Bermuda Artist Establishes Art For Food

March 17, 2014

Local residents have a chance to buy a gift of 25 Bermuda prints for a $16.00 for families and friends in the U.S, [plus other addresses abroad], and at the same time, know their purchase will go directly to help feed the homeless in Bermuda.

Author/artist Joan K. Aspinall, is promoting this fund raiser through a new web site called Odd Jobber.co with all monies collected will go directly to Austin Smith, founder of Church Without Walls, who was featured in a story posted on Dec. 25th, 2013, entitled “Santa Claus of the Homeless“.

Ms. Aspinall said of Austin Smith that he is one of the most caring, compassionate individuals she has ever met, and gives his full energy into administering to the lowest element of the homeless in Bermuda – the drunks, the drug addicts, the criminals, and prostitutes. He receives no aid from government for the work he performs and spends his own resources on buying food and feeding the homeless on Court Street and the Bulls Head Car Park.

“He has a brilliant, scholarly mind and executes the wisest, most unprejudiced assessment of the frailty of human nature. He radiates with unconditional love for his fellow man,” said Aspinall.

“I have Bermuda art prints in storage in the U.S.,” said Ms. Aspinall. “We don’t want to ship them to Bermuda, so I conceived this idea of Art For Food. Charity begins at home, and the plight of the homeless is a tragic and overwhelming plague on our society. A gift of Bermuda prints not only spreads images of our beautiful island, but will, no doubt, delight the recipients and certainly provide a hungry person with soup and sandwich.”

Prints may be used for framing, as notecards, or as gifts. “Sold individually as matted prints in Bermuda, the designs sell for $15.00 each,so they make wonderful gifts,” said Aspinall.

Customers can order the art prints, pay via credit card, and then pass on the recipient’s address directly to Joan. “When I saw the Odd Jobber site, I knew it was a perfect venue for my Bermuda crafts, prints and books. We were going to the location of the stored prints, so this connection with Odd Jobber incited the idea to use them to raise funds.”

Odd Jobber enables the local person to pay for the purchase, while the mailing, however, will take place in the U.S., thus cutting the cost of postage dramatically. “We could never do this project from Bermuda for the same price,” she said. “I will even enclose a note to the recipient from the gift giver.”

A spokesperson said, “Odd Jobber will deposit the entire funds for the prints, $12.00, directly to the Church Without Walls. and retain $4.00 for postage. For full information on the project, go into Odd Jobber.com and search either the vendor names or Items for Sale.”

Anyone know where I can purchase large portraits of Joan’s work? Most beautiful local art I have seen yet.

I would suggest checking with the Arts Centre at Dockyard. They sell a lot of her work, and may be able to assist you.
