“Next year will be an exciting one for all of us at the hotel,” said Jeanette Matthew, director of human resources at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess. “

“With phase two renovations underway that will boost the hotel’s profile, the introduction of a new celebrity chef restaurant and with Bermuda’s successful bid to host the 35th America’s Cup in 2017, there is no better time to consider joining the team at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

“Our employees are proud of the lifelong careers they establish here and of the many opportunities for continued professional growth. The careers fair will allow any interested person to learn more about a career at the hotel directly from those who work here.

“While we are particularly interested in speaking with students interested in exploring their career options, we encourage anyone to attend,” added Ms. Matthew.

Throughout the day, there will the opportunity to meet leaders from different departments and to initiate the application process.

For more information about the careers fair, please see here on Facebook and to start the application process, visit fairmontcareers.com.

  1. Umm.... says:

This is good news indeed! There are a lot of families that are hurting. I hope the successful applicants have long and rewarding careers with Fairmont. Thank you, again, to the Green family who continues to invest in Bermuda.

    • Kunta says:

Will de wages be in line with de cost of living, if not foreign cheap labor.

      • X man says:

Kunta does have a point here – he is asking a very simple question’ -
simply because you can’t live off chicken feed here’
I ‘ll rather have him bring this up then Opposition or the BIU
We can only hope that the outcome is good and get all of Bermuda working again.

  2. watching says:

Do prospective employees have to do the computer personality test before making it to the next phase?

  3. Cow Polly says:

The train has left the station………… yippee :-)

  4. GTA says:

Will there be a BIU parade in celebration?

  5. Bermuda Jake says:

I think the computer test was a Fairmont contribution. The present manager is old school and from what I hear, simply looking for people who are passionate about hospitality. Many Bermudians fit the bill perfectly. Hosting a job fair is what positive contribution is all about.

    Well done!

  6. blindbutcansee says:

Will the OBA add these to the jobs they were supposed to create. Im just asking?

    • theothersidebda says:

Are you suggesting that they didn’t create the positive business environment and increase the future liklihood of prsoperity with the America’s Cup??? Because it’s exactly those reasons that the Greens are willing to invest in Bermuda…and hire people as a result. So yes, these jobs are created by the OBA…that’s what governments do…create the environment to allow things to happen. They don’t create “jobs”, they make job creation possible.

    • jt says:

      Do you think they should?

    • Sandgrownan says:

Not sure what the question or oblique point is here. Political parties in government create or build the business environment. It can be argued that this good news is partly due to the environment government have nurtured.

So, does the 150 count towards the 2000? Arguably it does.

    • David Henry says:

No, you’re not just asking. You’re not even getting your punctuation correct. You’re just being a facetious PLP surrogate, and hating on good news cause that’s kind of like oxygen to you.

    • JB says:

Well… Yes. As the jobs were created by the OBA who put together a team which won the bid for the AC.

    • scoob says:

You know that when the OBA said they would create 2000 jobs, they didn’t mean they would create 2000 government jobs.

We have to many people working for government as it is.

The government creates the environment for companies t prosper and employ more people.

Of course these count towards the target.

    • serengeti says:

These jobs are being created during the OBA’s term. They count towards the 2,000. We all know how you hate to see it, but Bermudians thrown out of work under the PLP are going to start to do better.

    • Terry says:

      What a stupid question.

Look at all the jobs lost under the PLP.
OBA has been in office for 2 years and there is much growth in many areas.
      If they do; they do.
Can’t create jobs without growth and guess what dude……..
      WERE GROWING.
      Shalom.

    • blindbutcansee says:

Wow i feel all mushy inside. I’m a facetious, oblique, unpunctuated PLP supporter. 1. Who cares about punctuation. 2. This was an open ended question meant to cause this fury. 3. I AM NOT A PLP SUPPORTER. I could care less about the political parties. If it was up to me i would put ALL politicians; OBA, PLP, UBP, NLP, GOMBEY with all lawyers and all the gang members and affiliates on the Nobe Coriathian tow them 180 miles to the north northwest and see where they end up.
I ask questions like this just to see where people stand. Devils advocate…Why can’t the Greens get the credit for this. Didn’t they buy the Hamilton Princess when PLP was in power? Obviously they saw potential then and had plans then and were already to move forward then. So i guess any body who opens a business and hires people has to thank the OBA for the `environment`they created. I’m just asking? :)

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

Oh dear, another bad news day for the PLP.

