughout our history, there are those that will give out of their own pocket and rightfully so, but say what you want, I to believe Government can and should do more for it’s own. so while looking out for others, look out for those in this country that is coming up to the festive season and don’t have a job or income to even put food on the table, and in some cases don’t even have a table.

The Philippines have a terrible disaster and if you are watching the news, they are being offered to be taken and flown to other regions within the Philippines and being aided, we have Bermudians that have no damn where to go and a financial assistance program that is a joke, how can you tell a Bermudian we want you to fill in a form for assistance and then take a form each week out to 12 employers to prove you are actively looking for employment before they would give you a dime to help you.

I have said it before and i will say it again, that is all fine for procedure and protocol if their was jobs out there to give the people, then they wont be asking for a hand out but a hand up.

Take care of your own Bermuda and then you may just be surprised how far we can help others.

    • The Fact says:

I dont think you understand how Government or other organisations work who regularly donate or sponsor events. They have budgets for these sort of things. Unfortunately, there will be 1 or 2 less sponsored events this year by gov because of this donation. DEFINITELY worth it.

      • SC says:

You contradicted yourself if they budgeted for this then they shouldnt have any problem sponsoring any events!! So obviously it WASNT budgeted for if they have to pull the money from other sources… so i think that you dont understand how they work.

        • The Fact says:

          Budget for 2013 = 100k
          10 events sponsored in 2013

          Same Budget for 2014 = 100k
          Donation for disaster = 50k
Now only 5 events get sponsorship in 2014 because only 50k left.

I think i understand this process quite clearly

    • smh says:

I think it’s a good idea to donate but I think a more creative effort would have been to send the regiment. They are getting paid anyway and direct labor would help more than money!

      • Really?! says:

Lol. And whos paying for the tickerts across the world and accomafation and food and the obvious additional expenses that for some reason you ignore???

There are many bermudians struggling…yes ofcourse but come on people!!! Have u not clued in to the conditions down there at the moment! Stop being so selfish

    • Godson says:

As I’ve stated previously, Bermuda is not as broke as we have been made to believe. We spend money on what we want to spend it on. This is a very good reason to spend money, however, i think that our govt can and should do more for our own people also. We have been tricked into believing that Bermuda has no money. It’s called politricks … We find $80,000 per year to house 1 inmate. Surely, we can save some money there, if we find alternate ways of punishing people (work to repay victims, volunteer @ social programs, speak to schools/kids etc). Many of our gov’t ministers fly out at every chance that they get, in order to promote our island. If your house is a mess, you won’t invite people over to show it off. GET OUR HOUSE IN ORDER…,FIND THE MONEY LIKE HOW YOU FOUND THIS DONATION….AGAIN WE SHOULD HAVE SENT THE MONEY TO THE PHILIPPIANS, AS THEY NEED IT, BUT WE CAN DO MORE TO HELP OUR OWN…peace…if you can spend thousands of dollars to try and sell , Bermuda to the Islamic community, but have dysfunctional CCTV, i ask who are you really trying to help?

    • Hair says:

      I wonder why???

  2. No Effin Way! says:

But no money for the Urgent Care Centre…

OBA – TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN!!!

    • aceboy says:

Yea, because the OBA are all Philipinos. What a stupid comment.

  3. watching says:

We are financially strapped but this is the right thing to do.

  4. Shango says:

Rather than send cash, maybe send a few of the Regiment troops to assist? They’d be getting paid anyway, and hands on the ground often makes more difference in alleviating suffering than just cash. We could coordinate our Regiment response with that of our neighbors in the US to ensure we are able to assist to maximum effect. Maybe even hitch a ride with them to reduce costs.

