Tank Punctured, Results In Small Diesel Oil Spill

A small diesel oil spill occurred on Tuesday [Feb 24] when a crane fuel tank was accidentally punctured in the vicinity of Bethell’s Island, the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre [BMOC] said.

A BMOC spokesperson said, “A diligent member of the public contacts BMOC to report an oil slick in Ely’s Harbour. The gentleman also reports the presence of a construction barge and associated tug boat in the vicinity of Bethell’s Island.

A BMOC spokesperson said, “A diligent member of the public contacts BMOC to report an oil slick in Ely’s Harbour. The gentleman also reports the presence of a construction barge and associated tug boat in the vicinity of Bethell’s Island.

“BMOC makes contact with the operators of the construction barge whom advise they will investigate and revert. Following an investigation by the on site manager of the construction operations at Bethell’s Island, the manager advises BMOC that indeed a small diesel oil spill had occurred when the crew accidentally punctured a crane fuel tank.

“BMOC highlights the need to report and contain such incidents in an effort to protect the Marine Environment.”