  8. watching you says:

OBA will still be a one hit wonder govt. 150 jobs how many work permits?

    • jt says:

What’s the right number for you? 10%…30%…50%…as many as are required to properly fill the positions? Or zero…

    • serengeti says:

Another stupid question. You hate to see Bermudians getting jobs don’t you. You’d rather Bermudians stay unemployed than to admit the OBA is getting the economy moving.
      You’re anti-Bermudian.

    • Sailor says:

Better to be a one hit wonder that a three term disaster. But I do note that you think they are a wonder and I accept that compliment on their behalf.

  9. Oh,I see now says:

You all and your politics ,when that single mother or father out of work for months cashes that first check they will not care what party helped them.

In my opinion both party’s are there to do the same thing.

  10. Tisk says:

It must be so demoralizing for the PLP for the evil OBA to be doing such a good job and putting so many Bermudians to work.

    • X man says:

      - and thats what they voted in to do – the promise was to get the Economy working again and get the People
back to work. — but there are those who feel that the economic surge is due to the economic growth in the
U.S.- the PLP failed to understand and realise this.- lets all realise a strong US.economy means a strong Global
economy.—it definitely has an effect on Bermuda.

  11. Raymond Ray says:

    A Thought For Today:
“Seven blunders of the world that lead to violence: wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, politics without principle.” -Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)

  12. tom cooke says:

It’s not the government’s job to create jobs, that’s why we have such a bloated civil service. It’s the government’s job be it OBA or PLP to make an environment in which local and overseas bissness will invest here. And belive you me we have an awful lot of compition for there dollars. So the greens are to be congratulated for adding the extra jobs in the construction phase and now in the hotel service.

  13. NT says:

That’s interesting because just recently I applied for a job there and was declined almost immediatedly. No exaggeration. I was qualified for the job. It was not a high end position that needed a ton of experience or education. Just a second job I wanted to make more money. In fact they are still advertising the position, so do they truly want to fill these positions with Bermudians? Why not at least just invite people to come in and interview them before you deny them? I guess this is good promo for Fairmont though.

    • Grow up People says:

Maybe you could try contacting them and ask them to give you an honest answer as to why. Until you know why, you can’t address the problem, if in fact there is one.

      • Seriously says:

The same has happened to me on more than one occasion after applying for positions for which I meet all the requirements in a sector which I possess certifications and experience in. Attempt to contact their HR on three separate occasions and have yet to receive a returned call 4 weeks later.

        • haha says:

That’s your problem right there. Take advantage of it and call them back, don’t wait for something to be given to you or expect a phone call back lmao!

        • hmmm says:

Perhaps a Bermudian got the job already. Perhaps your application was not shortlisted, perhaps your application was received late.

          • Seriously says:

It was submitted on time with all relevant documentation and references. I’m still awaiting an explanation from their HR despite pressing via telephone on numerous occasions.

      • NT says:

Is that normal to do when applying for jobs? To call and ask why you were not hired? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that. Anyway I am just going to attend the job fair and try my luck again. I am hard working and responsible. We always have to hear about people who are lazy and call in sick all the time then people like me who are the opposite are left out in the cold. How are those types getting through? You never know what a person is like unil you see them and speak with them. Give young Bermudians a chance.

        • Sickofantz says:

Its normal for people who are serious about looking for a job and ask very politely if HR can give them some pointers about why they didn’t get the job this time that will help them improve for the next job they apply for.

          • hmmm says:

Ask them what they feel you need to work on, improve upon or focus for your development.

          • NT says:

Have you done that and has it worked? I don’t know anyone who calls and demands to know why, that might turn them off even more but thanks for your advice anyway.

            • Moojun says:

NT, you are asking the right questions, and so you will eventually succeed. But; yes, it works. The trick is not to call and “demand”, the trick is to call and honestly enquire as to why, politely.

