Johnny Barnes Horse Wins Maiden Race In UK
[Updated] A horse named after the island’s famed greeter Johnny Barnes will run his debut race at Yarmouth in the United Kingdom today [August 13], connecting one of Bermuda’s best-known citizens to the horse track.
According to Sky Sports, the two-year-old Acclamation offspring, trained by John Gosden and ridden by William Buick, will make his maiden appearance at 1.05pm local time, representing owners Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing Limited.
The horse’s namesake recently celebrated his 91st birthday, with the well-known greeter still spending the morning on Crow Lane as he waved to passersby.
Morning commuters could be heard yelling out “Happy Birthday” as they passed Mr. Barnes on June 23, with one lady stopping to give him a birthday kiss.
Update 3.25pm: Johnny Barnes won his race this afternoon, coming first among five others as jockey William Buick crossed the finish line first.
Bermuda should put a collective bet on this horse!
Should put a statue of de horse beside his statue.
Should he not get royalties as well $$$$?
He won
Go Johnny!
and heeeeeere comes JOHNNY across the line by a nose !
Sweet story. With all the goodwill that Mr. Barnes shows on a daily basis, hard to believe only one lady stopped to wish him a Happy birthday and to return the love. Happy Birthday Mr. Barnes.
Love you Johnny!
Yay!
My late dad waz John Barnes, a friend told a horse by the name of Johnny Barnes had raced & won, I wished I’d known sooner I would have put a bet in memory of my dad.
