25 Year Old Woman Admits Theft, Denies Assault

January 29, 2014

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Jan 29] a 25 year woman was remanded in custody after admitting stealing a can of soda and bag of chips from a St David’s store, while denying additional charges involving assaulting a police officer.

Ms Tendora Steede pleaded guilty to stealing a can of ginger-ale and a bag of chips valued at $3.90 from St David’s Variety Store on 27th January 2014. Sges remanded into custody until a trial and sentencing on 12th February.

Ms Steede also pleaded not guilty to, on the same date, violently resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Finally she pleaded not guilty to using threatening words by telling the police officers who were attempting to arrest her that, “I will get men to kill you. You don’t know who you are dealing with”.

In relation to the first charge of stealing, Crown Prosecutor Nicole Smith told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that around 11:15am on 27th January, Ms Steede was seen by shop staff to put the ginger-ale and chips in her bag. S

She then left the store without paying. Police were called and quickly found Ms Steede sitting on the nearby St David’s Dock with the partly consumed can of ginger-ale and an empty chip bag.

Ms Steede allegedly refused to cooperate with police. The after a struggle in which a policeman was allegedly kicked on the shins and struck in his chest, Ms Steede was bundled into a police car. In the police car she allegedly threatened to spit on the police constables and allegedly spit on the floor of the vehicle.

On 28th January, police interviewed her and she admitted stealing the soda and chips.

Questioned by the Magistrate, Ms Steede said that she lived at the Gulfstream Transitional Living Centre and had no job. Citing her several previous confrontations with police, the Senior Magistrate remanded her into custody until trial on the three counts, and sentencing on the first, on 12th February.

Throughout, Ms Steede chose to speak for herself and spurned the free legal advice and services offered by Duty Counsel.

The struggle is real but that is just dumb a bag a chips and soda! I can understand if it was bread, milk, or eggs or something like that! Seriously i dont feel sorry for her at all!

  5. Islanders says:

Put the Warrior colors on the building that should keep them respectful of our Community – young disrespectful up starts

  6. Lemon Tree says:

Im not sure what you mean by your comment Mark. St Davids USED to be a very safe area where everyone respected each other and watched out for one another. I grew up there and we never had to lock our doors.
That changed dramatically when Southside was opened up to accomodate those that find themselves in a predicament.

    • Come Correct says:

Hate to break it to you but Bermuda used to be just like you describe. Many different factors have changed that. Sad really.

      • Andrew says:

        and that is the truth!

      • down to earth says:

St Davids was the last of the old Bermuda. old Bermuda want come back unless we get rid of this me me me matality that we had fed into us from out siders and Cable. males can not bring back old Bermuda it all up to the female what ever the female do man will follow. we need the females to say srew all the flash garbage and hype. men can not live with out females.

  7. leo says:

  8. Miguelito says:

Lock her up and let her stay there. Please.

  9. bunchofarseholes says:

What a dumb ,nasty “woman”. Disgrace

  10. jahbless says:

More tax dollars being wasted detaining this woman

    • markus says:

you want to let her stay at your place instead? Make sure to hide all your snacks beforehand!

  11. Get it right says:

Not from St.Davids but leave the people alone. This individual isn’t even from St.Davids. She’s from the town area. Yes it’s extremely sad she has chosen to live her life this way.

    • Raymond Ray says:

The operative word would be, “chose”. Of course times are difficult for many but, many wrongs can be avoided by simply making the right choice.

  12. The Struggle is Real says:

She could have asked me for $5 dollars and I would have probally gave it to her . lol

  13. jess says:

i bet yu none the people commenting bad kno the girl or her real situation….yu shuld never judge a book by its cover…she could have been starving…she obviously didnt have no money cuz $3.90 is nothing to a person working… she needs more help than counseling she needs help finding a job …its sad bermuda everybody has a comment but whos actually going out and taking the time to help her

    • Hmmm says:

Her attitude and ALLEGED disrespect for the police, who are just people striving to survive and pay their bills by doing their job was disgusting.
She is the maker of her own bed, like I am the maker of mine.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

I’d say she has to start – by trying to HELP herself first!! She just seems to want to cause problems and do her own thing!! She obviously has NO respect for the police!!

    • 'nuff sa-d' says:

I’m sure that if she is living in an assisted living facility that they do feed her so there is no reason under the sun for her to steal food. And the alleged disrespect for the BPS is uncalled for.

