Holland America Ship Diverts For Sick Passenger

Passengers lined the upper balconies on board the Holland America cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam as it approached St. David’s at approximately 3pm this afternoon [Apr 8] to drop off a sick passenger.

Pilot boat St David met the diverted ship to pick up the 82 year old male passenger and transported him to Ordnance Island in St George’s where a waiting ambulance transported the man to hospital. The Nieuw Amsterdam continued on its way to Horta, Azores having left from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

About an hour later the Norwegian registered liquefied natural gas [LNG] tanker Suez Boston which could be seen off the south east of the island for most of the afternoon approached to complete a crew transfer before continuing on its journey.
