New Ice Cream With Unique Bermuda Flavour

September 10, 2014

Local chef Peter Jovetic has launched a line of artisan ice cream with a uniquely Bermuda flavour, with Alex & Pete’s Bermuda Artisan Ice Cream now available at select supermarkets, stores and locations across the island with plans to expand further.

Six flavours are currently offered, including a series inspired by the island’s own Gosling’s Bermuda Black Rum and ‘national drinks’ the dark ‘n stormy and swizzle. The series includes the boozy St. George’s Black Rum & Ginger, St David’s Black Rum & Raisin and Rum Swizzle – made with Outerbridge’s Original Bermuda Rum Swizzle Mix.

Chef Peter’s small-batch creations also include Old Fashioned Pineapple Sherbet, Hog Bay Chocolate & Brownie Chunk, Southampton Sea Salt Caramel and soon-to-launch Riddell’s Bay Chocolate Ripple.

Alex & Pete’s is pleased to have partnered with Outerbridge Peppers Ltd. to produce their Rum Swizzle flavour using two of Bermuda’s best known products: Outerbridge’s Original Bermuda Rum Swizzle Mix and Gosling’s Black Seal Rum – a true representation of Bermuda.

There are plans to add a new flavour every month – watch for a special holiday eggnog, coffee and, white chocolate and raspberry ripple.

The line of craft ice cream has already been a hit at Lindo’s supermarkets, where they say the pints have been “flying off shelves”.

“The line of Bermuda-made ice cream has certainly caught the attention of shoppers and is gaining a loyal following. Lindo’s is always proud to support great local products and we are pleased to be a part of Alex & Pete’s success,” said Nelson Arruda of Lindo’s Market in Devonshire.

The brand is also available at Lindo’s in Warwick; Miles Market and The Supermart in Hamilton; Harrington Hundreds; and Selena’s Restaurant in St. George’s. And it is doing very well at the newly opened ice cream parlour, Meltdown, in the Old Cellar Lane, where Rum Swizzle and St. George’s Black Rum & Ginger ice cream are served by the cone or cup and have been a hit with visitors.

“It has been a very successful launch and this is just the beginning for Alex & Pete’s,” said Chef Peter, owner of Food4Thought Catering.

“We are particularly heartened by the support local businesses and supermarkets have given us and want to thank for them for assisting us in launching this exciting new Bermuda-made product. The Bermuda public has also been incredibly supportive of our ice cream and we appreciate all the great comments.”

The launch of Alex & Pete’s comes after more than a year of creating, experimenting with, and taste-testing many different ice cream flavours and ingredients from different sources with friends and Alex & Pete’s marketing consultant Marina Mello.

They worked with graphic designer Jane Pearson of Think Creative Solutions to come up with the Alex & Pete’s concept design and visual branding. Ms Pearson designed the fun labels for the flavours – named after Bermuda parishes and neighborhoods.

“The philosophy behind Alex & Peter’s is simple,” said Chef Peter. “It’s ice cream made from the heart. We use fresh, premium, natural ingredients, and absolutely no artificial flavour or colouring.”

The brand is also a tribute to his son Alex: “Alex is my inspiration for not only the ice cream, but for striving to overcome any challenge in life. Alex has cerebral palsy and what he does every day to accomplish the things many of us take for granted makes me so proud of him. He is, and always will be, my hero.”

Father and son began making ice cream together some 15 years ago. They both loved ice cream and it was something they enjoyed doing together and could bond over. They went from making tubs of their favourite white chocolate vanilla ice cream to churning out batches of Aero mint chunk and Eton mess.

It was last year that Chef Peter decided to make bigger small batches of his ice cream and sell it wholesale so everyone could enjoy his and Alex’s hand-crafted pints.

Chef Peter knew he wanted the artisan ice cream to have a uniquely Bermuda flavour, thus the black rum series was born.

Chef Peter experimented with many recipes to craft a pineapple sherbet as close to that which many Bermudians remember from childhood. Old Fashioned Pineapple Sherbet is now the signature ingredient in Selena’s famous ginger beer “sherbet shakes”.

Chef Peter also created the exceptionally rich and creamy Southampton Sea Salt Caramel – layered with decadent caramel swirls. Handfuls of his own freshly made bite size brownies go into the Hog Bay Chocolate & Brownie Chunk.

The entrepreneur has an eye on expanding the company in other markets including the US where the company is working with an up-and-coming artisan ice cream maker on potentially exciting projects.

    • Raymond Ray says:

Cute but no, I don’t believe they will be carding anyone since it’s “flavored” only :-(
On another note, good luck Chef Peter Jovetic, this is a new way of advertising our Bermuda…

      • sage says:

Yeah “flavored” with Outerbridges Original Rum Swizzle Mix and Black Seal Rum, and the hypocrites will give it to their kids without a second thought, but ganja tea ? Oh no thats evil!

  2. We Are Not Amused! says:

will they limit to only 3 per customer?

  3. Paulo Correia says:

Some let me know if they have replicated Simmon’s pineapple sherbet flavour… such indelible memories of that heavenly taste!

    • Lois Frederick says:

It is as close as you are going to get. I bought some today.

    • foldgers says:

The closest… veryvery close to simmons sherbert I have gotten , is from a house up in dockyard near bridge. It has a variety of flavors. When I tasted it i almost cried. It was the same texture of simmons and absolutely delicious. They need to sell this island wide. Not saying exactly where because dont want to mess up my stash!! lol

  4. Frank says:

How much are they selling for?

  5. just wondering says:

    Dey tastis vell!! um cirrus

  6. Whistling Frog says:

Is it like the old Simmon Old Fashioned Pineapple Sherbet? I miss that and the strawberry and lime sherbets.

  7. Mike says:

Will air be whipped into it and charged $8/pint?

  8. MB says:

    Yes it’s like Simmons’s.
    Selling for $7 to $8 a pint

  9. EJ says:

No Mike, for that price I am told you get all natural ice cream … and no air. Friendlies, Blue Bunney and co you are right are a lot of air and added sugar, that’s why they cost less.

    • scooper says:

Sorry to disappoint. But ALL ice cream has air in it.
Nevertheless, I’ll be curious to try it & see how it stacks up.
