Hamilton Princess Phase 2 Work Underway

September 2, 2014

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess has revealed that phase two of the hotel’s $90 million renovation project will begin today [Sept 2].

The second phase of renovations to the historic property will include the creation of a new signature restaurant under the direction of celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson, major renovation of the Gazebo wing guestrooms, remodeling of the central courtyard and a facelift to The Heritage Court.

A spokesperson said, “The three-year renovation project, which has been designed by Botelho Wood Architects, will enhance the hotel’s positioning with both leisure and business travellers and transform the hotel into one of the most exciting, luxury destinations on the island.

“The Gazebo Room will become the location of the signature restaurant of celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson and will be one of the largest in Bermuda, boasting 3,000 square feet inside and a 1,500 square foot wrap-around veranda overlooking the hotel’s marina. The restaurant will have seating for 180, including 30 seats at the bar and a private dining area.”

“A lowered veranda will allow guests dining inside to have uninterrupted harbour views. A central bar will add to the fun atmosphere of the restaurant and a brand new state-of-the-art kitchen designed by the Marcus Samuelsson Group will have an open plan style, complete with an open wood fire barbecue pit in the kitchen, the only one of its kind in Bermuda.

“The restaurant’s interior is expected to be similar to the Samuelsson at HP pop-up with fun, unique to Bermuda décor. The Green family’s personal art will also be on display in the restaurant. Its high ceilings and open-air layout continues the modern design of the overall project.

“Also included in the renovations are 88 guestrooms in the Gazebo wing. Most of the rooms will have King beds, although there will be some double-bed rooms available. The floor-to-ceiling renovations include new furniture and fixtures, wireless internet, audio/visual features and more.”

“Cream hues will create a soft, warm look to contrast the dark wood finishes with coral and blue accents throughout. Luxurious bathrooms will be designed with crema marfil tile and include walk-in rainfall showers. Furnishings include office desks, mini bars and walk-in closets to complete the sleek, modern feel of the new rooms.

“Bermuda Interiors has designed the rooms and Bermudian Dan DeSilva’s artwork will be used in the rooms.

“Another major part of the renovations will be a complete overhaul of the central courtyard. The steps will be removed and the courtyard lowered five feet to enhance the breathtaking views of the harbour and make the area ADA compliant. Outdoor seating for 40 people will be introduced outside The Heritage Court.”

“Pergolas will be added to create an outdoor terrace in the middle of the courtyard while an avenue of palms will line the gardens. Fire pits, seating areas in the expanded gardens will enhance the courtyard.

“An area for entertainment and private functions has been designed to overlook Hamilton Harbour. Once completed, guests will be able to walk to 1609 along the Princess Marina.

“The Heritage Court will be remodeled as part of the renovations with a full kitchen overhaul and a facelift of the bar, which will include white marble and wood paneling. It will close on September 1 and reopen in early 2015.”

Minister of Tourism & Transport Shawn Crockwell said, “The significant upgrades to The Fairmont Hamilton Princess will create an impressive option for business and leisure travellers alike and a premier destination in Bermuda.

“The addition of a signature restaurant by celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson should appeal to foodie travellers and encourage tourists to view Bermuda as a food destination. On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, we thank the Green family for their continued investment in the island.”

“We are thrilled to begin the second phase of renovations at the hotel”, said Allan Federer, General Manager of The Hamilton Princess. “The first phase went extremely well, and we were happy to see guests and locals enjoying the upgrades to the property this summer. The second phase will bring about sensational changes, which will not only add value to the hotel, but will also add to Bermuda’s product as a whole.”

“Harley’s Restaurant will stay open through the renovations and begin serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner on September 1. Instead of closing for the winter season, 1609 Bar & Restaurant will remain open, closing only in the event of inclement weather. The Samuelsson at HP space will become a fun, eclectic-styled bar, Intermission, and will open on September 1.

“Meeting space will be unavailable during the renovations but will reopen next year. The hotel will be open as normal during the course of the renovations, which are expected to be completed by summer 2015.

“Phase three of the renovations will take place in winter 2015 and will include the spa, gym, lobby, a retail corridor and upgrades to the lap pool.”

Love it you guys ! We need more investment in Bermuda like this. I for one, am very thankful that the Greens are taking a big bet on the future of Bermuda. Nothing builds investor confidence like other investors, investing.
