31 Yr Old Admits Running Across Beach Naked
A 31-year-old man appeared in Magistrates Court today [Aug 4] where admitted running naked across a beach in Sandys parish during the first day of Cup Match, with the Court hearing this happened after he lost a bet, and that alcohol was involved.
Thomas Moroney pleaded guilty to the offence, which occurred on Somerset Long Bay on 31st July 2014. The Court heard that Mr. Moroney — said to be a guest worker – had told police that he had done the act as a result of losing a bet.
Senior Magistrate Archie Warner said that Mr. Moroney’s act of running across the beach with, as the Crown Prosecutor described it, a drink in one hand and a certain part of his anatomy in the other, was an act of drunkenness and stupidity.
The Magistrate said that there was no evidence of any sexual or predatory behavior, noted that Mr. Moroney had no prior convictions of any kind, and handed down a Discharge while advising Mr Moroney that “perhaps you should stop drinking”.
Mr. Moroney apologised to the Court, and expressed his embarrassment over the matter.

Surely there was some sort of fine yes?
Give the guy a break…everyone gets turnt up on CUPMATCH WEEKEND! Somerset!!!!!
It’s all innocent fun. If you want to go after the predators then fine, but we live on an island for goodness sake. Go to non- mariners now. A lot of the bikinis, if you can call them that are indecent but people go to these events just to see what crazy things people do. There have been plenty of events on the island, mind you they have been night time events, that encourages and often gives prizes for people to get naked. Bermuda needs to loosen up.
Why weren’t the young ladies that had on thong swimsuits arrested for indecent exposure. There were plenty of little children at horseshoe bay beach, and young ladies in thong swimwear.
Not Surprise let that be a Bermudian they would have gotten a custodial sentence and have to register as a sex offender. WOW my Bermuda have gone to the S*&%&TS.
Is there even a sex offender registry in Bermuda?
And……there have been PLENTY of Bermudians that were ACTUAL sex offenders that have either avoided jail completely or received ridiculously lenient sentences for much more serious offenses.
Give me a break….
Yes, there is a sex offenders registry. Has been for years.
Not according to Kim Wilson when she was AG. She said the law does not allow for a SE registry. That was in July 2012. I don’t recall anything being set up since.
Not that it’s relevant in this case, by any means.
You are confusing two things. There IS a registry, just not a public one. The law, as it stands, does not allow for a public registry.
As an aside, public sex registries have been found to be largely ineffective and counterproductive.
You’re right. Thanks for the clarification.
Not that it has any bearing in this case.
Maybe there’s a registry known by and maintained by the police, but no public one for general consumption? I can’t see the police *not* keeping track of things, even if on a rare basis.
To my knowledge there is no official sex offenders registry and has never been one. There is however an ad hoc one ofn facebook
What has a sex offenders registry got to do with a drunken guy who is bet to run naked across the sand??
Probably the most harmless thing that happened under the influence in the last 50 years!
If people have a problem with seeing the human body then they should consult the maker.
Stop all this “if that was a Bermudian” crap. A Bermudian would have got the same treatment.
Yeah… A Bermudian like Trevor Moniz’s son. How many ganja (tea) remarks did you OBA-blind/faithful sling his way?
Makai Dickerson, anyone, anyone? His charges were dropped and he was alleged to be in possession of marijuana, too. He doesn’t have a politician daddy, does he? There are no angels among us, so best just drop it, lest you be labeled as a blind PLP faithful. Or, maybe you are? Hmmm…
Makai Dickerson, anyone? Please. How soon you forget. And the difference with regard to the ‘ganja tea’ incident is that: it’s illegal, MB gave it to his then-three year old child who didn’t have a choice whether to imbibe, and now he’s a public figure. See the difference? Oh never mind. It’s like playing chess with a pigeon. You’ll poop all over anything anyone else says and still strut around like you won the game. SMH.
you evidntly were not at Beach Fest on Thursday to see the way loads of Bermudians were acting with one young man pulling the bikini bottoms of a young lady down. What kind of behaviour is that please.
And he was arressted and will probably get a harsher sentence so what is your point?
And so he should. There’s a huge difference between running along a beach naked and deliberately pulling down a lady’s bikini bottom for all to see. While I accept that the first is indecent exposure, the second is possibly within the area of an indecent assault.
Where did I say one was okay and one wasn’t?
The main difference being the guy running naked was a VICTIMLESS crime!!
I can’t believe I just wasted 3 mins of my life replying to this lol..
I’m ashamed of myself..
Pulling down the bikini bottoms of a girl on a beach might make you a sex offender.
