Government Partners For Caribbean Flood Relief
As an Associate Member of CARICOM, the Bermuda Government said they are “proud to support the efforts” of the West Indian Association of Bermuda in raising funds to help Caribbean victims, by hosting a Denim Day on February 14th.
The Denim Day will involve the Civil/Public Service and the Island’s public schools.
On December 24th, 2013, a low-level, high impact trough system passed through the Eastern Caribbean region, dumping enormous quantities of rain over parts of Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and continued during Christmas day.
Over 33,000 people were affected by the torrential downpour and 15 lives were lost in addition to livelihoods, homes and vital infrastructure.
Additionally, the West Indian Association will be hosting the “Give from the Heart – Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party” on Saturday February 15th at the Police Recreation Club. This event is another in a series designed to raise funds to assist those Caribbean Islands affected.
As the Chair of the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO], the Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley said today, “The goal is to get the funds to the agencies who are directly assisting those in need.
“So the Bermuda Government’s Valentine’s Denim Day fundraiser would be in support of the victims of Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We tend to take for granted how fortunate we are here in Bermuda, but Mother Nature is indiscriminate and disaster can strike at any time; so as an Associate Member of CARICOM, we are pleased to do whatever we can to help our friends and neighbours to our south.”
Minimum contributions of $5 for adults and $2 for students are encouraged and donations can be made directly to the West Indian Association of Bermuda through the special relief fund HSBC Account No: 011 055 662 001.

I thought woban and the plp had this all under controll??? Woban announced he was organizing the relief effort, as I and a few others stated at the time, we believe it was nothing but more empty promises from them, being nothing has been said since I can only assume we were correct!!!
Thank you OBA for doing this, as at least now we know something will actually be done, instead of the usual grandstanding by the plp who are nothing but full of hot air!!
listen kangoocar the mans name is roban
I think you need to take break and sort yourself out
Frank, respect is EARNED not given, the man committed something akin to treason by writing the nonsense he did on the Caribbean News along with promising and grandstanding about all he was going too do for the relief effort!! And guess what?? It was all hot air like every time he opens his mouth!!! now sort yourself out!! Bermuda and the majority of Bermudians are in a desperate state because of the plp and its previous way of running our affairs and we no longer have time for their politricks and nonsense, if bud wants to grandstand, he needs to back it up!!
How do you know nothing has been done by the PLP on this, simply because over a month & a half later the government wants to jump on board the bandwagon without actually contributing themselves? There was a public outcry (well over a month ago) as to why the government hadn’t helped in any relief efforts (When PLP was rallying for donations in support), something the government didn’t hesitate to do for sending aid elsewhere & I may add that aid came directly out of government purse unlike this one. While this is merely government going in sync to show support with the West Indian Association in having a grub day & asking the public to raise the funds rather then the Government themselves giving aid as they did in response to another tragic event.
Thought Government said there where funds with in the budget put aside for such events, don’t tell me they looted the entire allotted funds for one single event? This makes it seem like they’re contributing but really they haven’t did nothing but ask for public donations. Either way, I am still happy that something rather then nothing is being done.
Time Shall Tell, it is very simple to know the bud and the plp did nothing, if they had they would have surely been grandstanding about!!! Geez, wake up plper’s !!!!
Now how can I make a comment about Govt. Aid funding to certain places without getting the race card thrown at me.
LMFAO
Stop throwing the race card yourself and that will stop.
Until the Lions tell their tale, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter!
So as an Associate Member of CARICOM, we are pleased to do whatever we can to help our friends an neighbors to our south.
Not only are they friends and neighbors but kin folk as most African Bermudians have St. Kitts and Nevis Roots.
Well I guess it’s who you ask, my bad.
@ Kangoocar not everyone who questions the OBA actions are as you put it “plper’s”. What I do find questionable is the timing of this action by the OBA. The tragic event happened over a month & a half ago & they wait until bad press was sent out in that region about them then all of a sudden they care enough to cosign for a public fund raiser…..
maybe they paid for the poster, and dunkley definately got paid for his time
“How do you know nothing has been done by the PLP on this”
Because if they had actually done anything they would have held a press conference announcing as much with staged photos to back it up. So far all that voters can recall is an announcement of their intent. Sound familiar?
Not to sound so negative but seems like we are always helping others and no one helps us when we are in need.
It’s about who you can help when they require help, not about what you get in return.
@ Time Shall Tell,I don’t have a problem with that but like I said who helps us when we are in need?
The way things are going around here you should have your answer in the next year or two .
And also with that type of thinking we are open to people taking advantage of us, im all for help but we must think Bermuda first people here struggling also, as much as ill like to help like others here we just cant.
I guess you missed the article where it was stated we’re better off then 93% of the worlds population.
Lol, this government is so fake. Even worse is the blind ignorance of kangoocar. Actually, kangoocar knows the truth, but is just an example of the innate dishonesty of Oba supporters. Carribbean relief effort….PLP assistance….natural relationship that doesn’t require gloating. This is Dunkleys attempt at good PR in the region after the Oba realized that the region know all about their gutter governance.
Concerned citizen, being the connection between the plp and the Caribbean is so close and therefore means they don’t have to gloat about their help, you should have no problem getting an update from them on it being the plp were asking all Bermudians to donate stuff such as refrigerators and the like, even though our appliances run on 110volts as opposed to the islands that run on 220, anyway that is another story, but they should at least give us the courtesy of telling us we did to help their cause!!! As I said should not be a problem according to your thoughts so I and everyone else will look forward to what you have too say!!!
Like I said, the PLP are not gloating, and you should stop stargazing.
Ok, got it, they did nothing they promised too do!!!
Woban called it organisational expertise…..that he and the PLP were providing to the WIA.
Are these thge civil servants whose jobs are in question being asked to donate or just the jobs that are secure?
