Bermuda Support For “Bring Back Our Girls”

May 15, 2014

Amnesty International, The Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT], and Imagine Bermuda are collaborating with the global movement to ‘Bring Back Our Girls’, in response to the kidnapping of almost 300 school girls in Nigeria, which has touched a chord with people around the world.

The campaign aims to support the return of the girls, who were kidnapped from a school in Nigeria during the predawn hours of April 15, 2014 by the terrorist group Boko Haram.

AFP News footage of showing video released by Boko Haram:

While the Nigerian government has attempted to work towards a solution, little progress has been made, leaving a combined international effort to search for the girls – so far to no avail.

A spokesperson said, “The crisis in that corner of the world points to a number of issues, including the need to maintain respect for the rights of all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, faith, or any label, and the importance of education in the lives of young people everywhere.

“We are calling for the local community to play some part in this campaign in a variety of ways.

“The local chapter of Amnesty International is circulating a petition to support the campaign which will be available on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 12.00pm through 4.00pm in the Washington Mall. The public can submit a solidarity photo at the Amnesty website.

“The BUT has asked their members to wear red on Friday, May 16, 2014 in support of this cause. The BUT is also encouraging their members to post pictures of support of “#BRINGBACKOURGIRLS #BUTbda” on their Facebook pages. The Caribbean Union of Teachers, which has over 40 member units, including Bermuda, is also supporting this day.

First Lady Michelle Obama tweets #BringBackOurGirls

“Imagine Bermuda has been working with school principals in both the private and public sectors at all levels to set aside five minutes on the morning of Friday, May 16 for a school-wide reflection on the campaign.

“In light of same, we are inviting the whole local community to set aside some time over this weekend, with their friends and family, to reflect on this matter of global importance as it might be used as a ‘teachable moment’ for the young people in our lives.”

In addition, tomorrow afternoon [May 16], Saltus students will gather on the school field, standing for a photograph to express sympathy and join in the worldwide condemnation of the terrorists’ actions.

And if you are quick you could deliver it to the Chief Justice of Nigeria who is attending a conference at Cambridge Beaches. A wonderful opportunity to illustrate that Bermuda and the whole world is watching. BRING OUR GIRLS BACK…and educate them.

  4. Alvin Williams says:

Agreed for a country that waged a brutal civil war to prevent one of it’s regions the Eastern state of Biafra from seceding from the Nigerian Federation and endured long years of military rule; you can’t convince me that it can not wage total war against these so-called Islamic terrorists?
Or is this reluctance have more to do with the fact that the missing Nigerian girls come from a poor region of Nigeria? that is what is being said by some Nigerians and if so the world is right to hold the feet of both the Nigerian government and these so-called Islamic terrorists to the fire.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Why do you keep calling them “so-called” terrorists? Don’t you agree that they’re terrorists?

      • Ace girl says:

You are absolutely right. They are terrorists. 300 young girls, that is 3 times the number who graduated today from BC. Something must be done whether they are rich or poor and all the talking and analyzing in the world does not change that the welfare of these beautiful young girls is at risk. Treat these terrorists with the respect they treated these young women…None!

        • Put pupils first says:

Not that I can speak for Alvin but I assumed he meant so-called Islamic. There can’t be any doubt they are terrorists.
I hope with all of my heart that all the girls are safely reunited with their families.

          • Sandy Bottom says:

Are you sure? He wasn’t sure about whether the Boston Bombers were terrorists either.

  5. Yes I says:

Having been to Nigeria, this event has shaken not only Nigerians but the whole world. Bermuda I applaud you for making an effort. Can more be done when the cameras are turned off though?

  7. God Eye Over All says:

As long as dogmatic Islamic law is in power in any nation, the peoples will be terribly affected by it. Taliban, Boko Haram, etc, all are merely OBEYING THEIR RELIGIOUS LAW.

Kidnapped girls are one thing, but do you know that black-on-black slavery has existed since whites abolished it? It exists in Africa and other muslim countries. The children are gang raped and treated like animals, killed when not needed any more or when they disobey an order from their master. This is modern day times with this happening, yet we constantly hear how evil “the white man is and was for what happened 400 years ago.”

the largest slave trade in the world right now is the WHITE SLAVE TRADE. Yes. White women slaves number in the millions and they are the favorite slaves ( for sex and rape) of muslim slavemasters. The middle-east is filled with white slaves.

All of this slavery, almost ALL modern slavery, is the result of Islamic Law. It is the only law system on earth that commands slavery.

Islamic law is putting to death a woman for marrying a Christian man in Africa. Islamic law commands stoning a young girl to death if she was raped. That means smashing her skull open with large rocks while she lays helpless on the ground buried up to her waist.

Islamic law promotes child labor and child slavery, child abuse, and child exploitation. It is islamic law that says a 4 year old girl must marry a 75yr old man, who then rapes her on their “honeymoon”, often killing the young girl. But it is their law.

When the United Nations or a greater power finally steps up, and says that this law system is BARBARIC AND DEGENERATE, maybe then the world can be made clean from islamic law.

What other religion or law of nations states in its books, “ALLAH COMMANDS YOU TO KILL ALL INFIDELS.”

How can the world exist in peace or even try, as long as there is some psychotic law system and belief system like this still in operation in such modern times?

SLAVERY IS ISLAMIC LAW. BANISH ISLAMIC LAW AND END THE SLAVERY.

IF YOU ALLOW ISLAMIC LAW TO PERSIST, BOKO HARAM AND SUCH WILL CONTINUE TO KILL, RAPE, AND ENSLAVE INNOCENTS.

It is not a matter of nations, it is a matter of beliefs. The law will exist no matter whether the home nation supports all the beliefs or not. The belief system is barbaric, and is WHY they feel justified doing the EVIL they do.

The WORLD needs to step in, grow a pair, and STOMP OUT THE BULLYING! How long will we watch our children get abused and just say, “But it is their belief, and they are entitled to their own belief.”

  9. Tough Love says:

Can we do more than reflect on the situation and actually pray? The released video shows girls who have “converted” to Islam from Christianity. I’m sure this was forced and I’m sure some girls refused since only 100 girls are in the video.

Any prayer warriors out there willing to fight for these girls? I hope so.
