Call For Submissions For Charman Prize 2015

February 2, 2015

Masterworks has announced an open call for submissions for the seventh Charman Prize. Established in 2008 with the opening of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, the Charman Prize awards cash prizes totaling $21,000.

The Prize is open to all artists who have been residents of Bermuda for at least six months and to Bermudian artists who reside overseas. Entry forms are available online or can be picked up at the Masterworks Museum in the Botanical Gardens.

A spokesperson said, “The patron and sponsor of the Charman Prize is local businessman and art collector, Mr. John Charman, whose intention is to provide “an exhibition that can draw from all our senses and provide visual interpretations of our island, its culture and its people.”

“Thanks to Mr. Charman’s generosity, the Charman Prize provides an opportunity to display the extraordinary range of artistic talent that exists in Bermuda and awards cash prizes in recognition of excellence.

“In a departure from previous years, there will be no theme for the 2015 competition. This is to accommodate a full range of artistic liberties, however it should be noted that it is the mission of Masterworks Museum to exhibit Bermuda-inspired artwork and this will be considered in the judging process for the final awards.

“The prizes will be awarded to the artworks that embody the most outstanding examples of the judging criteria, which are stated on the entry form.

“Due to increasing popularity, an internal judging committee will vet the entries for exhibition and a panel of three overseas art professionals will jury the final competition.

“The Charman Prize awards have been restructured for the 2015 competition. As in previous years, the grand prizewinner of the Charman Prize will be awarded $10,000; however for 2015, a new prize of $5,000 has been established to recognise the artistic talents of a non-professional artist who shows exceptional promise or ambition.

“In addition, Judges’ Prizes have been introduced this year and each judge will award a $2,000 prize to an artist whose work they find particularly strong.

“The monetary rewards are incentive for excellent work and affirmation of the artist’s talents and we hope the 2015 Charman Prize will be the strongest presentation to date.

This competition is a fantastic opportunity for artists of all levels to participate in a museum exhibition and be acknowledged for their achievements.

“The deadline for entry is 5.00pm on Thursday, June 25, 2015. For additional information please contact Kate Ross at 299-4000 or artmworks@logic.bm.”
