May 30, 2014

pettingillClarien Bank today [May 30] confirmed the appointment of Mark Pettingill as Chief Legal Officer, following what they said was an “extensive local and international recruitment process.”

Mr. Pettingill brings over 20 years’ experience to the position, and most recently served as the Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs for the Government of Bermuda.

He resigned as Attorney-General on May 22nd, being replaced by Trevor Moniz, and plans to remain in the House as a backbencher.

In a statement today, Clarien said, “The appointment reaffirms the bank’s commitment to recruit experienced and specialized talent to support the on-going local and international growth of Clarien in the pursuit of its mission to be a leading provider of financial services in Bermuda and globally.

Ian Truran, Co Chief Executive Officer, commented: “Mark’s expertise will enable the creation of a sound legal framework to mitigate risk to the bank and its clients.

“This, in turn, will support the senior management and banking teams in their objective to deliver world-class financial services to ultra high net worth individuals, families and institutions, across our wealth management and investment banking business worldwide.

“Mark will add significant expertise as we utilize the strengths of the Bermudian jurisdiction, along with our unique blend of international banking experience, thorough risk controls and access to major global capital and financial markets, to deliver a compelling offering to clients.

“I look forward to welcoming Mark to the team, and working together to bring the strengths of Bermuda to a global client base,” added Mr. Truran.

  1. sage says:

    Who cares.

  2. whoa says:

A bit confused on this one as he is a generalist criminal lawyer with no technical or banking background. Good luck to him though.

  3. watching says:

I hope he provides better advice to Clarien bank than he provided to the former Premier Cannonier.

  4. Scotty says:

Expertise in banking to mitigate iskr???? I thought he was a Barrister. It is becoming more and more apparent you can say anything you wish when you want the individual to ‘fit ‘ the position at Clarien. Lay off the service people and bring in the big guns. I suspect Mr. Ppentingill will not be earning $40.00 thousand a year. I hope he does more in this position than he did legally at the AG’s Chambers

  5. Coffee says:

After reading Marks bio in another place , it states that he is an avid martial artist . Where it pertains to jetgate , he subscribed to a classic martial art mantra ,” a good run is better then a bad stand.”

Best of wishes in your new place of employment , but Marc Bean and Co. Still wants to know what you knew about Landow and exactly when did you know it ?

    • Anon says:

…because that’s Bermuda’s biggest concern right now…Landow….who didn’t even bid for a contract? What about the $2B and the budget deficit?

      • Coffee says:

Funny thing about what you say is this ; Landow was probably THE INVESTOR BERMUDA NEEDED RIGHT NOW , BUT HE WAS FRIGHTENED AWAY BY INCOMPETENT AMATEURS ATTEMPTING TO PLAY ON THE BIG STAGE !

What jurisdiction is working in the black ?

  6. Family Man says:

… following what they said was an “extensive local and international recruitment process.”

    And they chose Pettingill?

That must have been a very shallow pool of candidates.

    • balanced facts says:

If you look at Marks record objectively and what he did as A internationally particularly they are lucky to have him! Good luck Sir.

  7. truth tells says:

A loss to Cabinet and a plus to Clarien…back bench just got a lot stronger!

  8. OB says:

Good result for Clarien Bank…not so great for Government!

  9. Andrew Little says:

    …. Omg, they’re hiring a Bermudian!… Omg, they don’t need a work permit!… Omg… Lol!!

  10. Always Watching says:

What experience? this guy has no qualifications as a corporate/company/property/business lawyer. He was a mediocre criminal lawyer at best. I smell a rat here folks, what for it !!!

    • Rick Rock says:

Oh I get it. You would rather they had hired an expat?

      • Hmmmm says:

I would rather they had just been honest

  11. smdh says:

3 jobs in 3 years….hmmm…..I give him 12 months and he’ll be gone.

Family Man you are on par….very shallow pool indeed.

    • Fur Real says:

The guy was at one law Firm for over 15 years! WHo would want to be A-G for more than 18 months if you have half a brain!

  12. OB says:

Clarien pulled a good one here…and good for him after doing the thankless job!

  13. js says:

hope Crockwell has a golden parachute but methinks he will find himself like Cannonier

    chewed up and spit out

  14. O'Brien says:

Talking about landing on your feet…

He spends most of his career as a criminal barrister of no great distinction, serves a year and half as AG without exactly covering himself in glory, quits in a storm of controversy and is then handed a plum corporate gig for which he has no apparent qualifications?

I’m sure the ‘real story’ behind this appointment is out there just waiting to be told!

    • Fur Real says:

“Of no great distinction” ??? Really…he sure represented enough PLP people including a former Premier…take a look at his record!

  15. Make a New Plan Stan says:

Did Marc Bean say in advance of this announcement that Mr. Pettingill was going to work for Clarien?

In response to that, did Pettingill say, “Mr. Bean seems to know more about me than I know about myself.” ?

What type of Harry Potter…..juju is this?

Is Bean reading tea leaves or something?

    That’s scary……

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

hahaha…lotta “informas” out der…u kno “snitches” n “spys”…maybe eddie snowden has some nsa info for us..huh?

  16. ONLY HOPE says:

I worked for Mr. Pettingill, awesome boss, really nice man and brilliant mind. The haters clearly don’t know him! Good luck, he deserves it, he will be missed!

  17. Fur Real says:

Pettingill was actually a very good A-G and had a lot of mess to clear up which he did very well. PLP tried to undermine him cause they were afraid of what he may investigate and expose…and the chickens seem to be coming home to roost! Clarien Banks gain is the Governments loss but can’t blame a man for taking an opportunity!

    • Coffee says:

Mark turned out to be the weakest AG ever . Investigate WHAT! He ended up being the one investigated and shamefully … I say shamefully had to resign from the highest legal position in Bermuda .

  18. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

what if clarien told you that they will not answer your questions because its non if your business…then wat? you gonna call super shaker sherrie? lmmfao!!

  19. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

if u knew anything about banks you’d know why they hired a good criminal lawyer…but it amazes me how you all have more knowledge than our elected govt. officials do, and now i also see you all have more knowledge at running a banking institution than the actual institution does…come to think of it you all know more about policing too don’t you..? that’s why you are being considered more n more of a hindrance than a help…

food for thought…the very same people that can help you are the ones that you try to drag through the mud on a daily basis…try dat s#!t wit me an see how much help you receive. SWIM or SINK!!!

  20. John Thorne says:

Not sure why Clarien Bank would want to associate and hire a disgraced MP?