  5. bermyguy says:

a watse of money if we are in debt what sense does it make to donate money to a country/problem that isnt ours

    • Michelle says:

      Wow.. Unbelievable…

    • Paradox says:

There’s an idiot in the room

    • XanthanGum says:

I guess when we’ll be the ones getting hit by a nasty hurricane, then it’s our problem, and we shouldn’t expect anyone to come lend a helping hand… it’s sad how callused we’ve become…

  6. bermyguy says:

    *waste

  7. Im just being honest . not future though says:

Ok I understand helping the Philippine community is good but what about our own? I see people in the city of Hamilton sleeping on benches and side walks and its not just Hamilton its all over the island and no one wants to help them out, but as soon as something happens overseas we throw out our support real fast but yet we can support our own? GET IT TOGETHER BERMUDA! . . . helping is a beautiful thing but we need to take care of our own first !

    • Berms says:

Well, the ppl that are sleeping on the streets aren’t there because a giant wave moved them there buddy.. They made poor life choices, and yes that’s unfortunate, but I’m pretty sure they’re not a greater cause than this

      • ummm says:

Sorry to bust you bubble buddy but not ALL of them are there because of bad decisions some have fallen victim to our job and financial crisis..

  8. aceboy says:

No problem with a donation and aid to Haiti though…um hmmm?

  9. Mike Hind says:

Proud to be Bermudian when I read this. Times are tough for us, sure, but we still give to those that desperately need it.

  10. Michelle says:

You people are SICK! Just IMAGINE if, God forbid, this happened to Bermuda. We would appreciate every dollar that other countries would give us. Despite the problems that Bermuda has, we are NO WHERE near as bad as the Philippines- and that’s even BEFORE this horrible storm hit.

I think that what the OBA is doing is highly commendable. Do unto others people!! And seriously put yourself in the shoes of those suffering to recover right now.. There world has literally been flipped upside down.

I’m SO ashamed of how some of you are dealing with this… honestly! It’s disgusting….

I don’t think any of understand the magnitude of the damage that has been done in the Philippines.

    GOOD JOB OBA.

    • She Has Crazy Eyes... says:

Are we broke or are we not? We keep hearing we don’t have money for this or that, the infrastructure of the country is falling apart and yet at the drop of the hat we pledge $50k in aid when countries a lot bigger and more well ff than us haven’t pledged a cent yet. Where is this $50k coming from?

Yes, the Filipino people are suffering right down but I don’t think it’s selfish to question this pledge. It may be hard for some of you to fathom, but we have people suffering right in this beautiful little country as well. A friend showed me a BB recently where a young mother she knew sent out an appeal for two slices of bread to fix her child’s lunch as she had NOTHING for that child! We have Bermudians who are homeless, sleeping in cars or bunking down on friends’ couches if they get lucky. There are still Bermudians sleeping in tents in bushes or in caves…not just worthless men who choose that life but families with children in tow!

There are Bermudians with hunger in their bellies right now! They don’t know where their next meal will come from! What about all the kids being sent to school hungry?! If agencies asked Gov’t for help for a feeding program, Gov’t would quickly say they don’t have the funds yet can find $50k at the drop of a hat? I don’t get it.

Again, my heart feels for the Filipino people but it really makes my blood boil that Gov’t can’t take care of its own yet is so quick to help someone else. It just boggles my mind!

      • Berms says:

But there are programs in place to help people who are suffering! It’s not like there is absolutely nothing here!
if you know of someone who is struggling that much to feed their children, they should go to St. Theresas every Sunday night and get a delicious free meal.
And they can speak to the people there and arrange for other food to be provided.

Each Christmas, Marketplace fills bins and bins of non perishables for those in need.

We have programmes in place so that this doesn’t happen. You just need to find them.

  11. Lets Keep it Real says:

    This is ridiculous.
Philippines have people around the world. Doctors, nurses, engineers etc. They are always being imported around the world as a labor force. Our little drop in the bucket does not do anything to help us in international relations and it does not relieve suffering in this country. WE CANT AFFORD IT!!!!!! WE don’t have to be apart of everything that goes on. We are not the BErmuda we used to be. WE are helping the philippines by taking their workers here in Bermuda. i am not stingy but i am hungry and 50,000 dollars can feed a lot of Bermudians. It will do further here than over there. THIS IS NOT A JOKE! Premier Craig is eating well we need to hold him accountable for OUR MONEY!!!! It is not PRemier CRAIG’S money. STOP SHOWING OFF! Feed your own people.

