The Bermuda Rugby Football Union League season continued at the National Sports Center this past weekend. In the men’s opener Police and Teachers played to a 12-12 draw in a see-saw battle.

Police got tries from Ronan Kane and ‎Paul Davis while Tommy Edwards converted one conversion and Patrick Richardson got Police off to a flyer scoring a try early. Cory Boyce would add another try with Shauntino Simons kicking only one conversion.

In the ladies division, the Police Ladies defeated the Teachers Ladies 1-0. Mika Tomita scored the only try of the game for the Police whilst the Mariners Ladies defeated the Renegades Ladies 2 – 1. Dennika Borden scored twice for the Mariners Ladies and Amy Mcglynn scored a try for the Renegades Ladies.

In the final men’s division match of the day, the Mariners defeated Renegades 29 – 21 recording their first win of season.

The Mariners fielded a strong side and set the tone early with some strong forward play which ended up with powerhouse prop Ed Barnes driving over for a try from close to open up the scoring. When Rory Dublin kicked the conversion it gave them a 7 – 0 lead.

The Renegades responded with some beautiful rugby and ran in three tries in succession. Jahan Cedinio crashed over from close first which was followed by John Quigley’s burst through middle and then Tom Healy was able to go over from close. All three conversions were made by Greg Garside.

It looked like curtains for cellar dweller Mariners but they showed their fortitude by digging deep. Dan McGavern closed the gap with a quintessential old time storming run to make the score 21-12 at the half.

Former National team and West Indian player Dan McGavern continued to show his class with another try after the half which was converted by Dublin to pull the Mariners within two making the score 21 – 19.

The Mariners would soon take the lead when Dublin kicked a penalty, making the scored 22 – 21. When Steve Husbands powerfully drove in from a few yards out after sustained pressure, and Bermuda Under 19 player Kamel Easton kicked the conversion, the Mariners had recorded their first league win this season.
