Serjeant’s Cup for Marine Art Award Winners

November 20, 2014

Two years ago, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of St. Peter’s Church, Mr. David Baldwin, Serjeant of Chapels Royal for HM Queen Elizabeth ll, brought to Bermuda a silver cup inscribed with the words, “The Serjeant’s Cup for Marine Art.”

It was a personal gift from Mr. Baldwin to the church and was intended to serve as the top award for a local marine art show. Masterworks offered to host the exhibition, sponsored by The Friends of St. Peter’s Church, and local artists were informed; by September 29, over 80 entries had been received, with the show opening to the public on October 10.

The awards reception, originally due to take place on October 17, was cancelled following delays caused by Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gonzalo, and an informal gathering took place on October 15.

Utilizing support given by the St. George’s business community, the gathering featured a total of 21 awards in addition to the Cup itself.

The award judges included Tom Butterfield, Stephen Card, and Laura Gorham. Awards were presented by Rev W. David Raths of St. Peter’s Church.