    • Berms says:

You don’t think 50k will help them? Do you have any concept of money? EVERY LITTLE BIT WILL HELP.

      • She Has Crazy Eyes... says:

@Berms: Just how far do you think $50k will go over there when you look at the situation in its entirety? Then you accuse others of having no concept of money? Is this donation all for show or what? It seems to be! Bermudians are desperate and in need of help, too…the problem is that people like you haven’t come across any of them.

I think what people like me have a problem with the most is the suddenness in which Gov’t has pledged money. They’d have us believe the coffers are empty with practically every cent accounted for and none to spare, with the way they talk! If this was a local in need, we’d hear the crickets chirping with the silence from Gov’t.

The crazy thing is that the Filipino people will rebuild in the same areas only for another storm to come and destroy it again. Isn’t it time to learn lessons from this and rebuild somewhere else???

    • Um Um Like says:

“WE are helping the philippines by taking their workers here in Bermuda.”

Just remember all of the Filipino doctors and nurses that will take care of you when someone beats the s*** out of you for saying something like that. Maybe then you’ll realize who is helping who.

We’re talking about a mere ~75 cents per resident of Bermuda! Get over it!

      • Lets Keep it Real says:

You are a real Jacakasas! OK. You think so little of bermudians. Don’t you read about the violence in the Philipines. Philipinos are wonderful workers that is not the issue. The issue is that we need the money here. That is the point…idiot!

        • Bermuda says:

So, you’re essentially saying that because the Philippines is a “violent” country, we should not donate? Please name me a country that doesn’t have episodes of violence in the news.

    • media says:

It is worth around 10 times more in that region of the Philippines. So around $500,000. It will go a long way there.

  12. hmm says:

Sorry but this whole story pissed me off! what about the BERMUDIANS in BERMUDA that are suffering. come on mann

    • Sandy Bottom says:

I’ve rarely seen such selfish and heartless comments. I’m frankly ashamed of you. I hope I never encounter such a selfish jerk again.

      • Frodo says:

@Sandy: It is not selfish at all! I’m ashamed of people like you who don’t give two hoots about your fellow Bermudian. There are some Bermudians with their heads seriously buried in the sand as to the true conditions of how bad things are here for some of us. You have food to eat and a roof over your head so naturally you can sit on your high horse and accuse the next person of being heartless.

What are YOU doing to help your fellow man right here in Bermuda? Nothing, I’ll bet.

        • Mike Hind says:

How does supporting charity for people in desperate need equate to “don’t give two hoots about your fellow Bermudian”?

          I don’t understand.

        • Sandy Bottom says:

I’m doing a lot more than you, I’ll bet. Not that it’s relevant.

It’s amazing. For a country that calls itself Christian the selfish jerks sure come out if the woodwork at times.

          • Lets Keep it Real says:

Chirsitan…when did you every represent that as an idea! You have always blogged from a racist world view and anti-black bermudian philosophy..you don’t have credibility!

            • Sandy Bottom says:

Can you point to any posts where I’m supposedly racist and anti – black Bermudian?

My mixed-race family is having a good laugh at you right now. But anyway, give me some examples of where I’m racist.

Not that it has anything to do with the subject of helping people after a disaster.

              • Suzie Quattro says:

It’s the last refuge when there is no other argument. Call the other person a racist. Then, when asked for some evidence of that allegation, disappear.

  13. Chris Famous says:

I don’t Support the OBA. But I support this effort.

    We are our Brothers keepers.

I personally will be donating to help and I encourage other Bermudians to do so also. If a military transport could be arranged I would support elements of the Bermuda Regiment assisting.

Lets Put aside petty remarks in these times and do something for others. It will come back to us in spades.

Goes to show you the very people you despise because of political affiliation are no different then you.

        • campervan says:

Not at all Mazumbo. I am not tied to party.
I do have an issue with Chris using expatriates as his own political football though.

