[Updated] Four people were arrested following an incident on the Bermuda College campus just before noon today [Dec 10], which saw an altercation break out between a few students who were on campus sitting their GED examination.
Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “The Bermuda Police Service were called to the Bermuda College Campus after reports of an affray that took place.
“Four persons were taken into police custody and they were taken to Hamilton Police Station, and activities at the school resumed when police left the scene.”
Update 1.22pm: A Bermuda College spokesperson said, “Just before noon today, an altercation broke out between a few non-Bermuda College students who were on campus sitting their General Education Diploma [GED] examination. Bermuda College serves as a testing centre for the GED.
“Police were already on campus from 8 this morning as a proactive precaution to assist in security patrols at Brock Hall where the students sat the exam. Three persons were arrested as a result.
“Bermuda College students were completing their own finals, and were not involved nor endangered as a result of the altercation.
“The College is grateful for the presence and quick response of the police and College security officers.”
Update 4.01pm: The police said the four people arrested were all males aged 17 or 18 years old, and added that “Initial information does not suggest that this dispute was gang related; however that possibility cannot be ruled out.”
The full police statement is below:
Around 11:55am on Tuesday, December 10th police officers responded to a dispute at the Bermuda College campus in Paget.
Details remain unclear at this time; however it appears that the dispute occurred between persons attending that location for GED examinations.
Two 17 year old Sandys parish males and two 18 year old Warwick males were arrested in connection with this incident. They remain in police custody pending further inquiries.
Initial information does not suggest that this dispute was gang related; however that possibility cannot be ruled out.
Any witnesses are encouraged to contact the main police telephone number on 295-0011.
GED candidates? no wonder….
In a way you have a point Swing.
But that does not take away from the higher percentage that are really trying to improve their education to better themselves.
Shalom.
@swing voter….what does your comment imply? Sorry not everyone can have a master’s degree like yourself!! I take great offense to that statement!
Grizz you took the words right out of my mouth. That comment was out of order. What’s wrong with obtaining a GED. Something is better than nothing. Smh.
the f*** does that mean ALOT of people productive people in society have GED’s!!
people productive people ……….. classic
In grammar it’s called an Appositive repetition of a noun for the sake of clarity and emphasis. A good example would be “People like Barracuda are morons, infantile morons”. Just an example no offense intended.
So let me get this right ya looking down on them for taking the steps to further their education?
This comment says a lot about you swing voter. As someone fortunate to receive higher education myself, I’m saddened at your disparagement of those beginning their journey. It seems you need an education in humility if there ever were such a thing for snobs.
Swing says a lot too let them enjoy themselves..
So all de students that committed murder on U.S. campuses were uneducated? I don’t think so, you got another angle? LMAO
Always the outsiders.
Go figure.
Waffless!
Children go to school and learn well
Otherwise later on in life you will catch real hell.
Non-Bermuda college students sitting GED exams and fights breaking out hmmmmm… Tells you maybe Bermuda wasn’t ready for that new law they passed…
Can you elaborate? I need to confirm that you are a snob first before calling you one. Wouldn’t happen to be casting a wide negative net on people who studied and came to sit an examination would you?
they wanna ruin their futures by fighting and getting in trouble with the man then let them, why waste (someone else’s) money on education when these youths act as ignorant as they do.. grow up.
Punks!…toss them out on their ear, screw their GED,they are not ready for it…whip their a** and send them back to infant school.
Haha I’m actually surprised at the fact there was a planned police presence specifically for the examination…wtf were they anticipating?
I have NEVER seen a officer at the campus in the past 2 years I’ve been there
All four students arrested, either dropped out or where kicked out of high school. Just a bit of food for thought. Kudos for them trying to get their GED, unfortunate that this occurred whilst these boys were trying to better themselves.
@Come Correct – unfortunately the fact remains that some of those studying for GEDs are involved/affiliated with the anti-social behaviours that are occurring on the island. The fact is that Bermuda College is a central examination centre drawing people from all parishes. As everyone knows some of our young men cannot be in the same place/ certain parishes so being security minded was probably a smart move.
For those who are disparaging the people who are striving to better themselves by educating themselves in the hopes of improving their lives, be ashamed of yourselves !
People from all walks of life get their GEDs. Traditional schooling does not work for everyone. Likewise life can get in the way of the best of intentions. The fact that people are working to get ahead, in spite of possible odds others know nothing about, is not a reason to act superior. Rather it is a reason to commend them. The only way forward in this life is to educate yourself.
Good luck to all who sat their exams. May it be the beginning of the next phase of your lives.
I think it is quite unfortunate that these individuals did not consider their options before their actions. So… What will you do now? Go to prison to get your GED? SMH!
Congrats to all students who sat the GED exam, and may you excel in your future endeavors. – whether pursuing further higher education or entering the work-force.
There are very successful and well-respected persons who have either obtained their GED’s, and now have their PhD (and all degrees in between), or have dropped out of high school.
Good for all of you for taking the first step….
Does this give others too a new understanding of what Higher Education means to some students?
