SPCA Offers Reward For Info On Injured Puppy
[Updated: Reward has been doubled following an anonymous matching donation]
The SPCA is offering a $500 reward to anyone who has any information leading to the conviction of the person[s] responsible for placing a puppy with a docked tail in a dumpster in Devonshire on April 10, 2014.
As we previously reported, the puppy was found in a dumpster by a Bernews reader who emailed the photo in, and after contacting the SPCA we received the unfortunate news that the puppy had to be euthanised due to a botched attempt at tail docking, which is the intentional removal of part of an animals tail.
The puppy found in the dumpster:
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda SPCA is offering a reward of $500 to anyone who has any information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for placing a black and tan female puppy with a docked tail in a dumpster in Devonshire on or before the morning of April 10, 2014.
“If any member of the public has any information that could lead to a conviction in this matter they are encouraged to call the SPCA 24 hour emergency number, 737-1108 or they can make an anonymous report through our website [link].
“The SPCA would like to thank the public for their concern in this matter,” the spokesperson added.
Update Apr 24, 3.00pm: The reward has been increased to $1000, as a $500 anonymous matching donation was given to the shelter today.

Regrettably a “conviction” will probably mean a slap on the wrist by the magistrate. Perhaps a day in the very same dumpster with a sign around their neck would be more fitting. Clearly something missing from someone who can cause such suffering to an animal and then discard it like that.
Reality is we know who does this.
We also know much more that affects our community.

A poor puppy had to be put down because of the selfish act of a human who obvisouly didn’t know what they were doing. having adog is having a companion not having an animal just for the sake and then dumping it because you dont know what to do with it. have some balls and take it to the vet or SPCA thats what they are there for. take courage and responsablity for your actions!

If convicted, I pray the judge gives them the maximum penalty under the law. Plus, plaster their picture all over the media so the whole island knows what a sick creep they are!

some one must know,if anyone bought some of these puppies or accepted ,for one they need shots,licence,and neightbours might just notice new pet owners around especially if you notice just about the same age just might just get to the real culprit.Or close.
The person who did this was planning on making the animal into a fighter …
so, who do you know who is in to betting on dog fights or who wanted a dog that could be
tormented enough to become a vicious killer?

From the first report about this incident.
The puppy in question was taken to a veterinarian for assessment and it was discovered that the puppy had a chronic medical condition resulting in the inability to control its bowels. This is probably why the puppy was dumped. Unfortunately this condition has no treatment so the puppy was euthanised.
“It is quite likely that the problem was caused by a botched attempt at tail docking. The puppies tail had been cut too short and the nerves surrounding the rectal area had been permanently damaged.

Really shouldn’t be too difficult to track the culprit down if everyone was prepared to work together which sadly they won’t be . Too many hidden agenda’s and too much dodgy goings on. Bermuda is such a small Island that you could find the person responsible in a few days of hard work as it is a legal requirement to have your dog licenced.Obviously this is from an illegal litter if it has no chip but even so the parents are likely to be legal and if they are not are probably known to someone.
You would need the co-operation of the vets and the Government to check on the data base’s. You know (or roughly know the breed) so first stop would be a personal visit to all those people that own the breed , after all it came from somewhere and didn’t just appear out of thin air.
The vets know or suspect who is docking tails after all they see the results every day and turn a blind eye. It is unlikely that the bitch only had the one puppy so there will be others which will turn up. So just keep your eyes open for similar puppies of the same age and start from there.
There are lots of other avenues to follow up but the government really has no interest in animal welfare. Where is the government vet on record in this case condemning the practice and vowing to investigate and prosecute ?
Apart from the obvious case of the dog drowning when was the last time the Bermuda Government actually prosecuted someone for cruelty to animals and for that matter when was the last time the SPCA properly investigated a case and not just offered a reward.
Where have all the SPCA Inspectors and Animal Welfare Officers gone ?
