Results: 5th Budo Cup Kumite Championships
The 5th Budo Cup Kumite Championships were held recently at the Somersfield Academy Gymnasium. Reuben Bean, President of Jiketsu Martial Productions hailed the tournament a huge success.
“I am extremely pleased with the overall management and success of the 5th Budo Cup Kumite Championships,” said Mr Bean.
“Consistent with our philosophy, we aim to set the standard by providing quality events that afford the opportunity for our young athletes to develop and hone their skill-sets at a very high World Karate Federation standard.
“To this end, I am pleased that we completed this phase of our development and accomplished our goals on Sunday.”
A crowd of over 100 cheered on the 25 participants ranging in age from 5-11 in six divisions.
The Children Male 5 year category saw Nico Bean battle for Gold with Gonosuke Harigai taking Silver and Dylan Pickering claming Bronze .
The Children Male 6 year category was highly contested with 2012 silver medalist Christian Warren dominating the division taking Gold with 2012 gold medalist Khari Sharrieff settled for Silver, while DaMarli Minors captured Bronze . Josiah Eve rounded out the category.
In the Children Male 7-8 Division, David McDonald emerged victorious this year claiming Gold in a very exciting group by narrowly beating Silver medalist Tyler Furtado in the finals. In the battle for third place, Kauai Evans got past Preston Dowling to earn the Bronze medal. Ayden Gardener and Thomas Attridge displayed great heart and determination to round out the group.
The Children Male 9-10 Division was hotly contested with five talented warriors battling, with 2010-2011 Champion Trey Vance narrowly edging out 2012 Champion Ravi Watson to win the Gold this year and reclaim the 2013 Division Championship Title. J’Kai Berkeley and Quayan Watson battled with Berkeley claiming the Bronze . Milo DaSilveira rounded out the group.
In the Children Male 11-13 Division, 2012 silver medalist William Attridge reclaimed his title, but not without being tested by a very skilled newcomer J.P. Didyk, who was pleased with his Silver medal winning performance.
In the Children Male Open Division William Attridge claimed his second Gold Medal of the tournament with Tyler Furtado claiming his second Silver Medal. Christiana Warren [7-8 Female and 2012 Female Open Gold Medalist] stole the Bronze with convincing skill and technique. Thomas Attridge, Ravi Watson, Kauai Evans and Ayden Gardener rounded out this exciting division.
In the Children Female 5-6 Division, Maya DaSilveira conquered all to take the Gold with Shantia Berkeley taking the Silver Medal.

An exhibition match between brothers Tyler [3yrs.] and Dylan Pickering [5 yrs.] thrilled all in attendance – simply having the confidence and determination to enter the tatami, and experience the ‘energy’ within themselves and the tournament environment in front of so many, was more than commendable indeed!
“Competing in a tournament such as this gives the participants so much more than a medal at the end of the day,” saidMr Bean. “By competing, they have the opportunity to execute teamwork, strategy, sportsmanship, humility and patience while gaining significant self-confidence [mental & emotional enhancement] by facing their fears inside and out of the tatami [mat].”
“We are excited to see the commitment of these young Karateka [a practitioner of Karate] and we anticipate the continued structured enhancement of our young athletes as we approach the 2014 6th Budo Cup Kumite Championships, extending invitations to WKF Karateka from around the globe.”