    • Shari-Lynn Pringle says:

Cousin, it is not unnoticed that many of the totally sane comments have come from people willing to use their own name. I co-sign your comments (except a slight correction, I support the OBA). I remember how the country pulled together to help Haiti and this is no different. We have been so blessed as a country in our precarious position in the Atlantic and we truly do not need jinx our good fortune.

      For reference: http://bernews.com/2010/03/dr-brown-presents-personal-check-for-haiti-relief/

      Bless us all.

  14. Concerned says:

we had a Fabian (I think it was) HMS had a ship come in to assist us and the then government turned them away – many persons were extremely upset – could that have helped with the overwhelming win of the OBA in 2012….. you never know when our turn will come and who will come to our aid – be af riend to the homeless, help to the weak, give love to the widow/widower and feed the hungry and assist the poor.

  15. Hmmmmm says:

    What Is the Current Situation?
An outbreak of cholera has been ongoing in Haiti since October 2010. As of October 17, 2013, 684,085 cases and 8,361 deaths have been reported since the cholera epidemic began in Haiti. Among the cases reported, 380,846 (55.4%) were hospitalized. Cases have been officially reported in all 10 departments of Haiti.

Anything for them ? Just askin..

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Bermudians donated over $1.5m for Haiti after the earthquake.

      • Yes and when I was sending a donation there by a friend going to Haiti, he told me to hold on to my money cause he himself wasn’t sure if he’d even give the money to the govt or those in need. Damn shame if you ask me..

  16. Hmmmmm says:

maybe a little something for them too? Just askin…

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United Nations says more than 100 people are feared dead after a rare tropical cyclone hit northern Somalia.

The U.N. said in a statement Tuesday that hundreds more are unaccounted for after heavy rains lashed the northern region of Puntland on Sunday. Communication lines and road access have been severed, hampering the verification of information and delivery of assistance.

Puntland authorities have declared an emergency and asked for aid. Puntland’s president originally estimated the death toll at 100. Puntland authorities have increased that estimate to 300.

The U.N. says that according to government estimates, 30,000 people are in need of food, water, shelter and medical supplies. The U.N. estimated that the northern Somali coast got as much rainfall during the storm as in all of 2012 in some areas.

  18. Handbag Basher says:

Nearly all of us here in Bermuda have somewhere to sleep tonight.

Anyone can get a Meal here in Bermuda for NOTHING everyday, the Salvation Army Officers will tell you where to go or feed you.

Anyone can get a Free Wash here everyday.

Anyone can Free clothes here .

so to all you MOANERS and GROANERS….STFU!

    • Frodo says:

@Handbag Basher: Are you living on another planet or what? People like you are only aware of what you see. Out of sight, out of mind. There are MANY Bermudians with NOWHERE to sleep tonight so speak for yourself!

Since you know so much, provide us with a list of places besides Salvation Army where one can get a meal, free showers and free clothing? Yes, there are many organizations that help but please give us a complete list for our perusal since there seems to be an abundance of places where one can get these things, according to you.

      • Mike Hind says:

        Why “besides Salvation Army”?

And why does an anonymous poster have to provide this information, as opposed to… you know… going out and finding it for yourself.

Or are you calling him a liar and saying that there AREN’T places where folks can get a helping hand?

        • M.A. says:

Mike Hind, Frodo is asking a valid question. Since Handbag Basher knows of so many helping places, why can’t they back up their claims and name them? The reason why they DON’T is because they CAN’T, and you know that too! Frodo isn’t in need of these places, they are asking a legitimate question so why should they look it up? You know full well that Handbag Basher’s claim is full of baloney!!! If I was to walk into financial assistance today and say I had no place to sleep and you food, do you really think they would instantly cut me a check? Of course not!!! I would have to go through certain procedures, the government doesn’t just hand out cash like an ATM. Yet they can instantly pledge 50k when we have starving Bermudians, and people like you that have no sympathy because you feel they are in their position because of their own poor decisions.
BTW, don’t get me wrong, I am sorry for the people that are suffering in the Phillipines. However, if my own children are starving, am I going to take what little food is in my cupboard and feed the neighbour’s feeding children before my own? THINK ABOUT IT!!!