Locking her up is a waste of Tax money. Leave her out and make her do community service.. Like Clean the area around the St David’s Store that she stole from with a T shirt on that says “I’m a thief” on her lunch breaks. She needs to get a job first. Lock her up, Nooooo!

  14. You don't know her says:

    She has quite severe issues.

Her eating patterns (if she eats anything at all for days)…are not what most people would want to be for a meal

This girl does not deserve CoEd…she deserves some HELP and ASSISTANCE

Honestly…she does. I hope Mr Warner sends her there for help

  15. ally says:

Some terrible spelling and grammar on here,

  16. Kathy S. says:

Jess I agree but then some of these folk don’t want to be helped. Just yesterday I gave a way 10 dollars not that i could afford to but 2 separate folks was hungry. And the Male needed batteries for his flashlight had 3 dollars already. Lady wanted a piece of chicken. The struggle is very hard and people are just not that concerned with helping anymore.

  17. MAKE MY DAY says:

Trouble is it costs a lot of $$$ to keep her in jail… But, she has had several previous confrontations with police – so what is the “court system” supposed to do?? It’s a “catch 22″ situation!!

  18. buzz says:

funny story in many ways, one who gets remanded in Custody,
the fact that people from St. Davids think that they are
separate when something negative happens down there, and
how we as Bermudians Claim to Care about each other when
we could not give a Rats Arse, I wonder how many people
would go out of their way to help a fellow (Human Being)

  19. bdaDread says:

ay buh you cant let the struggle struggle you. sh**s real out hea!gotta do what ya gotta do. If you cant help yourself, then who will? especially on this island!its all about favoritism on this island

  20. BerNewsViewer says:

OK so how much are we paying in taxes to have her remanded in prison for stealing $3.90….? Really….. OMG….. $500 Bail and suspension of a passport would have been so much more appropriate (I mean it’s highly unlikely she would have skipped the island). Damn who makes this stuff up??????

Jail time for a bag of chips — ONLY IN BERMUDA. And why is the island still in a 6 year recession???????

    • X man says:

The Judicial system ,and Govt. has yet to figure out that it cost a bundle of money to send
people to jail for stupid things — not worth going to jail for

  21. Really NOT smart says:

Not a smart girl at all.

    No Business skills at all.
There are things she could lease to make a lot more than $4.
25 years old… wow she could be making loot if she knows how to work it like a Boss.

  22. Take a Closer Look says:

SMH You all that have something negative to say should reflect and recognize how negative and judgmental you are. What does saying these negative things do for you? Your not actually helping this individual or society for that matter.
I know this individual on a personal level. I know she is educated, has a master’s degrees might I add. However, in the last few years something has happen; drugs …. her mental state has definitely change recently. How could you say things like “she’s a nasty women” and statements like she did this to herself. Your just an outsider all you know is that she stole and allegedly resisted arrested you don’t know anything else about her so how can you make a statement regarding ‘how a person is’ based on a few occurrences. Obviously this is abnormal behavior that requires a closer look. Don’t be so quick to cast people away, judge, or blame them. Life isn’t an easy journey and not all are able to handle it as well as others.

I’m not say she isn’t guilty or condoning what she did, by no means, the people she stole from do not deserve that. But just take a closer look at the reality of the situation. And if you dnt have anything positive to offer. Go get a journal and write your negative comments there, not just in this case but those of you who are regulars at highlighting the negative, write all your negative comments, and look back at it and think about what type of person YOU reaaaallly are.

*Most times its something deeper going on*

  23. east_end_fisherman says:

So we all need to know her and have empathy for her ignorance while shes lost in a world of drugs huh? I think not! I don’t normally waste my time with this crap but its rant time. Problem with the world these days is people are soft. I’m so tired of hearing “he/she needs help….its not their fault.” Well listen up….its 100% their fault that they get into their predicaments and if you cant do the time then don’t do the crime.
If people would start holding their brothers, sisters, cousins, neighbors ACCOUNTABLE for their actions then things would change. Until we stop giving people free passes on their F-ups in life you will never see change. Neither race nor creed nor sexuality has anything to do with it. She stole and allegedly resisted arrest. Point blank she needs to go to jail. Quit being soft Bermuda.
