Audio: Premier & Opposition MPs On “Jetgate”

March 24, 2014

The private jet trip taken by Premier Craig Cannonier and two Cabinet Ministers last year — now dubbed “jetgate” — was the subject of discussion in the House of Assembly again this Friday, with Opposition MPs questioning the Premier on aspects surrounding the trip.

The Premier was questioned about the fourth person on the flight — his business manager Stephen DaCosta — and what his role was. The Premier replied saying the “question has been answered in the media already,” prompting an Opposition MP to ask if MPs should get answers from talk shows.

When asked to name the fourth person in Parliament, the Premier declined, saying that it’s “already out there” and “they already know.” Attorney-General Mark Pettingill was also asked to name the fourth person, which he did, receiving a positive reaction from the Opposition.

Following this exchange in the morning session, Members of Parliament came together and agreed on a number of matters, leading one MP to refer to it as a “kumbaya moment.”

Both Government and Opposition MPs agreed on the Criminal Codes Amendment as well as the Morgans Point Resort Act, with both bills passing with bipartisan support.

The Premier is showing disrespect for not just the Opposition members who are asking the questions, but for the Speaker of the House and the electorate. His resistance to answer the questions speaks volumes. It is sad to see this behavior and I think it is time for Premier Cannonier to step aside.

such a waste of time…you guys sound desperate tryna get PCC on anything. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall the UBP going after Ewart on his mis deeds to this degree…..Jetgate is nothing compared to several Brown-gates we had endure.

As someone who does not believe in party politics and would never become a member of any political party, I find it so sad that people will support their party no matter what they do. Wrong is wrong and right is right. Two wrongs do not make it right. The UBP was a disgrace, the PLP was an even bigger disgrace and the OBA so far has been a total embarrassment to not only the people of Bermuda but anyone in the world who is following Bermuda politics or the media. Our so called honorable Premier and certain MP’s from both sides of the house need to resign. I look forward to the day when the electorate demand that we get rid of party politics and elect independent candidates to work together for the good of this small but precious island gem in the middle of the Atlantic.

    • PBanks says:

I fear that day is a long way away. Last election, not a single Independent candidate came close to sniffing victory. Party machinery wins.

    • Tricks are or kids says:

John E. Thorne I agree with you 100%……….
