Photos: 2014 Earth Hour Celebration At City Hall
On Saturday night [Mar 29], Bermuda joined with over 150 countries around the world in celebrating Earth Hour, which encourages people to turn off their lights to serve as a visual reminder of the importance of a sustainable lifestyle.
Hundreds turned out at City Hall to watch Bermuda’s own Broadway star Rebecca Faulkenberry headline the Earth Hour events, performing songs from her hit show Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark with her co-star Reeve Carney.
But it did not all happen at City Hall – children from the West Pembroke Primary school held their own Earth Hour event and got a surprise visit from Mr Carney and Miss Faulkenberry.
Miss Faulkenberry said: “I hope that in some way Earth Hour brings awareness about our own power to make choices and a difference in our world. Also, the environment is such an important issue, and gathering last evening bring us together to remind us how beautiful our island is”.
As well as Miss Faulkenberry’s performance, events on the Island included a Walk of Flame at 8.30pm, the start of Earth Hour, a ‘green’ expo at Washington Mall, performances by spoken word artist Tiffany Paynter, In Motion Dancers, Rock Fire, Island Teaser, DanceSations , Impact Drumming, and TROIKA, as well as an ecoRUNWAY trash fashion show by Bermuda High School.
Earth Hour in Bermuda was organized by sustainability advocacy group, Greenrock, and its Executive Director Gordon Johnson, thanked everyone who took part and who sponsored the event for making it such a success.
He added: “I was particularly pleased that a lot of young people turned out with their families. One of the messages we have been trying to get across is that we have the opportunity to take action now for the sake of generations to come.
“Earth Hour as an event in Bermuda has been growing and growing and we really hope that we are starting to get its message across that: sustainability it is about people, economy and environment – it is about being able to have the life that you want for yourself, your children, grandchildren and our community.
“I hope that next year, we can build on this event and make it bigger and better in order to keep spreading the message that we have the opportunity to solve together what we can’t do alone.”