He can’t be a sex offender if he didn’t make any overtures to anybody. Only thing to possibly charge him with was indecent exposure. Don’t jump to the wrong conclusions.
That’s a load, ‘if this had been a Bermudian’ with the same conditions, would have gotten the same. They looking up how the courts have treated guest workers in comparison. We have had Bermudians involved in drunk driving deaths get off with fines and off the road, while foreign workers have gone to jail or been given suspended sentences. I am sure that if he had done this at somewhere like Horseshoe, and had it not been the Cup Match holiday, he would have been fined at the least. Course it would have depended what judge they need up in front of too.
Truth but careful you’re going to upset all the foreigners and local whites who hate black Bermudians but defend foreigners who do crap like this. If he were Bermudian the comments would be completely different!!
Keep perpetuating racism in Bermuda. You’ll never move forward. You haters are the worst kind if people.
You realize the judge was black. Right?
Did the article state that the drunk streaker was white?
seems alot of people see the colour thing evrywhere and suddenly it becomes an issue of Bermudian versus Foreigner again?
Black Bermudian judges do their jobs pretty well and put real criminals in prison.
All the prudes on this rock that cant stomach a streaker can go back to church and ask God why he created something so disgusting as the human body.
And that’s a fact!
Was this even worth going to court? Ridiculous waste of time and money. I’ve seen way worse on the beach. Give it a rest.
Obviously you don’t have any kids.. why don’t we just allow anyone to run around naked on our beaches. Smh.
we all come out naked….ease up grandma
SMH’s comment has 57 Likes! Wow… Gotta love the “just relax forget about it” mentality of these guys… Whether it be PRC holders getting status through dishonesty/deception/loopholes, broken promises on gaming referendum, resignation of a surrogate Premier, scrapping term limits, changing law to cancel a Waterfront Lease or white foreign kids running around piss drunk and naked. Relax, they suggest… And just forget about it…
You sound like you have a problem. Not everyone equates simple nudity with sex
@sickofantz-Exactly, I remember when a certain Dentists’ son rode his bike down front street naked….he did get stopped by the police, but at the time we all thought it was awesome!
Also I know of someone else who humped the statue of Jonny Barns while in his knickers (not quite naked), but that doesn’t mean he should be on a sex offender registery….it just means he had a wild night, and prob a really bad headache the next day!
I had someone stand in my yard and urinate. There were children in the yard so hee was charged with indecent exposure and was not given conditional discharge. There was no evidence of sexual or predatory behaviour either. Only difference he was a Bermudian.
The facts are different aren’t they. Assuming it even happened.
The world has a conspiracy against Bermudians!
bermudians are paranoid
You mean like, xenophobic?
Unnecessary for this to have been reported in the first place.Offensive does not equate to indecent.
Don’t suppose the fact that he came onto private property with intent to violate it. Someone urinating in someone else’s yard is a slightly different a set of circumstances, from a drunk idiot streaking across a beach, who, as reported, was trying to maintain some modesty by covering what he could with one hand. Did the person who use your yard as his toilet have a previous background of similar offences? Bermudian/not-Bermudian, you seem intent on ignoring that foreigners tend to get worse treatment in the courts than Bermudians for major crimes like drunk driving.
I am not defending the idiots actions, I think he should have gotten some small fine at the least, and I know there are those out there who would comment about ‘and if you had children at that beach’, I would have simply looked at my children and said, “this is why you should always drink responsibly, if you don’t you will invariably end up doing something stupid that will haunt you for the rest of your days.”
For once Archie got it right.
People do dumb things under the influence and this is one of them.
Look at all the incidents that happen daily in Bermuda as a result of alcohol .
Domestic violence, assaults, rapes, et al.
Tuck your tail between your a** an walk away.
Now your penis…………………………….
I need a rum.
His last name does not help. (face palm)
I never liked the name Thomas myself…
I’m guessing the conditional discharge would state he can’t be arrest for anything in the next x days or he will have to go to jail for x days.
I honestly would have thought they would have fined him as well. I guess the fact he doesn’t have a record or tried to grope anyone but himself help as well. Still I agree if he was Bermudian I wouldnt be surprised to seen ‘at least’ a fine or worse.
This guy don’t something minor and they name and shame him but they can’t name and shame the rapist etc. Wake up Bermuda.
A Black Bermudian, or someone from the Islands to the South, or Africa, would have been given a custodial sentence and a fine.
Typical Bermuda court judgement.
Who appoints these Judges? oh the Governor right?
