Plein Air Art Group To Host Two Art Shows

June 16, 2014

The Plein Air Group of Bermuda is getting set to host two art shows, each of them opening on June 22, 2014 from 5.30pm through 7.30pm at the Dockyard Arts Centre.

The first of the two shows, the group’s annual members show, will feature work by both eager beginners and some of Bermuda’s leading professionals in a mix of traditional mediums, including watercolors, oils, pen and ink, pastels, and acrylics. The show will remain open until July 19, 2014.

Subject matter covered by the pieces shown will include island-wide views of private home and gardens, landscapes, and seascapes, all with a focus on capturing the details that aim to inspire an investment in Bermuda art.

Opening the same night will be a show called “Tinker’s Roses,” with close-up oil paintings of Bermuda’s roses by Diana Tetlow on display.

A spokesperson said, “The Plein Air Painters of Bermuda group was started in Jonah Jones’ backyard in Somerset about 12 years ago; since that time, the group has had 11 annual shows.

“The group’s objective is to introduce painters at all levels of expertise to the joys and tribulations of working on location. For beginners, the objective is seeing how more experienced painters solve visual problems and the growth that comes from painting on a regular basis. For professionals, the objective is a chance to share expertise and get feedback on current work from their peers.”

“Usually every week, depending on weather, an email is sent out to the group, saying that we are going to be at a particular location, most often on Sundays and occasionally on a Saturday. The meeting places vary from private homes to public spaces all over the island.

“We start around 9.30am and paint until noon, at which time we put up all the work that has been done and have a group critique, the object of which is to help people grow and improve their skills. During the session, the more experienced painters in the group often spend time going around offering advice and encouragement to anyone who needs help.”

“Anyone can join us; all we need from you is a current email address. We welcome people working in any media and we have absolute beginners and experienced professionals working side by side, presently with over 60 names on our list.

“About 10 people show up for any given session; some come for a few sessions and then reappear a few months later. One steadfast member even painted with us all through her pregnancy and then came back with us afterward.”
