Dr. Brown Presents Personal Check for Haiti Relief

March 24, 2010

from wiki Ewart_BrownOn March 8th, Bermuda hosted a telethon to assist earthquake ravaged Haiti entitled “To Haiti with Love”, during which the Premier pledged to match the donations of civil servants.

Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and his wife Wanda Henton-Brown, generously matched the $6,000 donations made by civil servants, with Dr. Brown calling into the telethon from the House of Assembly. Politics aside, one must admire this personal gesture of support for the people of Haiti.

Today, the Premier presented the check to Major Kenneth Dill, Head of the Civil Service and Chairman of the “To Haiti With Love” organising committee.

Premier Brown said:

My wife and I watched the telethon that evening and were genuinely touched by the outpouring from the public. Bermudians truly showed that they are a giving people and Wanda and I wanted very much to participate in this worthwhile cause.

The Civil Service rose to the occasion in donating $6,000 to Haiti, and we thought it only fitting that we match that donation.

The telethon raised $82,372.00 by the end, and went on to raise over $100,000 to date. Much of the money raised was from very impressive efforts from Bermuda’s school students who held school grub days, bake sales, car washed, gave up birthday parties and more.
