Woman Pleads Guilty To Stealing Perfume

December 12, 2013

Desire Scraders, 49, pleaded guilty in Magistrates Court yesterday [Dec 11] to stealing two packages of fragrance worth $135 from Brown & Co on 9th October 2013.

New Crown Counsel Loxly Ricketts told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that shop staff knew Ms Scraders as a ‘person of interest’ and had taken special care to watch her after she had entered Brown & Co’s Front Street store.

Staff had seen her pick up two packets and place them in her handbag. Managers had been called and they had sought to look into her handbag. Managers asked Ms Scraders to go up to the ‘office’ for an interview. Along the way she was seen to remove two items from her handbag and place them on a glass shelf.

Ms Scraders sought to exit Brown & Co but she was kept from doing so by shop staff. Police were called and they took over.

This morning, Duty Counsel Saul Dismont told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that Ms Scraders as an outpatient at MAWI, was on probation, and was a suitable candidate for Drug Court.

The Magistrate checked with Probation Services and confirmed that Ms Scraders was working with Probation Services. The Magistrate then accepted Probation Service’s recommendation that Ms Scraders should be assigned to Court Three. The Magistrate ordered that Ms Scraders should appear in Court Three on Wednesday 12th December 2013.
