Photos/Video: Saltus St Baldrick’s Head Shaving
[Updated with video] The St. Baldrick’s Foundation kicked off its 8th annual head shaving event at Saltus Grammar School this morning [Mar 14], with more than 80 students, staff, and relatives taking part in the fundraising effort.
The event raised money for children’s cancer research, with non-profit hairpiece maker Locks of Love also benefiting as several students, relatives, and a teacher donated their hair.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation at Saltus Grammar School:
Director of Partnerships for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Susan Heard was on hand to take in the event, watching as students, staff, and family all involved themselves in the charitable cause by parting ways with their hair.
Starting at 4.30pm this afternoon, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will begin their official head shaving event at the BAA gymnasium.
The slideshow below contains 60 photos from this morning’s event:
Update 4.35pm: Following the event, a spokesperson said, “On Friday, March 14, for the 8th year in a row [7th year as an officially registered site], Saltus Grammar School students and relatives had their heads shaved to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
“Tara Soares, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Executive Director, who was in attendance and working with the Foundation, said that $50,000 of the funds raised will go to BCHC’s SunSmart Programme,a school and summer camp based programme teaching sun protective behaviours.
“On one of the chilliest days this week, there were over 80 participants [including relatives of students, one of whom is a Trustee and one a teacher] at two St. Baldrick’s events at Saltus today – one in the Upper Primary Hall in the morning and the other in the Haygarth Gym at the Secondary lunch hour.
“Saltus participants have exceeded their goal of $120,000 and have raised nearly $200,000.
“In addition, Locks of Love also benefited as there were several Upper Primary and Secondary girls, along with two mothers, one teacher, and a sister from BHS [whose brother had his head shaved], who donated their hair to provide hair pieces for children with long-term medically related hair loss. Of these, a few had their heads shaved as well.
“This year we were fortunate to have Mrs. Susan Heard, Director of Partnerships for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, attend both events as well as Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre representatives. The Deputy Governor attended the event in the Haygarth Gymnasium. Relatives and classmates shouted encouragement to the shavees.
“In addition to the head shaving events on Friday, over 165 Upper Primary students made a donation to participate in a “Rainbow Loom Lunch” on Monday. Green bracelets made at the lunch were sold, and funds raised from this, together with Upper Primary milk and popcorn sales, will also go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Upper and Lower Primary students had a Green Grub Day on Friday to raise additional funds, and Secondary students made a donation to view the event in the Gym.
“Many thanks to hairdressers from the following salons who volunteered their time and expertise for this worthwhile cause: Salon Visage, The Cutting Room, Salon 27, Bang Bang Hair, and TK Hair.”

it’s wonderful the students, teachers and parents are participating in this fantastic charible event. However, parents, please be mindful of what you give your kids for costumes. I’m sure the parent of the child wearing the Guinness hat meant well.
Well done Saltus! Tremendous effort!