          • M.A. says:

            *neighbour’s starving children

          • Frodo says:

Excellent point with the last two lines, M.A. Everyone knows Mike Hind is a troll who likes to stir things up just for the sake of it.

Mike, I don’t need help but I’m asking a valid question. I’d like to know which organizations assist with these things. I’d like a specific list and not generalizations.

            • Handbag Basher says:

go to the nearest Salvation Army Officer and ask the same questions!
              you will soon find out.
Frankly,I KNOW what I’m saying is correct…you are just being an @$$hole!

            • Mike Hind says:

Interesting that you start with a personal attack. No, I’m not a troll. You might want to look up that word to see what it means.
Why so angry about a story of someone doing something good?
And why isn’t the Salvation Army enough?
And are you honestly saying that there are NO other resources that you know about?
And is an anonymous poster on a news site really the best resource for the information you’re looking for?

      • Handbag Basher says:

Since you know so much, provide us with a list of places besides Salvation Army where one can get a meal, free showers and free clothing? Yes, there are many organizations that help

seems to me you already KNOW the answer to your question!

These are the headlines taken from the Daily Mail today. Imagine the chaos if this happened to Bermuda.

    Water pipes being dug up by people dying of thirst;
    Starving looters crushed in warehouse stampede;
aid convoys being attacked by gunmen.

Don’t tell me that Bermuda needs the money more. To those that begrudge this aid, just close your eyes for a minute and imagine yourself in that position then thank god and your luck in being born/living Bermuda that you are not on the other side of the world suffering the same problems as these people.

There but for the grace of god go I…..

Let’s hope that one day you do not suffer the same fate. Read the article and put yourself in their position then think how bloody lucky you are.

    • If ‘gawd’ was so into this why de hell did ‘he’ allow this catastrophe to happen in the first place.???Maybe you need a lil more grace going on up in here.

Great news Bermuda – this lifts my sprit. I am truly shocked and saddened by some of the begrudging attitudes to giving in the comments here. This “all about me” attitude really makes Bermuda unattractive. With less “all about me” prevailing, we could probably increase our tourism dollars by ten times the 50,000 donated.

Would you like the UK to add that extra 50 grand to the tab of millions that they are already sending to help with the devastation.
Would some of ya stop whining and throwing your toys around then?

What an array of tiresome tribal inward thinking selfish back country attitudes. SMH.

Since I don’t fall into any of those stereotypical categories you have named, what the UK does or does not take is of no importance to me. What does that even have to do with anything?

      • campervan says:

Its not about “you” and what is important to ‘you” M.A.
Thankfully there has been a watershed of positive comments posted.
Faith in the generous Bermudian spirit has been restored and “You” have been drowned out with kindness and concern.

  25. Tolerate says:

Never been so proud and ashamed at one time. Bermudians becoming so nasty. Shows exactly the issues we are having here at home. Mr. Famous could not have said it any better.

  26. Landlubber says:

I have mixed feelings about this. I have so much pity for the Filipino people and the situation is really becoming dire. We should do all we can to help. However, I agree with those who made posts about the way Government seems to have just pulled this money from a hat. There have been Bermudians in dire straights as well with NO help from Government.

What I have a big problem with, and what many Bermudians are unaware of, is that we have sick kids in Bermuda who need medical treatment for ailments like cancer who cannot afford treatment as their parents have no insurance. Where is Government then?

I know of a handicapped child who is in the foster care system who needs urgent medical care overseas yet cannot go-the foster mom has been told that Government cannot afford to send this child for treatment that would cost in the region of 6-10,000 dollars. Why can’t Government help this poor child as well?

If adults don’t have insurance and can’t afford major medical treatment it’s one thing, but when you have innocent kids who have to do without treatment it bothers me. I know what I’m talking about because I work for a charity myself. We have sick and disabled children right here in this country who cannot get medical care because Government says they do not have the funds-yet we can jump to the rescue of others? These kids are in a life or death situation yet Government sits by and does nothing. That is the TRUTH of the matter but something most Bermudians will know nothing about! Like someone else said here, if my children were starving would I take what little food in my cupboards to feed my neighbour’s children instead of my own? Of course not! If Government wants to help others, fine-I have no problem with that…as long as they are willing to help our won as well! THAT is what people have an issue with!