You cant really blame them though because look at the backlash they got from imprisoning certain folk. An example would be that woman who slashed the other woman in the face. Some people think they are above the law. Oh and apparently tossing foreigners in prison is bad for business nevermind how terrible the crime they committed. That is the mentality of certain people.
ummm…no fine ??? ^%$%^&
also the conditional discharge means after x days he has NO RECORD
this is a middle finger to all those (bermudian, light skinned or not) before him who, even if they payed a small fine ,have a more damaging criminal record
Oh you people are all high and mighty. Alcohol and the sun got the better of him and he did a foolish thing for which he appoligized. I myself think its quite amuzing that he would take a bet that would have him streak naked if he lost. Well done LT..
You sound childish. You don’t excuse people and the illegal s*** they do just because they were “drunk”. He was cognizant enough to understand the bet and that he lost so save the excuses!
Should have been charged with a sex crime/offender and kick him off the island. I’m not surprised he got a slap on the wrist. Disgusting!
Indecent exposure does not make you a sex offender.
It should, especially when children are present. Do you allow men to be naked around your children? He would be considered a sex offender in the States. Its about time Bermuda did the same.
What?!! Are you serious?!! A man runs across a beach holding his junk to cover it, running so fast that you can’t even catch the glimpse you were hoping for and he should be charged as a sex offender?? Loosen up and live a little!!
Hoping for? Not if it was that easily hidden. You sound personally invested…maybe you were hoping for it. You are given extra charges for having WEED near a school which is considered an “increased penalty zone” and it should be the same for creeps like this.
that’s not true. In the US you are not a sex offender for streaking. Naked men around your children. Maybe you didn’t read the article. The man was running with his willy in one hand. Not casually walking down the beach naked trying to talk to children.
Most people find humor in the situation. Why keep comparing Bermuda to the states? It’s not the states. It’s a territory of England, a country that allows full frontal nudity on late night TV.
Even though there is a sex offender registry in the USA it hasn’t stopped the pedos from being pedos.
If around children, yes you are. Im well aware of what Bermuda is and if you could read properly you would know what I meant by mentioning the United States. Of course all the men find it innocent because most of you have perverse thoughts anyway. Im still waiting to hear which one of you allow naked men around your children…sory but thats not my idea of “loosening up”. Sickos.
I would have laughed at the situation if I were with my children. And I work with mostly females. sometimes they have toy parties. i’ve yet to hear about men having toy parties. so don’t even start on this men are all perverts crap.
Thinking someone should be placed on sex offender registry for this is wrong. He had zero intent of any sexual relations with anyone or anything.
I would do precisely what another commenter above would do…point and tell the kids “That is why you need to drink responsibly.” We would all have a good laugh and have a story to tell.
If he was some creepy guy who was wandering around showing his junk to my kids then I would kick his a$$, then call the cops.
I guess you have never desperately had to take a leak and found a quiet, away bush somewhere…Only to be disturbed by…Tell the truth, what’s really bugging you?
Your stupidity.
Don’t bring race into it because we are only assuming that’s what would happen if he had been a person of color…that might not necessarily be true….that’s like saying the black lady that filed the report in the first place only reported it because he was white…IJS
I was at the beach, it was not a big deal, most of us who saw it thought it was funny, but inappropriate for the beach with families. Everyone knew it was a joke as he was not lerking in the trees or walking around with a erection. He had a drink in one hand and his well….in the other, we all thought is was small matters really.
the public embarrasment was enough. the Judges punishment was enough….lighten up Bermuda
“We all thought it was ‘small’ matters”….
Were you trying together funny?!!! Because I cracked up!
oh that he was called mr mooney ……… don’t drink and bet rofl!
One thing I have garnered from Bernews is the fact that if you make a relative post that makes sense and others agree your fine.
If you deal with realities that some cannot fathom they pound you with dislikes.
Bermuda. Small population. Opinionated and really due for a kick in the a**.
The ones that loose out are the ones that did not attend this past weekend of cricket and millions of dollars on the water and the rum and food.
Reality is a bitch and seaweed covered beaches.
Ecconomy my a**.
Greed and money and a drunk gets arrested whilst the thousands dump their garbage and bottles and drive drunk back to their moorings.
Imagine a breath test at Watford Bridge for all those at the helm.
BAA field (Bring Alcohol Along) would be full and then what would archie do ………………….
Truth is a bitch.
FOOL
The courts are setting a pattern here . A white Bermudian of Portuguese descent caught with a substantial quantity of drugs , no case to answer ,walks out of court onto a flight to America , never to be heard from again . A white expat runs naked across a beach packed with families , goes to court and tells the judge ” I lost a drunken bet ” , ” I had a drink in one hand and a bat with two balls in the other , come on it was Cup Match “! . Needless to say , because the drink was drunk and the arresting officer could find no evidence of the offending bat and two balls , the judge gave him a conditional discharge despite his self incriminating statement .
