January 12, 2015

[Updated:]

In Magistrates Court this morning [Jan 12], Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo authorized a warrant for the arrest of lawyer Kamal Worrell who had failed to appear in Court as required for a Mention hearing this morning.

Along with Devon Hewey and Dujon Reid-Anderson, the lawyer is charged with offences relating to allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice in a case involving an attempted murder on Reid Street East in 2013.

All three were required to appear this morning in order to elect the next stage in the legal process.

Hewey, held on remand was present. Reid-Anderson, free on bail was present. Mr Worrell, also free on bail, was not present.

The lawyer’s absence generated a bench warrant for his arrest.

Update 4.50pm: The police confirmed that Mr Worrell has been arrested, saying: “Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo issued an arrest warrant for 34 year old Kamal Worrell after he failed to appear in Magistrates’ Court this morning as required. The defendant was subsequently located and taken into police custody. A court appearance is anticipated in due course.”

Update December 2015: Mr Worrell, who had maintained his innocence, has been acquitted of all charges.