  27. media says:

The dire situation in the Philippines cannot be compared to Bermuda’s current problems, for which there are agencies to help anyone in desperate need. In the Philippines it is becoming a life or death situation as hundreds of thousands of people have had no access to any food for days, no shelter and no possessions. It is a desperate time and I thank the Bermuda Government and all those who have donated money so far to the cause. The total already stands at over $100,000 and will continue to rise over the coming weeks.

The Association of Filipinos in Bermuda will be holding two more Fundraising Events for victims of the Typhoon, the first one being a Thanksgiving Dinner followed by a Christmas Fundraiser. Go to the AFB Facebook page for information over the coming weeks. Everyone is welcome to attend. Moneys raised will go directly to those most in need. The overwhelming need being food.

Ooh no dats a fact need to help there own before helpin others end of CONVO

    • media says:

If the PLP was still in power do you think they would have donated money? I imagine they would have because it is the right thing to do.

      • Indepedent says:

        # media, and anyone else who thinks people who don’t agree with them are wrong. For the record, if the PLP was in, I would say the same thing.

Let’s go back to the pre-election talk of being broke, then a month or so ago Mr. Bob Richards said when the OBA took office, they were not going to able to make payroll, and would have to borrow money from wall street, or wherever.

Now let’s move to the present, can someone please explain to me how giving money to others makes sense, when Bermuda is in the current state that we have been led to believe?

When Bermuda gets on it’s feet, I would be in full support, but I cannot support this knowing how people need help right here.

  31. tricks are for kids.... says:

This is probably a topic that we will never all agree on….I can understand the views on both sides BUT more importantly I can RESPECT the opinions of others something which is not shown by many based on the comments above.

While it is the kind and humanitarian thing to do to help those in need one should be able to also understand the dismay and anger expressed by others because we have been constantly told by our Government that THERE IS NO MONEY……so yes, we should be able to exclaim where this money is coming from….with job loses and most recently paycuts I can thorughly see where people are coming from…..How can you take money from people to supposedly pay the Islands Debt but than turn around and GIVE away $50,000.00 that’s like a slap in the face to those that are currently sacrificing pay in good faith.

I am all for helping people don’t get me wrong but I feel that yes we should help our own FIRST…..whilst the people in the Philippines may be suffering there are people here that are suffering as well. Whilst it may not be the SAME degree of suffering it is still sufferring never the less…..There are people here that are going hungry as well…that have no electricity or running water either so what happens to them…and for those that said it above not EVERYONE has a roof over their head either….the situation is real and while our hardships may not have come as a result of mother nature they EXIST and we as a Country that is supposedly got it together should rally around and help their fellow country men…It’s not a matter of being spoiled or feeling entitled…It is what it is…..

  32. Mike Hind says:

    Here”s the thing…

We ARE broke, and in debt, but it’s on a scale much larger than $50,000.
A comparison would be the all too familiar situation many find ourselves in right now, where we are very low on funds and have bills due, but still give $5 to a tag day, ‘cuz it’s the right thing to do.

  33. juana change says:

    Hello.

I also appreciate the negative comments on this article and do feel your sentiments.

  34. This is like coins in a WET PAPER BAG. How often does the money sent go to the right places, people or cause. Too often it goes into the pockets of the governments, workers and the rest of the thieves. Even sending supplies don’t get to the right people.

Help when you know it will go to the correct people/cause.

Keep the money where it is needed most, in your pocket so that when the times arises you can help out families that are looking to provide just a few gifts for their children at Xmas.

Let those churches that can afford it send a few volunteers over there to help help, relocate and find people in distress. The Ministers can afford to give up a Sunday/Saturday offering/tithe that will go to a good cause. But REMEMBER to save some for our OWN families for Xmas