            • Hefalump says:

I wouldn’t “demand” an answer, but I have previously contacted the HR department of a firm that didn’t hire me after getting through to the last stage of the interview process to ask what I could improve on, and their answer was extremely helpful. The next job I interviewed for, I remembered their advice and got the position (albeit a temporary contract, but better than I had). If I hadn’t called them, I would have continued making the same mistake and probably not got the next job. It also shows them that you were serious and if you do it diplomatically, the next time a position comes up, it may give you a boost.

    • lucky 7 says:

Just throwing this out there…..maybe they didn’t hire you because it would be a 2ND job for you, ( you already have some money coming in) and there are others who have nothing right now? Maybe they want to help those ppl first?

      • NT says:

        They don’t know that.

        • hmmm says:

Perhaps your failure to disclose that you were working didn’t help you. Being disingenious or deceitful from the outset when you are looking for work, does not do you any favours.

          • NT says:

That makes no sense. I was not deceitful. Stop making assumptions.

            • Edmund Spenser says:

And there in lies the problem. Doesn’t give full work history in the application “They don’t know that” referring to current employment and trying to get 2nd job. But that is not deceitful.

    • serengeti says:

Well they perhaps didn’t “just recently” have any vacancies. This announcement came out today. Why don’t you attend the job fair? Or would you rather sit around and complain?

      • NT says:

I am going to attend the job fair. I need all the money I can get to save up and go back to school to better my life. Why don’t you stop making assumptions?

    • Cafe Au Lait says:

If this was a second job for you, perhaps you couldn’t do the amount of hours they wanted. Be honest instead of moaning about this this.

Or were you the kind of Bermudian who said, “Umum, I can’t work May 24th or Cop Metch or nightimes”?

Those days are over, and Bermudians have to compete – otherwise work permits will be issued.

Please tell us what you are not divulging about your application. Automatic Bermudian entitlement is a thing of the past. Live with it or go unemployed.

  14. Great News says:

I will be going on line trying my luck, I will also inform immigration of what job I am applying for with my qualifications that way if by chance I am over looked they can look into.

  15. somuchless says:

If they eliminate the online so called test and hire based on qualifications I see many joining. If they hire based on the current online test good luck cause they will only select a handful. How do I know? I am several others have applied several times and never make it to the next level and it is because of the assesment test.

    • serengeti says:

Why eliminate the test? Too difficult for you? Too many trick questions?

      • somuchless says:

It’s blocking qualified people from getting a job. Its a dumb test and speaking to the HR staff to get answers is useless.

I feel bad for everyone who has tried.

      • Toodle-oo says:

A bit of maybe boring history here . Back in the late 70′s I worked for a company that incorporated these ‘character evaluation tests’ into their hiring / qualification exams.

We didn’t realize it at the time but we were being hand selected . It was at that point one of the largest and most prestigious companies in the world with hundreds of applicants knocking on the door daily. You could be Einstein but if you failed the secret character evaluation test you would not be hired .

Our 8 major competitors worked along side us at the same location but our company was regarded as having the most together and cohesive people .

So I can understand why so many people today don’t get what this is all about . Many people back then didn’t get it either.

  16. N/A says:

Great news, hopefully they are all Bermudians..

  17. Let's get serious says:

150 jobs could be filled today if they were serious about hiring people. With thousands registered at the Job Board and many more they have ‘on file’ there’s really no need for a photo op…….opps… I mean job fair.

    • lucky 7 says:

They still need to be qualified in that field though! They’re not going to hire masons yo pour tea!

      • lucky 7 says:

        *to

      • Stunned... says:

@ lucky – why not hire masons to pour tea…

        - “Masons do it with a steady hand”

        A little Friday levity. :)

    • Stunned... says:

Agreed 150 could be filled today and 132 wouldn’t be working for one reason or another by the end of the first season…my guess.

  18. So Tired says:

We should put them in government. They’re actually delivering on the jobs!!!

  19. Hurricane says:

Fairmont Hamilton WILL NOT be hiring any 150 employees. Bull!