What’s next ?
Anyone remember ace girl who stripped naked, bent over and spread her cheeks at the airport? She was a black bermudian…and there were kids right there watching and she had the mouth of a sailor. What happened to her?
Ships ahoy straight to Co-Ed !
nah nah nah, that doesn’t count ’cause ahhh, Bermuda logic!! AXpats get all the special treatment and we are downtrodden! heretic!!
Do you have any facts that she was let free or are you just speaking out your arse? Ahhh foreigners who act like they are oppressed logic.
he was naked and running towards a fishing boat………….. hmmmmm what was he going to use as bait… a “3inch SHRIMP”
Amazing how complaints invariably fly around about race even when the magistrate – and the Senior Magistrate at that – happens to be black. We have an abundance of judicial experts in Bermuda who constantly whine and complain about sentences either being too lenient or too harsh, and often basing their opinions on their own biases and prejudices, and that applies to both blacks and whites.
I remember the case of a black lady walking completely naked down McGall’s Hill one night who was arrested by the police, and never taken before the court because she had been drinking heavily and the police in their wisdom decided she had no guilty intent. Where exactly does that scenario fit into the racial allegations being hurled around?
Run around fully exposed to minors /. Ok
Arrive on a cruise ship with an herb seed hidden in your purse / NOT OK
Not supporting either but WOW!,
Another World
Ahhhhhh Bermuda – this just a case of Full HOT and Full Fullish! [ lol ] – feeling Nice’ until the Court day1
$1000 Fine – to help pay off the National Debt!
Why the surprise! We should not expect any decency from those like him. Remember, they never grow up–forever children. The alcohol just exposed his raw, naked insanity.
How on earth can people defend this man? I’m all for having a bit of fun, but when your so called “fun” encroaches on the rights of others then it is no longer funny. When I say rights, I have the right to peaceful enjoyment at the beach without seeing all of that. I have two young daughters, and its ridiculous that I should have to use a naked man as an example of why one should stay away from alcohol.
The reason this turns into a racial issue is that people get disgusted when the rules don’t seem to apply equally. The rugby classic is a prime example. When those guys come here and act up, it always amazes me how many people defend it as just the good ole boys having a great time. Let a black Bermudian male do the same thing and people want them locked up forever.
Ok, he lost a bet and streaked across the beach. You all think this is just fine, but where do we draw the line? I know for an absolute FACT that if a black man lost a bet, and was running through Fairylands or Tucker’s Town or the country club or the yacht club any other place where large number of whites congregate it wouldn’t be quite so funny. Let a naked, black man walk across Saltus or BHS where your children can see him, you would NOT say, “Ah, don’t worry honey. He’s just drunk so let me be a lesson not to drink too much alcohol.” I would bet on it!

I know for an absolute FACT that if a black man lost a bet, and was running past the country clubs or the yacht clubs or YOUR neighborhoods it wouldn’t be quite so funny. Let a naked, black man walk across your schools where your children can see him, you would NOT say, “Ah, don’t worry honey. He’s just drunk so let me be a lesson not to drink too much alcohol.” I would bet on it!
But you should be willing to explain the situation to your daughters anyway.
Everyone should feel entitled ‘to peaceful enjoyment’, but you can’t control every situation that comes up. You may come across a car crash, or someone having a heart attack. It may not be pleasant to witness (at varying degrees), but if anyone’s going to explain the hows and whys, if may as well be the parents.
Asking for people to get locked up or deported for non-criminal activity is probably over the top.
Dear uptight bigoted racist bermudians. Please do not travel.
For someone who was there with 3 children that turned and said “mommy can we do that too?”. a little 4 year old girl that had to be explained that private parts should not be out for the public to see and wake up last night in the middle of the night recalling the entire incident.
I really don’t understand how people can take this so lightly. i get that he was drunk and more than likely he regrets his actions but for someone to defend his actions and down play them when i have had to deal with the direct effects on my children makes me very upset.
It is not a “if he was Bermudian” thing or “he only got off because he was not from bermuda” thing. It is a simple issue of what is appropriate and what is not. That was simply not appropriate point blank period.
Your childs problems are obviously the result of poor parenting.
“…and wake up last night in the middle of the night recalling the entire incident.”
Uh uh. Sorry, but ain’t no way a 4 year old kid wakes up as a result of seeing someone run along the beach. You need to look at the reasons they wake up scared.
And it ain’t seeing some random dude running at a distance.
“Dire effects” – what a crock of …
You kid has other issues and you need to look closer to home.