    • SMH says:

They won’t??? They just publically announced this as part of some conspiracy? SMH

      • Hurricane says:

Conspiracy, ok, call it what you will but as an insider, I know about that which I speak.

    • Creamy says:

Ok, well stay sitting on that wall. 150 other people will get the jobs. Your loss.

      • Hurricane says:

Sitting on the wall? I sit in a hotel office and I do know that the hotel has no intention of taking on 150 new staff members. It makes for a good headline for them though

        • Creamy says:

Oh, what’s the number then? Since you seem to “know”. What is the exact number?

        • Dude says:

you better hope they don’t read your posts or you might be looking for another job!

          • Stunned... says:

@ dude – would that be for utilizing company time to post on online news site or publishing something unfavourable or both???

    • Kangoocar says:

Hurricane, with that attitude they sure as heck would not hire you!!! And in my opinion, that would be a WISE decision!!! You are just following the plp way aren’t you?? Plp party and power first, all else, comes a distant last!!! Why don’t you take your case of sour grapes somewhere else??? Your type of thinking lost all relevance when the majority of Bermudians woke up and ousted your plp on the 17th of Dec, 2012!!! GET OVER IT!!! The OBA is creating the environment that your plp destroyed, that is now encouraging employment to all those that your plp made HUNGRY!!!!,

      • Hurricane says:

@ Kangoocar, just so that you are aware, I am neither a supporter of or follower of either of the local parties.
As it relates to the headline that Fairmont will hire 150 employees, it will not happen and, again, I know about that which I speak.

        • Better for all says:

What type of questions are ont the test? Can you give us an example?i

  20. D says:

I have been to the other jobs fairs and I have applied online all I get is get rejection emails or post mail I’ve been unemployed for almost 2 years I can’t even support myself and my kid I have to rely on others and I am seeking employment I am not lazy

  21. Thanks, but says:

At the last career fair during December 2013 at Fairmont, they told everyone they had NO available jobs!!! I hope they actually follow through and hire people this time around!!!

  22. Vanessa says:

My friend just got her permit passed so I don’t think her position will be taken by a bermudian

  23. Raymond Ray says:

From the employers perspective, don’t you think they should have the right to choose who it is that they feel fits the required position/s? Unfortunately,(not all) there are numerous locals that feel within themselves that they must be hired :-( sorry, but life is not that way.
Yes we do have qualified locals that should be hired and if not then they need to take their concerns to Govt. or whomever to straighten the matter out. It’s true, we see many foreigners island wide doing jobs in kitchens, dinning rooms and bars and out along the poolside, and them jobs can be done by locals. Often enough the problems are attitudes. The foreigners seem to be far-more courteous and appear to go the extra mile with a smile upon their face. This makes a big difference when catering to the public.

    • Stunned... says:

as it was explained to me by a hiring manager: You teach a person to do a job but you cannot teach them how to smile. A person with less qualifications with a happy helpful disposition would be chosen over a grumpy sour faced Einstein.

  24. X man says:

Wow’ -150 people to be hired! – great News ‘but will it come true !
I called a friend of mine who is employed there and She said the realistic employment number would be be
around -35 -40 people.- She just can’t see were 150 new Workers would fit in.
…… it may not come true but it is good News and good for social morale.- I’ll believe it when I see it.
but– it it comes true it would be good to get a lot of People looking for work and idle young men working.
I have called five people I know who is looking for work already about this. – as much as I sound optimistic about this I am praying
    that it does come true.
Now lets see how the Opposition reacts to this. – hopefully positive!

  25. Cafe Au Lait says:

I can’t quite understand what the issue is here. Not being accepted for a job is quite normal, and is something that happens to absolutely EVERYONE. Don’t assume there is some evil plot against you – cos you are ‘spashul’.

Simply put: If ten people apply for a job, GUESS WHAT, nine won’t get it.

People who were eliminated need to get over it and seek employment elsewhere. Stop assuming that effing world is against you.

Sorry but its time for some tough love here.

Most successful peopele in life failed over and over but tried again and again.

    Be one of those people.
